This issue of "Exchange" showcases ways in which the people of the College are improving the world. We are addressing the COVID-19 pandemic in several ways, with research beginning to show promise on the sciences front, and also among humanities scholars and social scientists. In this issue of "Exchange," the College magazine, we stop and remember our shared values, and we consider how these touchstone values are helping our community to find the way back from the appalling events of April 30. We include a brief series of stories that highlight the importance that connections have made in the healing process. This issue of the UNC Charlotte College of Liberal Arts Sciences’ magazine Exchange illustrates how people in the College integrate research, teaching and service into the work being done in the broader community, particularly as focused on social mobility. UNC Charlotte alumna Estella Patterson ’96 is the new police chief for the city of Raleigh, N.C., chosen following a competitive national search. Patterson, who graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in political science from UNC Charlotte and was a member of the Army ROTC, has risen through the ranks with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) over the past 24 years. As a student attending rural North Carolina grade schools and a Raleigh high school that is majority white, Candace Silver saw just a few other Black faces in her classes, if any. Lessons and books paid little attention to telling Black people’s stories, she recalls. Now, as the inaugural recipient of the new Gregory Mixon-Sonya Ramsey Black Lives Matter Scholarship, Silver continues to grow her understanding and appreciation for a broader view that includes the contributions and struggles of Black people throughout history. Levine Scholar Andrea Badillo-Pérez will pursue her passion for service as she heads to New York University Grossman School of Medicine with full funding, after receiving acceptances from 10 top-rated medical schools. Badillo-Pérez earned bachelor's degrees in biology and psychology in the College of Liberal Arts Sciences and a minor in public health in the College of Health and Human Services. A dozen UNC Charlotte students, faculty and staff joined other volunteers on Sunday, April 25 to install Barton Creek Greenway Native Meadows, a community native plant project in University City. They worked to install 25 varieties of plants to beautify the area and to provide education to people who want to use native plants. The Personally Speaking published experts series in its 11th season looked at drones, cats, and Africa. Three UNC Charlotte scholars/researchers in 2020-2021 talks discussed books they have written and how they came to write them during the annual series. UNC Charlotte Professor of Spanish Michael Doyle has received the top international award of the Hispanic honor society Sigma Delta Pi, with his induction into the Order of Don Quijote. Each year, the organization chooses no more than three people worldwide for the honor. Doyle’s work has significantly advanced Hispanic scholarship, particularly in translation studies and in shaping the field of business Spanish throughout the U.S. Through one of the most competitive fellowship programs in the world, UNC Charlotte Africana Studies scholar Oscar de la Torre has been named the Anthony E. Kaye Fellow at the National Humanities Center in the coming academic year. De la Torre will join 35 other leading scholars chosen as fellows from 638 applicants from universities and colleges in 16 U.S. states and from Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Nigeria, and Taiwan. The latest U.S. News World Report rankings place the Gerald G. Fox Master of Public Administration at #48 nationally, with the program moving into top 17 percent of all ranked public affairs programs. For UNC Charlotte’s nationally accredited MPA program, its ranking marks a 19% increase over last year’s results. UNC Charlotte researcher Rosario Porras-Aguilar is fascinated by light, inspired by its beauty and its usefulness. Specifically, she focuses her pioneering research on how light can enable more accurate quantitative data in fields ranging from microbiology to high-tech manufacturing. To support her research, Porras-Aguilar this spring received a coveted National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) Award. With demand growing for renewable energy and for novel energy storage options, UNC Charlotte chemist Christopher Bejger is conducting innovative research that holds promise for new solutions. To support his research, Bejger this spring received a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) award. Professor Emeritus David Hartgen passed away on May 22, 2021. From 1989 to 2006, Dr. Hartgen was Professor of Transportation in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at UNC Charlotte. With its portrayal of the difficulties of frontier life, The New York Times Book Review has just named "All God's Children" by novelist and UNC Charlotte English Associate Professor Aaron Gwyn as one of The Best Books To Give This Year. CLAS faculty members are leaders among those throughout UNC Charlotte who persevered during the pandemic to provide their students with global learning, partnering with the Office of International Programs to pilot a new initiative called Globally Networked Learning (GNL). UNC Charlotte’s Master of Science in Mathematical Finance program has once again been named among the top-ranked programs in the nation, ranking No. 12 in the TFE Times’ 2021 Master of Financial Engineering program rankings. As a STEM-designated program of the Departments of Finance and Economics in the Belk College of Business and the Mathematics and Statistics Department in the College of Liberal Arts Sciences, the program excels in readying students for careers in an emerging field.
