ASISTA is a network of attorneys and advocates across the nation working at the intersection of immigration and gender-based violence.Through policy change and legal support, we are challenging the oppressive systems that endanger survivors. ASISTA pushes for federal policies that ensure safety and justice for immigrant survivors. ASISTA coordinates lawsuits to prevent the government from unfairly deporting survivors of violence. ASISTA provides expert case consultation, trainings and resources to attorneys and advocates navigating the complex immigration system. We serve strong immigrants who are rising from the shadows of violence and abuse. They push past obstacles such as threats from abusers, language barriers, misapplied laws, separation from children, trauma, and complex immigration systems to live a life with dignity and self-determination. Though every story is unique, each person has a right to protection under existing U.S. laws. Tatiana, from Jamaica, suffered severe domestic violence. Her son Leo was 5 years old when her long journey to immigration status began. ASISTA successfully aided in the push for Leo's immigration status, and the mother and son were reunited after 7 years. Eva fled violence in El Salvador seeking safety in the U.S., but she was detained by ICE. She faced deportation—and 6 years apart from her child. When ASISTA intervened in her case, she was pulled from her removal flight, and allowed to stay and work here legally. She refers to her release as "un milagro”—a miracle. Claudia, from Colombia, was subjected to extreme domestic violence at the hands of her abusive U.S. citizen husband. Because of ASISTA's direct advocacy with the government, she was able to obtain her work authorization so that she could safely rebuild her life without relying on her abuser.
