Completion of the CCI Phase 2 Sea Ice project 31 July 2018

Tue, 2018-08-21 13:40

The CCI Sea Ice project was completed on 31 July 2018, when the last deliverables were finalized and submitted to ESA. A set of climate data records for sea ice concentration and sea ice thickness have been produced and delivered to the CCI Data Portal. Round-Robin data sets, algorithms, and processing systems have been developed and made operational. The work performed by all the project partners has resulted in a number of scientific publications.
All deliverables are available under “Resources->Documents”.

Release of sea ice thickness data set version 2.0

Tue, 2018-08-21 13:38

Version 2.0 of the sea-ice thickness dataset was released on 20 June 2018 by AWI. This dataset includes observations, made by the two radar altimeter missions, Envisat and CryoSat-2, for both Arctic and Antarctic from October 2002 to April 2017. This dataset, in comparison to the previous dataset (v1.0), provides a number of improvements which include improved sea-ice thickness retrievals from Envisat data, an experimental data record in the southern hemisphere, the delivery of trajectory-based Level 2 products and the availability of freeboard data in Level 2 and 3 products. Release of sea ice concentration data sets version 2.0

Tue, 2018-08-21 13:32

Version 2.0 of the Sea Ice Concentration (SIC) Climate Data Record data sets from AMSR-E and AMSR2 (2002-2017) were released on 28 February 2018. The SIC Climate Data Record data set from SMMR, SSMI and SSMIS (1979 – 2015) have previously been released.
The data sets are available at

Progress meeting no. 5 in Helsinki 31 January 2018

Fri, 2018-02-23 16:28

The fifth and last progress meeting was hosted by FMI in Helsinki, the where status of the final tasks were reviewed. The partners had requested more time to complete the remaining deliverables: D1.1: updated user requirement document, D4.1 Product validation and Inter-comparison Report, D4.2 Climate Data Record Package and D5.1 Climate Assessment Report. ESA agreed to extend the end date of the project to 31 July 2018.

Progress meeting no. 4 in Bergen 22 June 2017

Fri, 2017-05-12 12:44

The 4th progress meeting was hosted by the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center. The meeting had presentations of the progress of work in the last six months. 22 persons from all 11 partners attended. The deliverables linked to milestone 4, which was end of July 2017, were delayed until end of September.

Workshop on improved satellite retrievals of sea-ice concentration and sea-ice thickness, Hamburg, October 9 - 11 2017

Fri, 2017-05-12 09:36

This workshop is jointly organized by the Integrated Climate Data Center (ICDC), University of Hamburg, and the Max-Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), Hamburg, and co-sponsored by CliC, CliSAP, and ESA-CCI, aiming at both experts for sea-ice remote sensing and sea-ice modelling. New sensors and new algorithms have over the past few years allowed for sometimes significant progress in our ability to estimate sea-ice concentration and sea-ice thickness from space. Read more »

Sea Ice Concentration v2.0 ECV is now available

Mon, 2017-03-06 13:47

The Sea Ice CCI team is pleased to announce the release of a full reprocessing of the Sea Ice Concentration (SIC) v2.0 ECV. The release provides Climate Data Record (CDR) of SIC over the polar regions, derived from medium resolution passive microwave satellite data of AMSR-E (2002-2011) and AMSR2 (2012-2015). Read more »

International Workshop on Remote Sensing of Sea Ice, 23-24 January 2017, Tokyo

Mon, 2016-11-28 16:57

The topic of the workshop is "Retrieval of Total Sea Ice Concentration from AMSR-E and AMSR2 Data using Optimal Estimation Techniques” with specific focus on (1) Next generation sea ice retrieval algorithms including optimal estimation of sea ice and other related geophysical parameters from microwave radiometer data, and (2) Linking between modeling and observational sea ice communities, especially for the development of next generation sea ice models, a natural ground for data assimilation. Progress meeting of SICCI Phase 2: 1 - 2 December 2016, Bremen

Mon, 2016-11-28 16:56

The third progress meeting is hosted by University of Bremen. The main topics of the meeting are to discuss the new version of the SIC and SIT date sets, the validation work and dissemination to users during the remaining part of the project. The progress of the sea ice drift algorithms and the ice age option project are also presented.

Progress meeting of SICCI Phase 2: 15-16 June 2016, Hamburg

Thu, 2016-06-16 16:50

The second progress meeting of SICCI Phase 2 was hosted by University of Hamburg and Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. The focus of the meeting was to review the progress of the new SIC and SIT data sets and status of deliverables by month 18. The agenda for the meeting is attached.
