Russell L. Shaeffer It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that our Columbus Base shipmate Russell L. "Russ" Shaeffer departed on Eternal Patrol on Sunday August 16, 2020.Russ joined the United States Navy in 1951. He served as a Teleman-Teletypist aboard USS Sperry (AS-12) and USS General William Mitchell (AP-114). He was discharged in 1955. He was proud of his Navy service and proud to be a Sperry alumnus.Russ joined Columbus Base and USSVI as an Associate Member in 2014. Although not a "qualified submariner", he was proud to be a member of Columbus Base... nearly as much as being a Sperry sailor. His overall pride was evident when he purchased and wore a "sub vest" with a Sperry octopus logo emblazoned on the back (see attached picture). Russ was quite active in Columbus Base, attending most of the base monthly meetings from the time he joined until he fell ill. Russ's lovely wife Anna was also a happy addition to many of our dinners and ceremonies.Russ's obituary follows (click read more below). "Chuck"Martindeparted on Eternal Patrol on Monday July 6th.Chuckjoined the United States Navy in 1952. He qualified in 1956 aboard USS PomfretSS-391, and also served aboard USS Nautilus SSN-571, USS Finback SSN-670, and USS Daniel Webster SSBN-626. He retired as ETCM (SS) in 1975Chuck was a Life Member of USSVI,Columbus Base, and Ponce De Leon Base... and a former member of Peoria Base.He was "recruited" toColumbus BasebyPhil Philipps in late 2006... when Phil was recruiting all of his old Peoria Base shipmates to join Columbus. At the time,Chuck lived just across the Ohio River in West Virginia.He later moved to Lake Helen, Florida where he joined the Ponce De Leon Base in Daytona Beach. At the time of his passing, Chuck was the Ponce De Leon Base Commander.Chuck was a member of Holland Club. He wasinducted by Peoria Base in 2006,and was presented with his Columbus Base Holland Club plaque in 2007. Chuck was also a life member of the Nautilus Alumni Association.Charles E. Martin, 85, of Lake Helen, FL, formerly of Huntington, WV, died July 6, 2020 at his home. He was born March 29, 1935 in Huntington, son of the late Harry and Helen Kent Martin. He was a retired Senior Master Chief of the Command from the United States Navy. Master Chief Martin’s memberships include, St. Peters Episcopal Church; the Ceredo Crescent Lodge AF AM #32; the Scottish Rite of Norfolk, VA; the Khedive Temple of Chesapeake, VA; an associate member of El Hasa Temple of Ashland, KY; the BPOE Elks Lodge #313; The Moose Lodge; the American Legion Post 16 of Huntington; a lifetime member of the VFW of Virginia Beach, VA; and a lifetime member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 33 of Fairmont, WV. He is survived by five children and their spouses, Harry C. Martin (Susan) of Casper, WY, Dennese M. Deaton (Douglas) of Chesapeake, OH, Jane C. Gresham of Chesapeake, VA, Russell P. Martin (Debbie) of Dallas,TX, Anita L. Steadman (Brian) of Virginia Beach, VA; one brother, Jerry L. Martin (Barbara) formerly of Proctorville, OH; 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandkids and one due in September. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 18, 2020 by the Rev. Deborah Rankin at Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary with the United States Navy conducting military rites. Brian Farnsworth and Josten Tripphavong were introduced, Brian is a former member who just relocated to the columbus area and this is the first meeting Josten has been able to attend. He qualified in 1971 aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt SSBN-600, and also served aboard the submarine tender USS Sperry AS-12. Jim spent his Naval career as an Electronics Technician, advancing to the rating of ET1(SS) before being discharged in 1976.Jim joined USSVI National and Columbus Base in 2006 and became a Life Member of both in 2013. During his 14 years with Columbus Base, he served 2 terms as Base Commander, and 2 terms as Vice-Commander. He also served as Membership Chairman and Base records keeper. In recognition of their service to Columbus Base, Jim and Karla Tolson were jointly elected Columbus Base Shipmates Of The Year in 2011.In addition to his USSVI memberships, Jim was also a member of American Legion Don Gentile Post #532, AMVETS Post #89, VFW Post #4931, SSBN 598 Class Joint Reunion.More information, including Jim's obituary and memorial, will be shared as soon as available. They are available via the "Photo Gallery" button in the Menu on the left hand side of this page. New member Richard "Dembo" Demboski was welcomed to the Columbusbase of the USSVI. He served in the Navy 1960-1966, finishing up as ETR2(SS). He qualified on USS Sabalo SS-302 in 1961, and also served on USS Halibut SSGN-587. Pendleton I'm sad, and again surprised, to inform you of the passing of our Columbus Base shipmate John Pendleton. Sad, obviously, because we've lost another shipmate... the second such notice this week. I'm surprised, because John passed on 22 June 2015 and (again) we weren't aware!John served 22 years in the Navy, advancing from FN striker to LCdr. He qualified silver in 1954 aboard USS Toro SS-422, and qualified gold in 1968 aboard USS Quillback SS-424. During his Navy career, John served aboard 1 destroyer, 6 submarines, 2 sub tenders, and 2 sub rescue ships... his final station being as commanding officer of USS Tringa ASR-16. John was a Life Member of USSVI and Columbus Base, joining National in 1999 and was brought aboard Columbus Base by Phil Philipps in 2004. He was inducted into the Holland Club in 2005.John, like his Seadragon shipmate Ron Waldron, lived in Florida... so few of us knew, or even ever met him. But by all appearances, he had a stellar, varied, and unique Navy career. Just an example... John's submarine "nickname" was "Two Ways". Why??? Because he had the unique distinction of being one of (if not the only) submariner to cross UNDER the North Pole in both directions... first West to East in 1958 aboard USS Nautilus historic voyage, then East to West in 1960 aboard Seadragon.John joins his USS Seadragon shipmates Phil Philipps, Ron Waldron, and Doc Morin on Eternal Patrol. May they have fair winds, following seas, zero bubble, and a green board throughout their final cruise.John will be remembered and memorialized at the Columbus Base Tolling Ceremonies. Columbus Base will donate $100.00 to the USSVI Scholarship Fund in John's memory.John E. Pendleton, 81, of Lady Lake, Florida, went home on June 22, 2015. Born in Portsmouth, N.H. to Marjorie and Jack Pendleton.John served 22 distinguished years in the U.S. Navy. He is known for being the first man in history to cross under the North Pole in both directions, first aboard the U.S.S. Nautilus's Historic Voyage in 1958 from west to east and then again on the U.S.S. Sea dragon in1960 from east to west. Achieving the rank of Lt Cmdr.; last duty commanding the U.S.S. Tringa.John held electrical supervisory positions after his naval retirement including Fishers Island Utility, Fishers Island, N.Y. He loved volunteering in his community as an emergency responder. John was an avid fan of the Giants, boating and John Wayne. He also loved RV'ing across country with his wife, which was an adventure they enjoyed for 9 years, settling in Lady Lake, FL.John is survived by his wife Angela of 61 years; his four daughters, Patricia Ott and Cheryl Pendleton of Lady Lake, FL; Kathleen Bourey of Willimantic, CT and Nancy Rigores of Houston, TX and his two sons John D. of Clinton, CT and William E. of Boynton Beach, FL; thirteen Grand-children and 7 Great Grand-children. Waldron It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of our Columbus Base shipmate Ron Waldron. Ron qualified in 1953 aboard USS Charr SS-328. He joined USSVI National in 1999 and was brought aboard Columbus Base by Phil Philipps in 2005, and was inducted into the Holland Club in 2005. Ron served on active duty for 23 years, serving on 6 boats and 2 tenders.Sadly most of us never met Ron, since he lived in Florida for the past several years. But he was a staunch supporter of the base. Ron will be remembered and memorialized at the Columbus Base Tolling Ceremonies.Columbus Base will donate $100.00 to the USSVI Scholarship Fund in Ron's memory.Ronald J. Waldron November 28, 1934 – January 11, 2020LCDR Ronald J Waldron, 85, of Panama City Beach, Fl, passed away on 1/11/2020. Ronald served in the U,S, Navy for 23 years. He proudly worked on Nuclear Submarines, to include making history on the USS Seadragon, the 1st submarine to cross under the North Pole on East/West passage. Ron served on many forward technology subs, USS Nautilus, USS Charr, and USS Hardhead. He traveled the world, served his country with honor. He went on to civilian contract work for the Navy after retiring. Ron was an avid golfer, poker player, a character full of life and wit, and all around friend to all he met. He was preceded in death by his life love, Florence Coughlin Waldron. Surviving him are his children; Lynne (Robert) Carlson of Panama City Beach, Fl and Richard (Mary) Waldron of Cumming, Ga. Grandchildren Alexander, Elizabeth, Alan (Kate) Punsky, Andrea (Chris) Peters, Rick (Rose) Waldron. 5 Great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be 4:45 p.m., Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at Southerland Event Center with Navy Honors. Reese It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of our former Columbus Base shipmate Larry Reese. Larry joined USSVI and Columbus Base in March 2013, and stayed with us until the end of 2017 when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and moved to Florida.Larry qualified in 1971 aboard USS George Washington Carver SSBN-656. He left the Navy in 1974 as MM3 (SS).According to his obituary, a memorial service will be held in the future. As soon as we know a date/time/location, we'll pass the word.Larry D. ReeseMay 16, 1951 – September 26, 2019Larry D. Reese, 68, of Lake Placid, Florida went home to be with his Lord on Thursday morning, September 26, 2019 at his residence surrounded by his family after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Larry was born on May 16, 1951 in Columbus, Ohio to parents Marilyn (Blosser) and Ivan Reese. Larry served his country with honors in both the US Navy and the US Army reserve. Larry then served the City of Columbus, Ohio as a police officer, homicide and cold case detective. After retiring, Larry moved to Lake Placid in 2017. Larry was a member of the Heartland Christian Church in Sebring. Larry enjoyed being out on the water in his boat, a good round of golf, camping, traveling, and loved to cook for his family and friends any time they could get together. Larry is survived by his mother; Marilyn Reese, loving wife of 43 years; Marita, daughters; Dyann (Phillips), Maryjo (Ryther), and Stephanie (Burlingame), brothers; Steve and Greg and twelve grandchildren. In keeping with Larry’s wishes a memorial service will be planned in Columbus Ohio at a future date.Larry will be remembered at the Columbus Base Tolling Ceremonies.Fair winds and following seas, shipmate. Sad, because we've lost another shipmate. Surprised, because Sam passed on 23 January 2018 and we weren't aware!Sam served in the Navy from 1955 to 1961, leaving as MM1(SS). He qualified in 1956 aboard USS Trutta SS-421, and also served on USS Skate SSN-578 in 1957 and USS Halibut SSN/SSGN-587 from 1959 to 1961. Sam was a Life Member of both USSVI (joining in 2001) and Columbus Base (joining in 2005), and also a member of Cod Base in Cleveland. Sam was inducted into the Holland Club in 2006.As a civilian, Sam served as a deputy sheriff and private investigator, and was also a pastor with Grace Communion International church.Chaplain Sharon Lloyd learned of Sam's death when she called to see how he was doing. A member of Sam's family advised that he had passed. However, we've not been able to find an obituary, or any records (newspaper, funeral home, etc) of a funeral or memorial service. In fact, it appears that even members of his church were not aware of his passing for nearly a month.Sam will be remembered and memorialized at the Columbus Base Tolling Ceremonies.
