This post is a little late because I kept trying to make the nail art perfect.. but Im not particularly good at drawing so it didnt quite work.

Here is the best I could do:

Pocket Full of Sunshine Nail Art

Pocket Full of Sunshine Nail Art Design

Inspired by:

(Natasha Bedingfield  Pocketful Of Sunshine )

I used three colours, blue yellow and white.

Yellow, Blue and White Nail Polish

I painted my thumbnails blue with yellow tips, and the rest of my nails alternating blue and yellow.

Base Colours

I used the white as a base underneath the yellow. Im not sure if its very clear in this picture but the index finger nail is without a white base and the ring finger is with.

No Base vs White Base

I used a black nail art pen to draw stitching and sun rays on the thumbnails to make it look like a pocket full of sunshine. I practiced on a blank nail first.

Practice Nail

Then I drew the design onto the base colours.

Pocket Full of Sunshine Nail

It took me a while to get these close-to-sort-of-almost-right. Partially due to my tendency to be a little impatient. There were a few attempts that didnt work at all because I didnt leave them to dry enough before drawing on them. You can see in this close up that even with these close-to-sort-of-almost-right ones that the base wasnt quite dry.

Pocket Full of Sunshine Close Up

Next time I draw something Ill try and be a bit more patient, and a bit less critical.

My schedule and routine are all out of whack at the moment. When I say out of whack I really mean non-existent. By non-existent I really mean I am not working or studying over the summer so I could literally sleep for weeks if I wanted. I wasnt sure I was going to get my week 1 nails done today, but I did!

I used some black and white nail foils.

Black and White nail foils

These nails are like stickers that are stuck on and then set with a hair dryer. I thought that was a really cool idea, until I was in the bathroom of a house with no air conditioning, blasting my nails with a hair dryer. Im sure it would have been better if it wasnt a hot summer day. I only managed to get 3 nails done.

New year, new nails, and new 52 week nail artchallenge!

Actually its the same challenge. I havent started it yet. Since my last post Ive had to deal with: 5 severe storms, 4 assignment dooms, 3 minor floods, 2 Xmas feasts, and a migraine with an IV.
(NB: numbers adjusted to fit the tune of the 12 days of Xmas. There were probably more storms)

Here is some video I took of the lightening from one of the storms.

This have calmed down a bit now and Im ready to start the 52 week nail art challenge. Ive adjusted my list so week 1 is now the 2nd of January. Ive also swapped the seasons around to suit this hemisphere.

I have been a bit stuck for inspiration recently and I was toying with the idea of doing the 31 day nail art challenge but I know I wont be able to find the time to paint new nail art designs every day. While blog surfing today I came across this genius idea by GretalRabbit: The 52 Week Nail Art Challenge. One design per week for 52 weeks. I think I can manage that!

One of the great things about this challenge is that the weeks are dated as well as numbered so you can start any time and just move the week numbers to fit the date youre starting. I plan on starting this at the end of November.

Throughout history, fingernails have been coloured using various concoctions, such as egg whites and bees wax in Ancient China or henna in Ancient Egypt. The more modern trend of Nail Art takes decorating fingernails to a new level. Nail Art is literally art for nails. It can be done by painting, drawing, sculpting, airbrushing or otherwise adding designs and decorations on to fingernails.

Nail Art comes in many different forms:
So far I have only tried polish strips, water marbling and drawing with a tooth pick but there are a lot of other forms of nail art I’d love to try. Fimo nail art involves taking slices of fimo clay canes and sticking them to your nails to make a design. Another way to create a more 3D design is by using acrylic or gel sculpture. Sometimes these designs can be a little out there even for me. The most out there nail art Ive seen so far is aquarium nails. These nails have actual water in them!

D.I.Y. Nail Art is Do-able!
Really! You don’t have to go out and buy yourself an airbrushing kit or be a master miniature sculptor to do your own nail art. Stickers, polish strips and foil transfers are very easy. They involve sticking or transferring things on to your nails. These lace-looking polish strips took me 20 minutes to apply.

If you’re feeling creative and a little bit brave, start with easy designs like Coloured French Tips, or drawing/painting with nail polish. You don’t need to spend all of your money on Nail Polish Pens or special brushes. This Leopard Print design was done using cotton tips for the pink dots and a toothpick for the black lines.

The essentials
You will need a few essentials to get started: fingernails to practice on, nail polish in at least two colours and some imagination. Nail polish remover, tooth picks, cotton tips, cotton wool, nail scissors and clear nail polish are useful, but not essential. It’s also nice to have a flat surface to work on. I like to use a desk for particularly messy designs (like water marbling) or a cardboard box on my lap if I’m on the couch drawing with toothpicks.

So what are you waiting for? Grab some polish and start painting.

I Heart NailArt

Welcome! If you have read about me you will know that I heart colour and design, although this is not reflected in my wardrobe. I generally wear all black because it’s easy, everything matches, and because it’s who I am. Nail Art is one of the ways I express my creativity, quirkiness and love of colour.

From acrylic tips to airbrushed designs I have always loved getting my nails done in fun and funky new ways. Nail art suits my capricious nature because it’s a lot cheaper than changing my wardrobe every time I change my mind. As a student I’ve found I can’t even afford to go and get my nails done professionally every few weeks. D.I.Y. Nail Art opens up a new world of possibilities. As well as being affordable, I’ve also found more fun to express my creativity with my own two hands.

When I first started playing around with D.I.Y. Nail Art I was worried that I didn’t have the skills, talent, equipment or training to produce anything more than French Tips in a variety of colours but after a little research and some practice I’m starting to get the hang of it.

Some of my favourites so far are:

Water Marbling

and..

Leopard Print

One of the things I heart most about Nail Art is the endless possibilities. The world of Nail Art trends, design ideas and techniques is ever changing, just like me! So, armed with my collection of cheap nail polish and some nail art tools, I am hoping to conquer the world of D.I.Y. nail art.
