Ahead of my first major solo expedition – ten weeks alone in pursuit of becoming the youngest person in history to ski solo to the North Pole – my expedition manager and I worked with a psychologist to devise a monitoring system through which I could communicate my emotions more accurately and honestly.After a winter of unprecedented social isolation, where both the need to share and the barriers to doing so have never been greater, a number of people got in touch – after reading my Lessons of Lockdown article – to find out more about this ‘emotions grid.’ In November 2021, along with my co-host Bruno Giussani (TED’s Global Curator) I’m leading an extraordinary group on a voyage to Antarctica aboard the Ocean Eclipse, a Polar Class 6 ice-strengthened ship that is one of the most environmentally friendly vessels ever to visit the Southern Ocean..There are a handful of places left if you’re interested in joining us. The expedition this past year – into a world of social and physical isolation – has been unlike any that I've undertaken before. However, the two decades I have spent dragging heavy things around cold places have – fortuitously yet unsurprisingly – afforded me some hard-won lessons which feel apt for 2021.Here I've picked out five lessons of lockdown – learnt on the ice – which I feel could help business leaders and their people in the months ahead, and the world that follows.
