An international satellite mission launched by NASA and JAXA on Feb. 27, 2014, that is setting new standards for precipitation measurements worldwide using a network of satellites united by the GPM Core Observatory. Get data Personalizing Precipitation Data Meet Andrea Portier.By day, Portier is an application and outreach coordinator for the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission (GPM). By night — well, when she’s not at work — Portier can be found exploring local national parks and taking community classes.Portier spends her time honing her communication skills to help user communities understand GPM data and apply it to the real-world issues they face.We chatted with Portier to... Revisiting Hurricane Dorian As we prepare for the start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season on June 1st, take a look at 2019’s Hurricane Dorian and how NASA and partner satellites tracked the storm and its impacts to aid response and recovery efforts in the Bahamas. Studying past hurricanes like Dorian can help us better prepare for the hurricanes of the future. GPM Sees Cyclone Amphan Approach India On May 16, 2020, NASA / JAXA's GPM Core Observatory satellite observed the early stages of Tropical Cyclone Amphan as it tracked north over the Bay of Bengal. The below GPM overpass shows precipitation within Cyclone Amphan a day before it explosively intensified into a category 4-equivalent cyclone. Even at this early stage, Amphan produced heavy rain rates near its center and to its west and southwest. Typhoon Vongfong Hits the Philippines he first typhoon of the season, Vongfong, struck the central Philippines this past week (where it is known as Ambo) as a strong category 2 storm, bringing strong winds and locally heavy rainfall. Vongfong formed into a tropical depression in the southern Philippine Sea west of Palau on Sunday May 10th from a disturbance that had been slowly making its way westward over the past several days. After becoming a depression, the system moved... Celebrating Earth Day with GPM On April 22, 2020, people around the world celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, embracing our commitment towards understanding the planet’s environmental processes and protecting it for future generations.NASA’s GPM mission is providing multiple resources to demonstrate how GPM precipitation data-based products support efforts to help sustain and improve Earth’s environment and have a positive effect globally for people throughout... Displays of realtime data on this site may be intermittent today due to server maintenance.GPM DataPrecipitation data from the GPM and TRMM missions is made available free to the public in a variety of formats from several sources. This section outlines the different types of data available, the levels of processing, the sources to download the data, and some helpful tips for utilizing precipitation data in your research.TrainingLearn how to access and analyze global precipitation data in this series of training sessions. Register for upcoming training sessionsand download videos and slides from past training sessions. Topics include: Overview of GPM data and tools, GPM data search and analysis, data import and analysisinGIS, using Python with GPM data, and more.MultimediaPhotos and videos that tell the story of the Precipitation Measurement Missions. Watch the GPM Core Observatory being built and tested at NASA Goddard, learn about the science of measuring precipitation, and more.ScienceThrough an advanced set of instruments, TRMM and GPM provide new information on precipitation characteristics and how rain and snow interact within the Earth system. This section explores how space-borne precipitation measurements are acquired, processed, and utilized.

The official website for NASA Precipitation Measurement Missions. These missions study rainfall and other types precipitation around the globe. The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission provides a new generation of satellite observations of rain and snow worldwide every three hours for scientific research and societal benefits. The GPM Core Observatory launched on February 27th, 2014 from Tanegashima, Japan. The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite, launched in 1997, contained a suite of advanced instruments designed to study the structure and distribution of tropical rainfall.
