About Me

"I love being a doula, deep down in my soul."

My name is Emerald Ortiz, I am the owner and operator of Sacred Wombanhood Birth Support Services. I am afull spectrumdoula who iscertified as a Community Outreach Perinatal Educator (COPE) through Commonsense Childbirth Institute which encompasses child birth education, birth doula and lactation support. I am also trained by Shafia Monroe Consulting (SMC), as a culturally competent full circle doula.I have numerous skills and resources to offer my clients including knowledge of pregnancy and postpartum herbs, belly binding, mother blessing, baby wearing, infant care and more.

As the mother of 2 sons and a daughter, I know the importance of both the presence and lack of informedsupport, and resources for new parents. Though I havebeen a "trained" doula since2018, my birthwork journey began in 1997 when supportinga friend through her birth and realized how beautifully sacred supporting a birth can be. I then went on to support numerous family and friends' births before taking doula training. Being a birth worker is not just what I do, but a part of who I am.

Services I provideinclude childbirth education, prenatal support, partner support, pregnancy and birth comfort measures, birth planning, physical/emotional birth support, breastfeeding, infant care, and postpartum support. Also, as a graduate of Woman's Choice Perinatal Service Placenta Encapsulation training I provideplacenta capsule preparation.

Because pregnancies can end in a number of ways I amprepared to support families through any outcome. I amalso a certified Pregnancy and Infant Loss (PAIL) advocate.

I amproudly one of the co-founding members of the Umoja Nia Birth Collective, a Rhode Island based doula collective of unique, diverse Full Spectrum Doulas who provide a range of perinatal service to families across the State.

Placenta Encapsulation Testimonial

I received a recommendation for placental encapsulation from my doula Jesse Rosene De Brito, and I'm glad she sent me to Emerald. Emerald was super professional, answered my texts/inquiries in a timely manner, explained everything via a phone consult and was thorough with her contract. Her actual services were even better. She came to my home and worked quietly and efficiently and cleaned up afterwards. Everything was handled safely and very hygienic. Would recommend her to anyone I know who wants to encapsulate their placenta.  ` Ana Sofia D.

Emerald was wonderful to work with. She gave clear instructions on how to handle the placenta prior to her coming to my home. I worked with Emerald during the pandemic and she had significant precautions in place to keep both herself and my family safe while she was working in my home. I can't recommend her services enough.

Birth Doula Testimonial

"Having Emerald as my doula was such a big help. Giving birth to my first child was such a crazy experience and because of her i was able to remain calm the entire time. Even the times i went into preterm labor she was right beside me and spoke for me when i felt i wasn’t being listened too. She taught me techniques for not  letting fear take over me, and instead to embrace the little bit of pain i would feel in order to have the greatest blessing life has to offer. I’m so thankful to have had her during the most important event in my life."  ~ Nikki R.

"My experience with Emerald was great. She was very informative of what my options were for my birth. She was supportive in my decisions in how I wanted my birth to go. Emerald provided a wealth of resources and information. She was present for my entire birth and actually arrived at the hospital before I did. Upon me arriving to the hospital she never left my side. Emerald followed up with me twice at home after I gave birth. During those visits she helped with dishes and demonstrated how to baby wear and belly bind. I am pleased with her services and would use her again in the future"

On the 29th of may my wife and I were eagerly awaiting the coming of our third child. As most of us know due dates are merely reference points of expectation. Some babies decide to come early, some on time, and some come later than most women would like them to. All things considered, when they do decide to come there is no shortage of anxious energy. Often even with the standard preparatory measures in place we are overwhelmed with scattered excitement. The full day had passed uneventfully and we were officially part of the "late birth category." In Past pregnancies this would have provoked an additional layer of suspense but this time was different. This time we had enlisted the services of a Doula, On the 30th she called us and said she was going to pay us a visit for a routine check in. When she arrived it was the usual "how are we feeling," line of questioning, and several recommendations, after which she left us with a peanut ball for my wife to bounce on. After a few more hours had passed we felt no closer to birth but most certainly ready to begin the show. After some more bouncing, a long walk, and general anticipation the morning passed without incident. Then at about 10:pm those contractions came . We frantically gathered our bags and scrambled to the car. First call we made was to our dula. We arrived at the hospital checked in, and were escorted to the delivery room. No shorter than 30 minutes later she arrived. We were in the throws of periodic contractions and our Doula Emerald Ortiz swooped in with the calm confidence of a seasoned professional. When I couldn't satisfy the needs of my wife Emerald was more than happy to step in and handle coaching and encouragement. Hours had passed and my wife was now in the thick of painful contractions. When i felt as if i couldn't help her Emerald assured me that she could. As the morning passed into the afternoon I lost all track of time. My wife was exhausted and so was I. Emerald sensed my fatigue and suggested I close my eyes for a bit. Although I felt a bit funny about it I seized the opportunity. I'm really not sure how long I slept before Emerald gently woke me with the words "its time." I awoke with a giddy excitement to see my new baby crowning. I was still taken back by the fact that I got some sleep. I was pleasantly refreshed and more than ready to embark on the final stages of the natural birth process. What seemed like a few good pushes and some long minutes later I heard the words "it's a boy." I couldn't have been more satisfied. If we ever decide to have another child there is no possible way we would do it without this spectacular woman by our side. I will be forever grateful, and i would recommend anybody looking to have a child utilize the extraordinary services of Emerald Ortiz.
