VHSL Reinstates Out-of-Season Practice In alignment with the Governor’s “Virginia’s Return to School Plan” announced on Tuesday, June 9, the VHSL Executive Committee has cleared the way for schools to begin out-of-season practice activities beginning Monday, June 15. By a majority vote taken on Wednesday, June 10, the Executive Committee reinstated the Out-of-Season Practice Rule 27-7-1 and suspended the Summer “dead period” for all athletic teams during the week of June 29 through July 4. Virginia's Return to School Plan Full Press Release VHSL Issues Statement on Recent Tragedies The VHSL has the privilege of serving and being part of a diverse community of student-athletes, coaches, school administrators, and officials. We have the unique privilege of offering opportunities for young people of color who contribute much to their school communities and who will one day make even greater contributions to this country and the world. We hope recent tragedies will inspire all students and our membership to seek and create change with empathy and honesty about the social and racial injustices faced by people of color every day in our country. The VHSL does not have all the answers but we embrace our obligation to empathize, sympathize, listen, encourage dialogue, and support our African American student-athletes and activity participants as we stand with them to end racial injustice in our country. Allstate Foundation Scholarships Awarded $28,500 in scholarships will be awarded to 19 Virginia high school seniors representing all parts of the commonwealth by The Allstate Foundation and the Virginia High School League. The Achievement Awards are the highest honors given by the VHSL to students who have excelled in the classroom, communities and in athletic and academic activities. The Allstate Foundation has partnered with VHSL for 13 years and contributed $289,000 in scholarship funds to empower and support the education of tomorrow’s future leaders. Niehoff, NFHS Executive Director, talks about the patience needed as states develop plans for restarting high school sports and activities. Dr. Niehoff is in her second year as executive director of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) in Indianapolis, Indiana. She is the first female to head the national leadership organization for high school athletics and performing arts activities and the sixth full-time executive director of the NFHS, which celebrated its 100th year of service during the 2018-19 school year. She previously was executive director of the Connecticut Association of Schools-Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference for seven years.
