Each year, Hillel reaches 80% of the 1,750 Jewish undergraduate students on campus, with a dizzying array of different Jewish opportunities ranging from social justice to Israel, and from Jewish culture offerings to Jewish religious expression. No matter what your interest or Jewish background, Penn Hillel is there to get know each and every Jewish student by name and by story so that we can help connect them to the next set of experiences, communities and relationships that will provoke them to grow into Jewish adulthood.Hillel is proud to offer a two-pronged approach to engaging Jewish students on campus. Inside Steinhardt Hall, under the banner of Hillel, there are over 40 different student communities and initiatives that create over 300 events per month. This includes a weekly soup kitchen; a wide variety of opportunities to engage with and learn about Israel; world famous speakers and public intellectuals; and alternative break trips to Rwanda, Israel and beyond. All of this is in addition to the nearly 300 students who experience Shabbat each week, when we offer up to six different services on Friday nights and Saturday mornings. Hi friends! My name is Shira Silver and I am a Junior studying Philosophy and Computer Science. I am thrilled to be joining Sydney as Hillel Co-President this Spring! Hillel has been my home on campus since my very first day at Penn. After spending most of my life bouncing between different Jewish communities, Hillel gave me the gift of bringing diverse Jewish communities into one space, allowing me to participate and be a leader in each community I found meaningful. Over the past two years, I have worked hard to build bridges between Hillel s many communities. My Freshman year, I joined the Hillel Shabbat and Education committees, planning meals and hosting speakers that would attract a wide variety of students, including those less familiar with traditional Jewish settings. My Sophomore year, I became Co-Chair of Penn s Shira Chadasha partnership minyan, a community that prides itself on uniting students from many different backgrounds to pray and sing in harmony. As president this semester, I am excited to continue working with Hillel students and staff to create engaging programming that brings students together.
