A gratifying aspect of XC has been the contribution of sounds of poorly known species and regions to the collection by locals. The sounds of Sitta ledanti from Algeria are a point in case. It was only discovered in 1975 in an area of northern Algeria and is endemic to that country. It turns out Algerians like Karim Haddad, organised in AquaCirta, are working to safeguard the only forests that the birds live in: mount Babor, the forest of Guerrouche and the forests of Tamentout and Bouafroune, the latter two going without formal protection up to this day. Only last month they secured evidence of its occurrence at a fifth location, the Lerabaa forest of Ouadjana in Jijel province. Excellent. Latest News July 15, 2020 Hello everyone, we will be updating the site tomorrow. If all goes well, everything will just keep running while we do it. Part of the regular update scheme, which has turned out to be quite irregular this year. Once it's done we'll highlight some of the changes. This has been temporarily suspended for some years now because of performance issues, but maybe those issues have been at least partially resolved now - and if not, could it be enabled only for selections below a certain limit in terms of number of recordings? We know the organisers and in fact they made us aware of the competition some time ago. Forgot about it. Wonder why :-) Anyway, they've instructed their community to be gentle on XC and have had some positive response. Let's see what happens later today. Willem-Pier Vellinga on June 21 @Bob Planqué I'm guessing it's because the terms of use for the Macaulay library are much more strict than most of Xeno Canto's data (which is almost all some variant of CC). The Macaulay library data can't be used "to make products of any kind (whether commercial or noncommercial)" which they clarify includes even just a simple website, the Kaggle competition itself may even count as a product.Full disclosure, I know this because I started working on a project in line with what the Kaggle competition is doing a few months and decided to use XC data instead of Cornell's because of this licensing. https://github.com/kbrose/chorus Kevin Rose on June 23 Hi Kevin, yes obviously. It's a shame the Macaulay library has such a restricted license. Bob Planqué on June 23 XC is still incredibly slow. I’ve tried opening XC on several browsers but still it takes ages to open.
