It’s almost too easy to imagine technological progress on planet Earth: sleek soft-running electric vehicles that travel along starlit highways, smart sustainable neighborhoods and powerful devices that function for weeks on a single charge. Battery manufacturing suffers from costly quality control errors, and the resulting flaws have ripple effects through the entire life cycle of a battery. Battery management remains an open-loop system, incapable of diagnosing and actively monitoring the needs of each battery-powered system, which results in poor performance and safety hazards. Furthermore, lithium-ion cells are rarely used to their full potential and are often discarded solely based on extraneous factors.
