I have explored the visual art of Carlisle over the last few months. To find out some more about my story and discover what I have found, watch the video below!

Top 10 Works of Art: Dickinson CollegesLibrary Art Culture, Dickinson College, Visual ArtsDickinson College, Library Art, Top 10artfortheartlessblog One comment

Dickinson Colleges Waidner-Spahr Library is a wonderful study space and resource. It has books of all shapes and sizes, periodicals, the Biblio Cafe, and great technological resources—however, not many notice its incredible art. Works of art are scattered throughout the librarys three floors. While those of you who are Dickinson students are preparing for finals, you can take a walk and find these ten great works of art; or, if you live in Carlisle, the library has public hours!

The works are selected and ranked by my personal preference, but please comment and tell me what you like the best!

An Interview with an Artist: MeghanAbercrombie Art Culture, Dickinson College, Visual ArtsDickinson College, Meghan Abercrombie, Studio Artartfortheartlessblog One comment

Meghan Abercrombie is a senior Studio Art Major at Dickinson College. She was nice enough to sit down with me Sunday, November 23rd, 2014 to discuss a variety of arts-related topics, everything from her artistic inspirations to the studio art major at Dickinson.

Meghan standing by some of her artwork at the studio art senior show entiled More or Less at the Goodyear Gallery.

James: What is your artistic background? When did you start making art?

Meghan: I started when I was eight. Well, I’ve been doing art since I could write and draw, but I started taking private lessons when I was eight years old at a studio near my house. I took them all through high school and I also took art classes in high school. I took AP studio art which was not a very good experience, but it was fine nonetheless. I’ve been doing it for a long time. Especially the private studio lessons were really helpful. My teacher is now a really close friend. She is always interested in what I want to do, where I’m taking it. So it’s always really nice to go back to her studio and see what’s going on.

I woke up on Saturday morning and decided to stop in at the Dickinson College Goodyear Gallery. Since I live in one of the Goodyear apartments, it was literally right out my back door. Within a minute of leaving my apartment, I was surrounded by the photography of Tom Fischer, a professor of photography at Savannah College of Art and Design. Fischers work has been shown in more than 60 exhibitions in galleries and museums in the U.S., Europe, and Asia—his most recent photography project is featured at the Goodyear Gallery.

Dennis Akins beautiful stained-glass windows that spot the Dickinson campus deserve admiration. Many Dickinson students and Carlisle residents are not aware of the art around them—they have grown accustomed to their surroundings.

Akins stained-glass installations are featured on 7 Dickinson buildings: East College, Bosler, Stern, Weiss, Asbell Center, Montgomery House, and the Kline Athletic Center.

Why Art? Art Culture, Visual ArtsCarlisle, Dickinson College, James George, PA, Why Artartfortheartlessblog View all 2 comments

Andrew Wyeths painting, entitled Christinas World, (shown above) is one of the earliest paintings I can remember appreciating as a piece of art. My sister had a print of it hanging on her bedroom wall and it caught my attention during my middle school years. Its astonishing detail, mysterious subject, and masterful union of idea form were not apparent to me at the time, but it gave me a sense of what great art can accomplish. more
