What I learned at the ELFA and NEFA Conferences

Over the past few weeks, I have attended both the NEFA and ELFA conferences. The over-all feeling in the commercial equipment finance and leasing industry, across all sectors, is that business activity is strong, portfolio performance is record breaking, and short-term expectations are all positive. The industry is moving forward, and it was exciting to be back in-person with so many old friends and new acquaintances. Industry professionals were actively conducting business together and sharing their knowledge, expectations, and enthusiasm for the future.

The lessons learned from this year's conferences were extensive. I would like to share just few items from both conferences:

The 2021 association conferences, once again, confirmed the reasons why so many have had long, enjoyable careers in the commercial equipment finance and leasing industry. The participants are hardworking, dedicated professionals who aggressively compete with one another each day, but who can come together as life-long friends, truly support one another, and share best practices on a regular basis.

What Are Best and Worst States for Electric Vehicles?

Top 10 States to Own an EV: Massachusetts, Vermont, California, Hawaii, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Maine, Colorado and Maryland.

Worst 10 States to Own an EV: Louisiana, Kentucky, Idaho, Arkansas, North Dakota, Mississippi, Nebraska, West Virginia, Oklahoma, and Alabama.

While many Americans dream of driving an electric vehicle and fleets are moving toward electrification, with many under mandates, buyers still may hesitate to purchase EVs because of costs, range anxiety, or charging port inaccessibility.

New research by Jerry, an automated compare-and-buy insurance shopping app, shows that purchasing and driving an EV can be a great financial and logistical decision but that highly depends on where you live. Drivers in East or West Coast states like Massachusetts, Vermont, and California have numerous financial incentives to purchase EVs, and more access to charging ports. Drivers in Louisiana, Kentucky, and Idaho are not so lucky.

The study ranked states based on three factors: EV charging port density, gas savings, and government incentives. East and West Coast States comprise nine of the 10 best states to own an EV; Southern and Midwest states cover nine of the 10 worst states to own an EV.

Charging Station Availability

EV charging port distribution varies widely across states. Vermont and California top the list at 133 and 89 EV charging ports per 100,000 people. But theres a significant drop from there. Maryland has the third-most EV charging ports at 59 ports per 100,000 people, but that is less than half the amount Vermont has. The bottom three states -- Alaska, Kentucky, and Louisiana -- have 8-9 charging ports per 100,000 people (0.009% charging station density).

Incentives

State governments encourage EV adoption with various tax and subsidization incentives. California, Massachusetts, and Maryland have more than 10 local government incentives to support EV purchase and/or leasing. This includes EV purchase rebates of up to $7,500, charging port rebates, EV purchase income tax credits, electric charging cost rebates, and more. This is over 10 times the incentives that states like West Virginia, North Dakota, Kansas, Missouri, Wyoming, and others have, ranging from 0 to 1.

Now, 46 states and Washington D.C. incentivize EV adoption. Consumer incentives include HOV lane exemptions, EV purchase rebates, vehicle inspections/emissions test exemption, parking incentives, utility rate reductions, and more. For example, utility providers often reduce EV charging prices during off-peak hours. This can save drivers hundreds of dollars per year. Tax credits and rebates often offer several thousand dollars in savings the year a driver purchases their EV. States also have business-facing incentives. For example, California, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and nine other states require manufacturers to sell a certain amount of zero-emission vehicles per year.

Harley says EU Tariff Deal Will Save Company
Up to $225 Million in 2022

The trade deal between President Joe Biden and the European Union will save Harley-Davidson up to $225 million in tariff costs next year, the Milwaukee-based motorcycle maker said in a securities filing.

Harleys motorcycles were the target of increasing EU tariffs following the U.S. imposition of tariffs on European steel and aluminum in 2018 by President Donald Trump. The tariff on Harleys motorcycles increased from 6% to 31% and was set to increase to 56% in December.

The company had sought to avoid the tariffs by moving assembly of European motorcycles to Thailand, a move that led to Trump accusing Harley of waiving the White Flag. European regulators initially signed off on Harleys plans to use its Thailand facility to avoid the tariffs but later reversed course and imposed tariffs on those bikes

The deal will suspend the increased tariffs. Harley will save around $3 million in additional tariff costs for the remainder of 2021 as a result. The company is also still pursuing an appeal the EU decision on its bikes assembled in Thailand.

It also allows duty-free import of steel and aluminum from the EU at historical levels and calls for the two parties to develop an agreement that promotes trade in steel and aluminum produced at lower emission levels.

Jochen Zeitz, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Harley-Davidson, called the agreement a big win for Harley-Davidson, and our customers, employers and dealers in Europe.

We are excited that this brings an end to a conflict that was not of our making, and in which Harley-Davidson had no place. This is an important course correction in U.S.-EU trade relations, that will allow us to further Harley-Davidsons position as the most desirable motorcycle brand in the world, Zeitz said.

The additional tariff had added around $2,000 to the cost of a Harley and the company opted to cover the increase itself rather than passing it on to dealers or customers. Executives said passing the costs along would have priced Harleys product out of the market.

Europe is an important market for Harley. Combined with the Middle East and Africa, it has accounted for around 20% of worldwide retail sales in recent years, a figure that is primarily made up of sales in Europe.

The companys market share in Europe has slid in recent years from nearly 9% in 2019 to 7.7% in 2020 and 6% through the first three quarters this year.

The increased costs of the tariffs have been adding up for Harley. The company had $44.3 million in additional costs in the first three quarters of 2021 and is now expecting $61 million for the full year. It estimated the additional costs would total $200 million to $225 million in 2022.

For 2019 and 2020, the company had spent $97.9 million and $24.5 million respectively on increased tariff costs. Those figures also include increased costs on components imported from China under a separate tariff action implemented by the Trump administration in 2018.

The already ambitious global carbon emission reduction goals were dealt a significant blow this week as China, having recently pledged to end all futureforeign coal power projects, announced that they would be further committing to domesticcoalexpansion - likely pushing back the year the country expects to reach peak emissions (currently 2030), referencing a new phased timetable and roadmap for peaking carbon emissions

As data fromGlobal Energy Monitor aboveshows planned and under construction coal plants in China already totaled 238 projects in July 2021, equating to an expected 260,017 megawatts of capacity. This new output accounts for over half of the entire world's currently under construction coal energy capacity and puts China firmly ahead of all other countries still investing in the fossil fuel.
In a statement after a meeting of Beijings National Energy Commission, the Chinese premier, Li Keqiang said: Given the predominant place of coal in the countrys energy and resource endowment, it is important to optimize the layout for the coal production capacity, build advanced coal-fired power plants as appropriate in line with development needs, and continue to phase out outdated coal plants in an orderly fashion. Domestic oil and gas exploration will be intensified.

Trinity Capital Inc. Enters into New $300 Million
Credit Facility with KeyBank

Enhances financial flexibility and diversifies capital resources following its recently completed offering of $125 million of 4.375% Notes Due 2026

PHOENIX,  -- Trinity Capital Inc. (Nasdaq: TRIN) (Trinity), a leading specialty lending company that provides debt, including loans and equipment financing, to growth stage companies backed by technology banks, venture capital and private equity firms, today announced that it has entered into a new $300 million credit facility led by KeyBank N.A. (Key Bank). KeyBank is leading the credit facility with a commitment of $75 million, and the facility can accordion to $300 million as additional lenders are added to the lending syndicate, subject to the facility's credit agreement.

The credit facility has a term of five years, comprised of a three-year revolving period and a two-year amortization period. Borrowings under the facility will bear interest at a rate equal to the one-month London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR) plus 3.25%, with the ability to scale down to one-month LIBOR plus 2.85% based on certain factors, including the number and composition of the loans in the collateral pool. in new credit facilities in Q3

FTC Returns Nearly $60 Million to Drivers
Whose Tips Were Illegally Withheld by Amazon

The Federal Trade Commission is sending nearly $60 million to more than 140,000 Amazon drivers. The funds will serve as reimbursement for tips that Amazon allegedly illegally withheld from drivers between 2016 and 2019.

In 2021, the FTC brought a suit against Amazon and its subsidiary, Amazon Logistics, alleging that the company failed to fully pay tips that drivers in its Amazon Flex program had earned. Amazon Flex drivers deliver goods and groceries ordered through programs like Prime Now and AmazonFresh. The complaint alleged that the company secretly kept drivers tips over a two-and-a-half year period and only stopped the practice after becoming aware of the FTCs investigation in 2019.

Amazon agreed to settle the case and surrender all the money it withheld from its drivers. The settlement also prohibits Amazon from misrepresenting any drivers likely income or rate of pay, how much of their tips will be paid to them, as well as whether the amount paid by a customer is a tip. Amazon also will be prohibited from making any changes to how a drivers tips are used as compensation without the drivers express informed consent.

The FTC will be sending 139,507 checks and 1,621 PayPal payments to Amazon Flex drivers. Drivers who had more than $5 withheld by Amazon will receive the full amount of their withheld tips. The highest amount going to a single Amazon Flex driver is more than $28,000, while the average amount is $422.

People who receive checks should deposit or cash them before January 7, 2022, as indicated on the check. Recipients who have questions about their checks should call the refund administrator, Rust Consulting, at 1-800-654-8874. The FTC never requires people to pay money or provide account information to cash a refund check.

Drivers whose payments total more than $600—19,980 drivers in total—will receive an IRS Form 1099 with their payment and should report this income on their tax return.

The FTCs interactive dashboards for refund data provide a state-by-state breakdown of FTC refunds. In 2020, FTC actions led to more than $483 million in refunds to consumers across the country, but the United States Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that the FTC lacks authority under Section 13(b) to seek monetary relief in federal court going forward. The Commission has urged Congress to restore the FTCs ability to get money back for consumers.

Our wine reviewer emailed, This gem from Paso Robles, California is available at a number of grocery stores, wine shops and at Trader Joes. At $9.99/bottle retail (it costs $17/bottle at the winery), it serves up quality that you will find in wines that cost double or even triple that price point. Strong oak and fruity currant on the nose, very fruit forward and balanced, and a pleasant, smooth finish. Really dark and inky, too. I became a fan of J. Lohr wines back in the mid-1990s and their wines just keep getting better, and their prices have stayed quite reasonable. This 1998 cabernet is well worth the purchase!.

Great wines at great prices is just one reason my wife and I shop at Trader Joes. Our latest find is the Paso Robles 2019 Syrah Lot 100, which was produced by an unknown winery. Coming in at $9/bottle, this wine is well worth the money. The strong scent of fruit is apparent upon opening, and the inky purple-black color clings to the wine glass. The flavor palate is medium-bodied but restrained, with just enough fruits and jam and a subtle hint of spice. Buy two bottles and give one bottle another couple years before opening.

1655 - Penobscot Indians in Maine are declared to be enemies, rebels traitors to His Majesty, bounties are offered to colonists for scalps: £40 British pounds for a male, £20 for females, and male children under 12. Girls under 12 were apparently worthless. On the side of the English it was a war of extermination, with standing bounties for scalps (or heads), increasing from five pounds in 1675 to forty pounds in 1703 for every scalp of a male above ten years, and at last, in1744, one hundred pounds for the scalp of every male above twelve years of age and fifty for that of a woman or child. Prisoners were sold as slaves (see Williamson). In 1706, Governor Dudley reported that he had not left an Indian habitation or planting field undestroyed. Shortly afterward it was estimated that one-third of the Abnaki had been exterminated by war, disease, or exposure within seven years

1718 - Birthday of John Montague (d. 1792), born at London, England.  The inventor of the sandwich, Fourth Earl of Sandwich, England's first lord of the admiralty, secretary of state for the northern department, postmaster general and the man after whom Captain Cook named the Sandwich Islands in 1778. A rake and a gambler, he is said to have invented the sandwich as a time-saving nourishment while engaged in a 24-hour-long gambling session in 1762.
1741 - The Augusta County Regiment was organized on this date. Men from this regiment would fight under Lieutenant Colonel George Washington during the French and Indian War (1755-1763); again under Washington during the Revolutionary War (1775-1783); and under General Thomas Stonewall Jackson during the Civil War, where the regiment earned the nickname Stonewall Brigade it still carries today. Its descendant unit, the 116th Infantry, became part of the 29th Infantry Division in 1917 and saw heavy fighting with it in both world wars, including leading the assault wave on Omaha Beach on D-Day. In the War on Terror different battalions of the 116th Infantry, still part of the 29th Division, have served on missions ranging from guarding the perimeter (but not the prisoners) of Guantanamo Bay in Cuba to teaching soldier skills and combat tactics to the members of the newly organized Afghan army.
1793 - Birthday of Stephen Fuller Austin (d. 1836), born at Wythe County, VA. A principal founder of Texas, for whom its capital city was named, Austin first visited Texas in 1821 and established a settlement there the following year, continuing a colonization project started by his father, Moses Austin. Thrown in prison when he advocated formation of a separate state (Texas still belonged to Mexico), he was freed in 1835, lost a campaign for the presidency of the Republic of Texas to Sam Houston in 1836, and died shortly thereafter while serving as Texas secretary of state.
1794 - Birthday of William Cullen Bryant, (d. 1878) American Poet (Thanatopsis), born at Cummington, MA.
    1796 - John Adams was elected president. Adams's ascension to the presidency was neither automatic nor unanimous. Before achieving that high office, had to emerge victorious from America's first contested presidential election. Eight years earlier, in September 1787, the delegates to the Constitutional Convention had considered numerous plans for choosing a president.
1813 - American troops destroy the Indian village of Tallahatchie in the Mississippi Valley. US troops under Gen Coffee destroyed an Indian village at Talladega, Ala. The Creeks having assembled at the town of Tallahatchie, thirteen miles from the camp, the commander-in-chief dispatched Coffee, now promoted to the rank of brigadier-general, with one thousand men, with one-half of whom he was directed to attack the enemy, and with the other half to scour the country near the Ten Islands, for the purpose of covering his operations. Richard Brown, with a company of Creeks and Cherokees, wearing on their heads distinguishing badges of white feathers and deer's tails, accompanied the expedition. Fording the Coosa at the Fish Dam, four miles above the islands, Coffee advanced to Tallahatchie, surrounded it at the rising of the sun, and was fiercely met by the savages with whoops and the sounding of drums--the prophets being in advance. Attacking the decoy companies, they were soon surrounded by the troops, who charged them with great slaughter. After a short but terrible action, eighty-four women and children were made prisoners, while the bodies of one hundred and eighty-six warriors were counted upon the field, where some women also perished.
    1840 - The first dental college was the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, organized in Baltimore, MD, in 1839 and opened this day with five students. The faculty consisted of H. Willis Baxter, MD., professor of anatomy and physiology; Thomas E. Bond, Jr. M.D, professor of special pathology and therapeutics; Chapin Aaron Harris, MD, professor of practical dentistry, and Horace Henry Hayden, MD, professor of dental physiology and pathology. The college is now the School of Dentistry, University of Maryland, Baltimore.
    1841 - Isabella MacDonald Alden (d. 1930) birthday, Rochester, NY.  Author of nearly 75 religious books, mainly for children. At her peak, she sold more than 100,000 books a year. She was a staff member of several magazines.

    1845 - Edward Douglass White (d. 1921), Ninth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, born at La Fourche Parish, LA. During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate Army after which he returned to New Orleans to practice law. Elected to the US Senate in 1891, he was appointed to the Supreme Court by Grover Cleveland in 1894. He became Chief Justice under President William Taft in 1910 and served until 1921.
    1868 - Republican Ulysses S. Grant won the presidential election over Democrat Horatio Seymour. Schyuler Colfax was elected vice president. Grant's popular majority was a scant 306,000 out of 5,715,000 votes, although his margin in the electoral college count was 214 to 80. The black vote, which totaled over 700,000, decided the election for Grant.   
1887 - Nathaniel S. Nat Fleisher (d. 1972), sportswriter born at New York, NY. Fleischer founded The Ring magazine in 1922, a publication generally regarded worldwide as The Bible of Boxing. He served as editor and publisher, produced a record book and wrote over 50 boxing biographies and histories.
    1892 - In Laporte, Indiana, the first successful automatic telephone system was introduced. It was invented by Almond Strowger, who came up with the idea because non-automatic systems allowed his competitor to intercept his customers calls. Strowger's job? He ran a funeral parlor.
    1890 - The temperature at Los Angeles, CA, reached 96 degrees, a November record for 76 years.

    1908 - Birthday of Bronislau Bronko Nagurski (d. 1990), born at Rainy River, Ontario, Canada. College Football Hall of Fame and charter member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he played football at the University of Minnesota, earning All-American honors at both tackle and fullback, and for the Chicago Bears. After retirement from football, Nagurski wrestled professionally.
    1911 - The first Continuation school for adults established by a state government was the Racine Continuation School, Racine, WI, which opened this day to offer evening instructions to adults, as well as to children from 14 to 16 years of age who had permits to work.
    1914 - Nevada's men vote in women's suffrage six years before the national franchise was ratified, thanks in great part to Anne Henrietta Martin, who headed the history department at the University of Nevada. She took the leadership role in the campaign which gave Nevada women the vote. AHM was president of the militant National Woman's party but joined Carrie Chapman Catt and Janna Addams in their Woman's Peace party. Her writings were published in the leading magazines of the day. Martin had been active with Emmeline Pankhurst in London, England, and was arrested for demonstrating there in 1910. Returning to Nevada, she led the state suffrage amendment to victory.

    1916 - The experimental playwrights theateropened in New York. The premiere featured three short plays: The Game, by journalist and social activist Louise Bryant; King Arthur's Socks, a comedy by Floyd Dell; and Bound East for Cardiff, a one-act play by then unknown playwright Eugene O'Neill. The November 3 production marked the New York debut of one the most influential American artists of the twentieth century. O'Neill, who wrote more than twenty full-length plays over the course of the next two decades, is credited with transforming American theater into a literary medium which, in its artistry, rivaled the best in American fiction and painting. Rank and organization: Captain, U.S. Army, 356th Infantry, 89th Division. Place and date: Near Le Champy Bas, France, 3 November 1918. Entered service at: Denver, Colo. Birth: Eureka Springs, Ark. G.O. No.: 20, W.D., 1919. Citation: When his battalion, of which he had just taken command, was halted by machinegun fire from the front and left flank, he picked up the rifle of a dead soldier and, calling on his men to follow led the advance across a stream, waist deep, in the face of the machinegun fire. Upon reaching the opposite bank this gallant officer was seriously wounded in the abdomen by a sniper, but before permitting himself to be evacuated he made complete arrangements for turning over his command to the next senior officer, and under the inspiration of his fearless leadership his battalion reached its objective. Capt. Chiles died shortly after reaching the hospital.
    1918 - Birthday of Robert William Andrew Bob Feller (d. 2010), Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher, born Van Meter, IA.  Feller played 18 seasons for the Cleveland Indians from 1936 to 1941 and from 1945 to 1956, interrupted by a four years in the US Navy during World War II. In a career spanning 570 games, Feller posted a 266–162 record, 279 complete games, 44 shutouts, and a 3.25 ERA.  Feller heard about the Pearl Harbor bombing while returning from a visit to his terminally ill father at Des Moinesto Chicago where he was to sign a new Indians contract.  Two days later, he volunteered for the United States Navy, becoming the first American professional athlete to enlist. Historians conservatively estimated that his military service cost him nearly 100 wins.  A prodigy who bypassed the minor leagues, Feller first played for the Indians at the age of 17. His career was interrupted by four years of military service in World War II, during which time he served as Chief Petty OfficeraboardUSS Alabama. In his first game back, in 1946, he tossed a four-hitter to defeat the Detroit Tigers.  Feller became the first pitcher to win 24 games in a season before the age of 21. During his career, he threw 3 no-hitters and 12 one-hitters(his no-hitters and one-hitters were records at the time of his retirement). He helped the Indians win the 1948 World Seriesand an AL-record-record 111 wins and the pennantin 1954. Feller led the ALin winssix times and in strikeoutsseven times. In 1946, he recorded 348 strikeouts, a total not exceeded for 19 years. An eight-time All-Star, Feller was ranked 36th on Sporting News list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players and was named the publication's greatest pitcherof his time. Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company A, 34th Infantry, 24th Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Capoocan, Leyte. Philippine Islands, 3 November 1944. Entered service at: Chippewa Falls, Wis. Birth: Chippewa Falls, Wis. G.O. No.: 17, 11 February 1946. Citation: He was an assistant squad leader in an attack against strongly defended enemy positions on both sides of a stream running through a wooded gulch. As the squad advanced through concentrated fire, the leader was killed and Sgt. Mower assumed command. In order to bring direct fire upon the enemy, he had started to lead his men across the stream, which by this time was churned by machinegun and rifle fire, but he was severely wounded before reaching the opposite bank. After signaling his unit to halt, he realized his own exposed position was the most advantageous point from which to direct the attack, and stood fast. Half submerged, gravely wounded, but refusing to seek shelter or accept aid of any kind, he continued to shout and signal to his squad as he directed it in the destruction of 2 enemy machineguns and numerous riflemen. Discovering that the intrepid man in the stream was largely responsible for the successful action being taken against them, the remaining Japanese concentrated the full force of their firepower upon him, and he was killed while still urging his men on. Sgt. Mower's gallant initiative and heroic determination aided materially in the successful completion of his squad's mission. His magnificent leadership was an inspiration to those with whom he served.

The results were not in until this day, but the election held on November 2 where Harry S. Truman was reelected president of the United States in a major political upset. Alvin W. Barkley was elected vice president. Political analysts and polls had predicted that Truman's Republican opponent, Gov. Thomas E. Dewey of New York would win. 1957 - Sun Records released Jerry Lee Lewis's Great Balls of Fire, backed with You Win Again. It became his biggest hit, reaching Number 2 on the pop charts, Number 3 on the rhythm and blues charts, and Number 5 on the country and western charts

    1960 - On Broadway, the play, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, opened. It would go on to become a theater standard in the United States and launched the career of its star Shirley MacLaine.
    1962 - He's A Rebel topped the Billboard Hot 100, credited to The Crystals. The song was actually recorded by a trio known as the Blossoms, featuring lead singer Darlene Love. Phil Spector had hastily put the song together while The Crystals were out of town and put their name on the label because they had already had two top twenty hits with There's No Other and Uptown.
    1962 - James Baldwin's Letter from a Region in My Mind (later titled in book form, The Fire Next Time, published in The New Yorker. Baldwin warns that if Americans do not now dare everything to eradicate racism, the fulfillment of that Biblical prophecy would occur. God gave Noah the rainbow sign/ No more water, the fire next time.

1964 - Citizens of the District of Columbia voted in a presidential election for the first time.  They went to the polls to choose between Democrat Lyndon Baines Johnson and Republican Barry Goldwater. Johnson received 85.6 percent of their votes.
    1964 - Lyndon B. Johnson was elected United States president by a huge margin over Barry Goldwater. Sen. Hubert Horatio Humphrey was elected vice president. The electoral vote was Johnson, 486; Sen. Barry M. Goldwater, Republican, 52. The popular vote was Johnson, 43,126,506; Goldwater, 27,176,799. In congressional elections, the Democrats gained one Senate seat for a 68-32 majority and 37 House seats for a 295-140 majority.
    1964 - Philadelphia voters approve $25 million dollars to build a new sports stadium.  Ten years after the Athletics moved to Kansas City and with Connie Mack Stadium aging quickly, voters okayed what would become Veterans Stadium to house the MLB Phillies and the NFL Eagles.
    1965 - In a unanimous vote, Sandy Koufax (26-8, 2.04, 382) wins Cy Young Award. The Dodger southpaw also received the honor in 1963 and will be named again next season.

    1969 - Public Television debuts: a string of local educational TV channels united under the Public Broadcasting System banner. PBS is funded by a combination of member stationdues, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, National Datacast, pledge drives, and donations from both private foundations and individual citizens. All proposed funding for programming is subject to a set of standards to ensure the program is free of influence from the funding source.  PBS has more than 350 member stations, many owned by educational institutions, nonprofit groups both independent or affiliated with one particular local public school districtor collegiate educational institution, or entities owned by or related to state government.
    1974 - U.S. Representative Harold Eugene Ford Sr. became the first African American from the state of Tennessee to be elected to Congress and served from 1975 until his retirement in 1997. His son Harold Ford, Jr. was also the first African-American in U.S. history to succeed his father in congress

    1977 - By an act of the U.S. Congress, women who trained airmen in World War II and transported planes to England (unarmed) were finally granted veteran's benefits after seeking them in vain for 34 years. The air force considered them civilians and blocked any veteran benefits for the Women's Air Force Service Pilots (WASPS) headed by the undisputed greatest pilot of them all, Jacqueline Cochran.  In 1974, the National Organization for Women (NOW) joined in the campaign to get full military honors and benefits for the WASPS who flew 50 million miles during World War II. Thirty-nine lost their lives on duty. The women, among other things, towed the targets that rookie flyboys used live ammunition to shoot at. They weren't always accurate.The women received no military benefits and even their burial expenses were paid for by their families.
The women received no military retirement, medical, or educational benefits that all men in World War II received, even those men who never left the U.S. or were in safe posts and never in any danger. On May 22, 1979, the surviving WASPS - fewer than 800 - finally received official military status from the Defense Department.

    1987 - Twenty-one cities, mostly in the Ohio Valley, reported record high temperatures for the date. The afternoon high of 80 degrees at Columbus, OH was their warmest reading of record for so late in the season. Showers and thundershowers associated with a tropical depression south of Florida produced 4.28 inches of rain at Clewiston in 24 hours.
    1987 - The growing acceptance of women as political leaders was indicated by the re-election of Kathy Whitmire as mayor of Houston, TX, and the elections of mayors Annette Strauss of Corpus Christi, TX, Betty Turner of Charlotte, NC, and a black woman Carrie Saxon-Perry of Hartford, CT.
    1989 - Cold weather prevailed in the central U.S. Six cities in Texas, Minnesota, and Michigan, reported record low temperatures for the date. The low of 7 above zero at Marquette, MI was their coldest reading of record for so early in the season.

    1992 - Bill Clinton was elected as the 42nd president of the United States, defeating President Bush. Sen. Al Gore, Jr. was elected vice president. Clinton defeated Bush by 370 to 168 electoral votes. Independent candidate H. Ross Perot received no electoral votes. The popular vote was Clinton, 43,728,375; Bush, 38,167,416; and Perot, 18,237,237. The Democrats held their 57-43 majority in the Senate. In the House the Democrats lost nine seats but retained a majority of 259-175, with one independent.
    1992 - Carol Mosely Braun, a Democrat from Chicago, IL became the first African-American woman to be elected a US Senator.
1995 - Hootie and the Blowfish reach an out-of-court settlement with Bob Dylan for an undisclosed amount after courts rule the adult alternative powerhouse group lifted lyrics from Dylan's Tangled Up In Blue for their recent hit Only Wanna Be With You.
1996 – SF Forty Niners wideout Jerry Rice became the first in history to catch 1,000 passes.  He finished his career with 1,549.
    1997 – California law ends affirmative action.
    1997 - Bill Shoemaker, the winningest jockey in history and a successful trainer, after his riding career ended, retired from horse racing at the conclusion of the Oak Tree meeting at the Santa Anita race track. Shoemaker rode 8,833 winners and won over $41 million in purses. After his last ride on Feb 3, 1990, he turned to training. This second career was interrupted by an automobile accident in 1991 that left him paralyzed from the neck down. He returned to work after five months of rehabilitation and landed in the winner's circle just two days later.
    1998 - Minnesota elected former pro-wrestler Jesse Ventura as its governor.
    2001 - In Game 6, the Diamondbacks get 21 hits in the first six innings against the Yankees to set a record for hits in a World Series game. The previous record of 20 was established by the 1921 Giants (Game 3 vs Yankees) and the 1946 Cardinals (Game 4 vs Red Sox).
    2010 – A sophisticated tunnel used by drug smugglers between Tijuana and Otay Mesa, CA was discovered by the US Border Patrol.
2014 – One World Trade Center opened 13 years after terrorists destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Center.  The tower is one of 5 to be built on the same site and, at 1773 feet high, is now the US tallest building.
