New Zealand professional theatre dance: reviews, news and your viewsContributing constructively to the continuing conversation...Relatable, beautiful, challenging, engrossingThis short film gives an intimate look at a rehearsal of Douglas Wright's solo in his home space, contrasted with the same section of movement performed onstage, against the backdrop of a magnificent hanging tree. In his lounge space, I am pleasantly surprised with how he can stay virtually on the same spot, yet be so expressive with his body and tell the story he wants to portray. The phrase is very gestural and several motifs are repeated throughout. [more]Complex, visually stunning and rivetingFew dramatic works have been blessed with so successful and durable stage and film versions as Amadeus. The movie was most respectfully curated and used the best of film techniques and peak musicians to produce a multiple Oscar winner that caught the imagination of the world. This production deviates not a scintilla from that flawless achievement. [more]A joyous learning experienceThe premise is that NZ’s leading international dating agency, COLOUR – We Don’t See It, facilitates online Zoom meet-ups, or zui, between people who may be each other’s perfect match if only they understood each other. As the proprietor, Tukiwaho introduces a prime example: the zui between Hinep kohurangi Morehu (Tuakoi Ohia), who only speaks Te Reo M ori, and Adrian (Tyler Wilson K kiri) who only speaks English. The well-meaning translators are Kandii (Acushla-Tara Kupe), who translates Hine’s reo into English, and Jesus (Mataara Stokes) who translates Adrian’s English into Te Reo M ori. The results of their mahi will range from amusing to hilarious, at various levels, according to how much reo you know. [more]Still images moveThe two series in this exhibition, 'Liminalist' and 'Venetian', use light and shadow to create a dance against the backdrop of the human form. The two series are distinct, yet undoubtedly connected in their conceptions. [more]Episode 2: Strong performances but where’s the thrill? The absolute standouts in this episode are the acting performances from Cassandra Tse as Amy Louise Chen, Dryw McArthur as Joshua Marshall and Janelle Pollock as Bex ‘Wrathful’ Delaney. All are relaxed and very believable despite, on some occasions, having to deal with far too many words to say for no good reason. McArthur’s Joshua is particularly impressive. [more]See also reviews by:Adam Macaulay Offers timeless insights into the conflicting natures of loveSomehow the closed-in constraints and skilfully contrived dramaturgy of a ‘well-made-play’, set in a single room in linear time, is especially appropriate for a drama about loves that dare not speak their names: male homosexuality and female erotic passion. Because homosexuality was illegal throughout his career, Terence Rattigan – like his contemporary Tennessee Williams in the USA (and, 10 years their junior, Bruce Mason in NZ) – was obliged to depict ‘love’ only in cis-gendered heterosexual relationships. [more]Great interactive and entertaining funI think if 2020 has shown us anything, it’s the art of improvising – to adlib, to wing it, to play it by ear, to think on one’s feet and extemporise. Learning how to ‘take it as it comes’ and ‘go with the flow’ is perhaps a new normal for our world. So what better show to have in the school holidays for our kids who have had their wings clipped somewhat this year with COVID 19 restrictions; to explore the beauty of the imagination, playfulness and fun. But, gosh, aren’t we the fortunate ones sitting in a theatre awaiting a live show!!! [more]Gleefully played physical slapstickDisclaimer: I love playful, childish silliness and physical comedy! Even more than that, I love seeing kids in theatres enjoying this kind of fun with adults ‘guiltily’ loving it too (possibly even more than the kids, because face it, secretly we all wish we were children again and didn’t feel apologetic for enjoying silly jokes!). Spray and Wipe (Lizzie Tollemache and David Ladderman) are a likeable clowning duo bringing some ‘messy magic’ around NZ with a fun and energetic show – part magic, part slapstick, with a little bit of salt (or not so little salt) thrown in. [more]Reveals the root cause of disaffection by colonised and dispossessed cultures everywhereLes Blancs debuted on Broadway in late 1970, nearly six years after her death and 10 years after she felt provoked to write it, after seeing a US production of Jean Genet’s Les Negres (The Blacks). According to Wiki, Nemiroff described her response as “visceral ... she felt the Frenchman’s view of colonialism as too rooted in a romantic exoticism of Africa and hoped to write a more realistic account of African colonialism and the issues of power, politics, and identity that came with it.” [more]So much to love in this excellent ensemble pieceAs our group shuffles into the next space, led by an enthusiastic acolyte, we are met by a familiar sound that will always evoke memories of our weeks staying home. The moist slap and squelch of hand sanitizer hits us before the harsh scent of alcohol. As we are offered the requisite germ-killing squirt, a Kiwi bloke in the style of How To Dad vanquishes a personification of COVID, stamping her out with an iconic black gumboot, before we are allowed an audience with the Oracle and Deity of our C-19 crushing cult, Bloomfield and Ardern. Most notable were Centrepoint Theatre’s 24-Hour Challenge, the Auckland Theatre Company’s online adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull and Circa Theatre’s It’s Behind You! (see below).
