The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre (BWoSCC) was officially opened in February 2008. The Beatson provides all the radiotherapy, and much of the chemotherapy, for patients with cancer in Scotland s west. We offer our service and care to 60% of Scotland s population 2.5 million people. World-leading cancer centre The Beatson is Scotland s largest cancer centre. A leader in many areas of cancer research and treatment, we see more than 8,000 new patients every year. Global reputation Named after Sir George Beatson, a pioneering surgeon at Glasgow s first cancer hospital, the Beatson is Europe s busiest treatment centre. It serves 2.5 million people across the West of Scotland working with five health boards. This extremely large patient base, together with the high prevalence of cancer across the region, means that there are significant challenges for leading cancer professionals in the fields of research, drug trials and clinical care. Drawn by unprecedented investment and a world-wide reputation in cancer care, many of the world s foremost experts are here already, transforming patient outcomes and survival rates. Advanced equipment A key reason why the Beatson attracts leading cancer professionals is the cutting-edge equipment. The Beatson is home to thirteen linear accelerators, of which eight are the advanced Varian TrueBeam systems, two PET-CT Scanners, Image Guided Radiotherapy, plus a new Brachytherapy Unit. We ve also secured Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) technology to deliver Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy more effectively. We also have two TrueBeam STX120s at the Lanarkshire Beatson. Innovative care With 103 beds spread across three floors of calming in-patient wards, the Beatson is one of the most modern cancer care centres in Europe. Advanced care facilities include a dedicated teen cancer ward complete with chill out zone, plus a 4-bed Hugh Acuity Unit staffed by Critical Care Nurses who share their expertise throughout the hospital. There is an Acute Oncology Assessment Unit staff by highly trained ANPs who also deliver a helpline service for patients on cancer treatment. The Beatson is also home to the country s busiest Chemotherapy Unit, delivering over 25,000 cycles a year from 36 treatment stations. What s more, this unit is supported by a cutting-edge Cancer Pharmacy that s closely involved in clinical trials of new therapies.
