The Most Rev. Dr. John Baptist Sequeira, Bishop Emeritus of Chikmagalur Diocese passed away on Wednesday, 09-10-2019 at 11.20 pm at the age of 89. He was laid to rest on 11-10-2019. He was a priest for 61 years and a Bishop for 32 years. The Most Rev. Dr. J. B. Sequeira was born on 23-06-1930 to devout parents Late Balthazar Sequeira and Late Piedade Sequeira at Katipalla, Dakshina Kannada district. He was the 6th of their 7 children of whom the youngest is Rev. Sr. Margret FSM. He joined the seminary for the Diocese of Mysuru and was ordained a Priest for the then undivided Diocese of Mysore on 15-04-1958. He served at Chikmagaluru St Joseph’s Parish for 2 years as an Assistant Parish Priest, at Magge for a year and a half and then at Sakleshpur for 3 months, all three places then a part of the diocese of Mysuru. Thereafter he was transferred to St Peter’s Pontifical Seminary at Malleswaram, Bangalore as a member of the staff. Later, he was sent to Paris where he completed Licentiate in Canon Law. After serving in the seminary for some years he was again sent to Paris for Pre-Doctoral course. Due to shortage of the staff, once again he went to Paris to complete his Doctorate. In the meantime, Mysuru diocese was bifurcated and the diocese of Chikmagalur was formed in 1963. Bishop J.B. Sequeira became a part of the new diocese. After about 20 years as a member of the staff at St Peter’s Pontifical Seminary, he was consecrated and installed second Bishop of the Diocese of Chikmagalur on 11-06-1987 succeeding Archbishop Emeritus the Most Rev. Dr Alphonsus Mathias. At his age of 75, he submitted his resignation which was accepted when he was 77. After retirement, he sought for a place of rest in the home for the aged run by the Little sisters of the Poor, Bangalore. The Sisters were generous to accept him and make their house his home for the rest of his life. He wished and willed to have his last journey to heaven to begin in the convent of Little Sisters and have his place of repose at Hosur Road Cemetery, Bangalore meant for the Catholic Laity. The Most Rev. Dr. Peter Machado, the Archbishop of Bangalore, The Most Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Swamy the Bishop of Chikmagalur along with Archbishops Emeriti, Bishops from Karnataka, the Clergy, Religious and the faithful from various dioceses and his family members, participated in teh funeral ceremonies. All the secretaries and joint secretaries attended the meeting. Report of each commission was presented. The action plan for the year 2020 has been prepared. Both the coordinators Rev Fr Ronald Cardoza and Rev Fr Shanthraj R moderated the meeting. This is a glimpse of Marriage Preparation Coures conducted at Mudigere on the 12th and 13th of Novrmber 2019. 27 marriageable have participated. The Diocese of Chikmagalur was erected on Nov. 16, 1963, by Pope Paul VI with territory taken from the Diocese of Mysore. Initially it covered the three districts of Chikmagalur, Hassan and Shimoga. Bishop Alphonsus Mathias served as the first Bishop of Chikmagalur. The district of Shimoga was detached in January, 1989, to form part of the newly erected Diocese of Shimoga. Nestled at 3,400ft in the Sahyadri mountains, Chikmagalur is situated in the Western Ghats region, a major watershed in the southwestern part of Karnataka state. Typical of Ghat topography, the town offers vistas of mountains, streams, and coffee and pepper plantations. A number of rivers — the Bhadra, Hemavathi, Tunga, Netravathi, Vedavathi — originate in the hills surrounding the town. It was here that coffee was first cultivated in India, in 1670 by Baba Budan. The revered Muslim leader had brought coffee seeds from Yemen, and the Baba Budan mountain range to the north of the town is named after him.
