Dear friends in Christ,

The greatest commandment is to love God and love our neighbor.All of our actions as followers of Jesus are to be done in love.Sometimes that which is the loving thing to do is not the thing I actually want to do, and yet to be a follower of Jesus is to be willing to act in love even if it means sacrificing my own desires.

It is from this command to love that I have decided that the loving thing for all of our diocese is to move our larger diocesan events scheduled for this Fall, specifically the Gathering Day and Diocesan Convention to a virtual format.While we were planning on having an in-person gathering with vaccinated attendees and masks, it simply makes more sense to meet virtually instead, and will allow for greater participation.

For those who have made reservations at the Doubletree for Diocesan Convention, we will have those reservations automatically cancelled.Our office will be coordinating with registrants on refunds.More information about our virtual convention will come out as we get more details about the changes we need to make.

A link will come out shortly for our gathering day.Since it will be virtual we will all be together on one zoom for the gathering day, which will allow for the diocese to be together.

I am personally disappointed in needing to make this decision, and yet also am convinced it is the right thing to do.Meanwhile, let us all look forward to being together as a diocese for the visit of Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, April 29-May 1, 2022!

The mission of our diocese is to form, nurture and develop disciples of Jesus Christ in strong communities of faith for the transformation of ourselves, our communities and the world. That means we focus on discipleship: faith formation and faith in action, and developing faithful, healthy and effective communities of faith.

On the diocesan level we view all our work through that lens. When Canon Susan Cleveley moved into her role as Canon to the Ordinary, we lost the diocesan staff person who had as their full time focus and energy the work of developing faithful, healthy and effective communities of faith - the work of congregational development.

As a diocese we are committed to helping congregations: helping struggling congregations move into stable health, helping growing congregations continue to develop, helping congregations develop more robust stewardship, helping congregations learn how to reach new members, and reach out effectively in love to their community.

As a diocese we are committed to starting new communities of faith. In order to do this work it has become apparent that we need a staff person who is fully dedicated to the work of congregational development.

I am delighted to announce the call of Caroline McCall as the new Canon for Congregational Development.
