You'll cry out of joy
Let's give a child the honor to beautify STAF, Inc.'s first web page with his impressive singing
Parents always have extreme confidence in their kids' talents. But here's the surprise: The kid is good and actually outshines the adult singer in the video. It's a mystery how this adorable child bundled up in a stroller ended up joining a street performer in a duet. But the toddler can belt out a tune andis nowcatching the attention of the Web - thanks to the videofilmed by Kamil Litwinowicz.
Someone, probably dad, is seen at the beginning of the clip positioning the stroller next to the singer, who is performing on the main square in Krakow, Poland. He then walks off camera to enjoy the show, which quickly becomes a duetand aWeb hit. Even though the tyke doesn't know the words to the operatic melody they come out as "goo goo g a ga "--the kid is in tune and even overshadows the adult professional.
The video of the child's musical stylings, posted on Dec. 2, 2012, havehit a high note, with more than 1,000 000 views on YouTube.
Next time we'd like to see this budding crooner team up with Justin Bieber.

Can HearingSoftMusic in the Womb Boost Babies' Brain Development?
Click:Baroque music for babies while they are still in the womb could boost their brain development, a new study suggests.Finnish researchers reported the findings Oct. 30 in the journalPLoS One.
"Even though we've previously shown that fetuses could learn minor details of speech, we did not know how long they could retain the information," study author Eino Partanen, from the University of Helsinki, said in a journal news release. "These results show that babies are capable of learning at a very young age, and that the effects of the learning remain apparent in the brain for a long time."
In conducting the study, the researchers asked women in their third trimester of pregnancy to play "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" at least five times per week. Meanwhile, a separate group of women did not play any music during their final trimester.
Shortly after birth, the researchers measured the infants' brain activity when they listened to "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" as well as a similar tune with some different notes in it, to determine if any learning had taken place. They repeated this assessment when the babies were 4 months old.
They found that when infants heard the song before birth, their brain activity was much stronger when they heard the original song than when they heard the modified version. The effect was still present when the babies were 4 months old.
The researchers said the period between the 27th week of pregnancy and six months after a baby is born is critical to the development of the auditory system.
In this research project a "simple""Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" melody was used. Several other studies have shown that the effect of the Baroquemusicis the deepest most beneficial for the unborn, for children and adult of any age.

He is temped to ruin his career, health his long-term success. The people around him use drugs and he has been seen joining his friend in this life-destroying habit.
The worldwide publicity he has earned at a young age will not last in case Mr. Bieber continues on the same road. No one in his age can understand and handle the pressure of the worldwide publicity he is experiencing. Mr. Bieber needs the strongest counselor to keep him on the safe road.

SEE BELOW:ADDITIONAL DETAILS RELATING TO THESE PUBLIC FIGURES
===============================================
INTHIS AREA OF THE WEBSITE THE SITE IS TEMPORARILY MALFUNCTIONING.
The list of the 8 is introduced here but for a reason, unknown to as at the STAF, Inc., is not appearing.
The web provider Weebly is looking into it and is repairing this malfunctioning.
==============================================
The following public figures are the5 other professionals receiving STAF, Inc.'s invitation to get our help to solve their challenge they are presently going through without any solution
Based on the researched facts for each of the following individuals, STAF, Inc. is fully convinced our help and guidance will clear their challenges.
This website seems to have a temporary technical problem and it is not saving all as written. (The web provider is looking into the problem.) When the challenge is repaired, additional details for each of the following professionals' invitation text will be added.)
Theother 5 professionals are
(3) Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey - his challenge is overweight/obesity and serious, life-threatening asthma. The talented, result-bringing governor Christie deserves his full health, so do the people of New Jersey. No one has been capable of helping Mr. Christie. STAF, Inc. is convinced, we can solve governor Christie's challenges.
(4) Mr. Tiger Woods - everyone in the USA and worldwide knows his challenge. He has had many helpers - none of the has solved Mr. Wood's life income ruining difficulties. Now, when Mr. Woods is "at the end of his rope" and sees "he is all lost" - no one has been capable of helping him back to life - then (and not before) STAF, Inc. will be available. We know, for sure, how to solve all his challenges.
Mr. Woods was (still is, but not for long, if he does not get STAF, help fast) financially the richest athlete in the world. Now Mr. Woods has lost hundreds of millions, and is going to lose in the billion scale without STAF's result-bringing guidance. He is hiring help to teach him to play golf. If these hired people would know how to teach Woods, they would themselves win in billions. Mr. Woods problems are not in being capable of playing winning golf - his problems are in his mental faculty paralyzing his mind fully. His golf playing is worse than a 7-years old child. STAF, Inc. professionals are the leading masters in these issues. Dr. Christian von Christophers is the founder of SUCCESSOLOGY (Reg.U.S.Pat.Off. 1991), the new science for life success.
It is easier to give Mr. Woods back his life and the mastery of winning golf mastery than to make a paralyzed man walk. (See above the facts relating to the paralyzed man in the Congress woman Michele Bachmann's invitation text.)
(5) The Royal Couple of Monaco, Prince Albert II and his wife Princess Charlene, and
(6) The newly-wed Royal Couple of Britain, Prince William and his wife
Ms. Kate Middleton, now Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge
Both of these Royal Couple have a similar "history" in their family.
The fact is, similar incidences are prone to happen in the same family tree.
(5) Monaco: HSH Prince Albert II and his wife HSH Princess Charlene, married in July, 2011.
Ms. Charlene Wittstock is from South Africa and one-time Olympic swimmer.
(6) Britain: Prince William's mother, Princess Diana, born July 1, 1961, was killed August 31, 1997, in Paris, France, in a car accident after serious marital challenges including mutual infidelity between Princess Diana and Prince William's father,Prince Charles of Britain.
Prince William's wife is Ms. Kate Middleton, now Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.
In Monaco, the present ruler's mother, the Hollywood movie star Grace Kelly died in a car accident in 1956 -as did Princess Diana in the late 90's in France (ifshe had followed Dr. Christian's advice, Princess Diana would probably still be happily alive). Prince William also has a hair thinning challenge at a young age. STAF, Inc.'s specialist believes Prince William will get a healing solution for his hair challenge in STAF, Inc.'s counseling - only by natural methods, no negative side effects.
(7) Mr.Diallo SanoussyGallice, Jr.from theRepublicof Guinea, in Africa,is preparing towinthe Presidency of hiscountry. Dr. Christian's effective results bringing reputation has now reached the African continent. Mr. Diallo haschosen Dr. Christian, theworld's leading, #1Successologist, to guide him to become the President of his country, Guinea. See additional, detailed information relating to Mr. Diallo above in thetext titled "The 7 Public Figures Are".
All of the above public figures will get their personal services with the double-guarantee
at the STAF, Inc.
See the double-guarantee info above in President Obama's invitation text - the #1 invitation above.

Drink Savvy, a Boston-based company, has created a material that changes color when it comes in contact with a drug-spiked drink.
FounderMike Abramsonsaid he plans to use the discovery to create a set of products, including cups, glassware, stirrers and straws, that he hopes will be used to help reduce date rape.
"Within the past three years, three of my very close friends and myself have been the unwitting victims of being drugged,"Abramsonsaid in a fundraising video.
The company is trying to raise $50,000 so it can produce the cups and straws and begin selling them online, according to a fundraising appeal posted on the website Indiegogo.
Date rape drugs, including the three most common, GHB, Ketamine and Rohypnol, are odorless, colorless and tasteless, according to theNational Institute on Drug Abuse, making them difficult to detect.
Abramson estimates that more than a million people every year are drugged and sexually assaulted. In the video he said he hopes his product will "prevent someone you care about from possibly being the victim of drug-facilitated sexual assault."
Last year,Israeli scientistsannounced the development of a sensor that looks like a straw or a stirrer that can detect two of the most commonly used date rape drugs with 100 percent accuracy.

Fast-food (read: "bad-food") breakfast sandwiches could be a time bomb in a bun and eating even one fat-laden morning meal has immediate adverse effects on your arteries, according to a new study presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress meeting in Toronto.
A high-fat diet is linked to increased risk for atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries due to plaque deposits), but the study suggests that damage that could lead to a heart attack or stroke may start sooner than was previously thought.
Just one day of eating a fat-laden breakfast sandwichsuch as egg, cheese and ham sandwich on a bun and "your blood vessels become unhappy," said Heart and Stroke Foundation researcher Dr. Todd Anderson, director of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta and head of cardiac science at the University of Calgary
(click green)in a statement(Ref. article #1)
The study measured blood flow through the forearm in 20 healthy people (average age 23). The researchers mentioned that the sandwich used in the study contained ham, egg, and cheese but did not name the restaurant from which it came. The goal was to reveal the risks of eating a general type of widely available breakfast sandwich, not to point the finger at specific restaurant. The test was done twice: once on a day when theyd eaten two fast-food breakfast sandwiches of a type that available anywhere in the US or Canada, and again on another day when theyd fasted. The sandwiches contained a whopping 50 grams of fat and 900 calories.
(click green)7 Warning Signs of A Heart Attack
Impaired Blood Flow Two Hours After Meal
Compared to volunteers who skipped breakfast, those who consumed the fatty sandwiches showed impaired blood flow in their forearms two hours after the greasy morning meal. Thats because their vessels were less able to dilate (widen) and deliver oxygenated blood to the heart.
While the effects from a single meal were temporary, over time such arterial changes could set the stage for a heart attack or stroke, the researchers report. They used a test called velocity time integral that measures how much blood flow can increase after a brief interruption (compressing the arm with a blood pressure cuff). The higher the velocity, the happier the blood vessels are.
While one cheesy sandwich isnt going to do lasting damage, the researchers say that their results highlight the importance of limiting fat, cholesterol, calories, and salt to prevent heart attacks and strokes. A junk-food diet has also been linked to increased risk for dementia, a memory-robbing disorder that has been called type 3 diabetes,

Whats the Worst Breakfast of All?
Whether youre looking to slim down, build muscle, train for a marathon, or just protect your health, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. And a fast-food morning meal isnotthe worse choice. Instead, the unhealthiest option is not eating a morning meal at all.
Not only do people who skip their morning mealor begin the day with only a cup of coffeehave less energy, worse moods, and poorer memory those who eat breakfast, studies show, but they also face some serious health risks. First of all, theyre up to 450 percent more likely to become obese, which in turn boosts risk for a wide range of ailments, including cardiovascular diseasethe leading killer of Americansgout, joint problems, and even some forms of cancer.
(click green)A 2012 study(Ref. article #5)published inAmerican Journal of Clinical Nutritionalso reports that people who regularly skip breakfast have a 21 percent higher risk for type 2 diabetes. The researchers tracked about 29,000 men for 16 years and found that the increased risk remained even when body mass index was into account. Scientists suspect that a morning meal helps keep blood sugar levels stable during the day.
Whats the Healthiest Breakfast? .The right breakfast not only reduces risk for overeating later in the day, but also revs up metabolism, fuels your body and brain, and helps you maintain a healthy weight. For example, 80 percent of participants in the ongoing National Weight Control Registry study (which tracks more than 4,000 people who have dropped 30 or more pounds and kept them off for a year or longer) eat breakfast regularly.
Nutritionists advise including both lean protein and fiber in your morning meal, such as whole-grain unsweetened or low-sugar cereal mixed with non-fat yogurt, low-fat milk, or soy milk and topped with fresh fruit. Researchers at University of Texas at El Paso report that eating a filling breakfast helps people consume an average of 100 fewer calories per day, enough to add up to ten-pound weight loss over a year.
The Breakfast Food that Fights Belly Fat
Another study linked having whole-grain cereal for breakfast with reduced levels of cortisol, a stress hormone linked to both weight gainanda tendency to accumulate belly fat. A large waistline is the leading warning sign of metabolic syndrome, which quintuple risks for type 2 diabetes and triple it for heart attack.
(click green)As reported recently(Ref. article #6), 95 percent of Americans dont eat the recommended three ounces of whole grains a day, which you can get from a slice of whole-wheat bread, a 6-inch whole-grain corn tortilla, or a serving of cereal. The health benefits of whole grain include:
Longer life. A high-fiber diet can cut risk of death from cardiovascular causes by nearly 60 percent, according to a recent nine-year (click green)study(Ref. article #7)of nearly 400,000 people ages 50 and older.A healthier heart.Soluble fiber in oatmeal and out bran reduces LDL bad, cholesterol and total cholesterol.Weight loss.Whole grains digest more slowly than refined grains, which keeps blood sugar levels stable rather than stimulating insulin.(Click green)Foods that Boost Your Immune System(Ref. article #8)

Food Good for You - summer - winter
Nowadays, you can eat pretty much any fruit or vegetable you want, all year long. But should you? During the summer and fall, farmer's markets are brimming with local, organic food that was harvested within 24 hours and is usually at the peak of its freshness, flavor, and nutritional content. In the winter and early spring, however, you often have to rely on out-of-season produce that's traveled an average of 1,300 miles to get from commercial farms to your dinner table. The process is not only bad for the planet, but it also means you wind up with bland produce that's mealy and low on nutrients.
While some out-of-season eating is inevitable, there are certain fruits and vegetables you're better off buying frozen. Frozen produce, like fresh produce, has usually traveled long distances to get to your plate, but it at least was picked at the height of freshness and, studies have found, sometimes has a higher nutrient content than fresh produce (just watch for added salt, added to many frozen veggies).

Study finds that just 1 high-fat meal can affect your heart health.
Eat a fast-food (read: "bad-food") breakfast sandwich and your body will be feeling the ill effects well before lunch now that's fast food!
High-fat diets are associated with developing atherosclerosis (= narrowing of the arteries) over a lifetime. But how quickly can damage start?
Just one day of eating a fat-laden fast-foodbreakfast sandwich processed cheese and meat on a bun and "your blood vessels become unhappy," says Heart and Stroke Foundation researcher Dr. Todd Anderson, director of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta and head of cardiac science at the University of Calgary.
Atherosclerosis (= narrowing the arteries) can eventually lead to serious problems including heart disease, stroke or even death.
Delegates at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress heard today about a study at Dr. Anderson's lab, led by student researcher Vincent Lee. The key ingredients: breakfast sandwiches and a group of healthy, non-smoking university students.
Fats can build up in your arteries over decades. One important gauge of how "happy" your arteries feel is how much blood flow can increase in your arm in response to its brief interruption measured as VTI (velocity time integral). You can measure VTI with doppler ultrasound at rest and then after a blood pressure cuff been inflated.
"VTI tells us how much blood flow you can you get in your arm," says Dr. Anderson. The higher the better, which means the small vessels can dilate to capacity, and the blood vessel hormones are working well.
So what would happen to the university students after starting their day with a breakfast of fat champions?
The objective of this study was to assess the acute effects of just one high-fat meal on microvascular function, an indicator of overall vascular (blood vessel) health.
The students were studied twice, once on a day they had no breakfast, and once on a day when they consumed two commercially available breakfast sandwiches, total of 900 calories and 50 g of fat. Two hours after eating the sandwiches, their VTI had decreased by 15-20 per cent, reports Dr. Anderson.
From just one isolated meal, the results are temporary. But the study shows that such a high-fat offering can do more harm, and do it more quickly, than people might think.
"I won't say don't ever have a breakfast sandwich," says Dr. Anderson. But enough of a diet like that, and you can see how you can build up fat in the walls of your arteries.
Dr. Anderson is also co-chair of the group that updated the Canadian Lipid Guidelines (on managing and treating high blood cholesterol), presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress.
"This study reminds us that our behaviours are the backbone of preventing heart disease," says Heart and Stroke Foundation spokesperson Dr. Beth Abramson.
"Remember that whether you eat at home or go to a restaurant, you're still in charge of what you eat. So consider all the choices, and try to cut down on saturated and trans fats, calories and sodium. That's one of the keys to decrease your risk of heart disease and stroke."

Warning Signs of Heart Attack
Recognizing symptoms of heart problems can save your life.
Published 2010
Not All Heart Attacks are Alike
Did you know you can have a heart attack and not feel any chest pains? Heart failure and heart disease dont show the same signs for everyone, especially women. A heart attackmedically known asmyocardial infarctionhappens when a blood clot blocks flow of blood to the heart.
There are many things that can contribute to a heart attack, including age, heredity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, poor diet, alcohol consumption, stress, and physical inactivity.
To recognize a potential heart attack as soon as possible, learn importantsigns of heart distresson the next slides.
Fatigue Shortness of Breath
Exhaustion and shortness of breath are two ways your body tells you it needs rest, but it can also be a sign of heart trouble as a response to the extra stress on your heart. If you often feel tired or exhausted for no reason, it could be a sign that something is wrong.
Fatigue and shortness of breath are more common in women and may begin months before a heart attack.
SweatingDay Night
Sweating more than usualespecially if you arent exercising or being activecould be an early warning sign of heart problems. Pumping blood through clogged arteries takes more effort from your heart, so your body will sweat more to try to keep your body temperature down during the extra exertion. If you experience cold sweats or clammy skin, then you should consult your doctor.
Night sweats are also a common symptom for women experiencing heart troubles.
Indigestion, Nausea, Vomiting
Often people begin experiencing mild indigestion and other gastrointestinal problems before a heart attack. Because heart attacks usually occur in older people who typically have more indigestion problems, these symptoms often get dismissed as heartburn or another food-related complication.
If you normally have an iron stomach, indigestion or heart burn could be signaling that something else is going on.
Chest Pain, Pressure, Discomfort
While chest pains do not occur in every heart attack, they are the most recognizable symptom for good reason. Chest tightness and discomfort are common sign of a heart attack. People have described the sensation as that of an elephant standing on their chest. If you experience chest pains or tightness, you or someone around you should call 911 immediately.
Other Pains Throughout the Body
Pain and tightness can also radiate in other areas of the body. Most people associate a heart attack with pain working its way down the left arm. That can happen, but pain can also appear in other locations, including:
upper abdomenshoulderbackthroatteeth or jaw
During a Heart Attack
If you think you are having a heart attack, you or someone nearby should call 911 immediately. If youve been prescribed heart medication and experience heart troubles, follow your doctors instructions. Even something as simple as taking aspirin can prevent the clot from becoming worse. If treatment of the blockage can be administered within a couple of hours of the onset of symptoms, the risk of severe damage to the heart is lowered.

The New Junk Food DangerDementia?
Not only does junk food make you fat, but it could cause dementia. New research shows that our calorie-laden diet boosts risk for dementia, a memory-robbing disorder some experts now call type 3 diabetes.
Americans are literally eating a diabetes diet thats very toxic to the brain and other vital organs, says Dr. Joel Zonszein, medical director of the diabetes clinic at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. And the one of the most terrible complicationsbrain damageis occurring in younger and younger patients.
In fact,a shocking new studyreports that teenagers who eat a diet thats high in fat and calories already show accelerated cognitive decline. The researchers blame rising rates of dementia on our increasingly unhealthy eating habits and couch potato lifestyle. (click green - study and apply the info - click green :a shocking new study)
The Insulin ConnectionWhile its long been known that type 2 diabetics are at higher risk for memory loss, another new studyfound that damage to key brain areas involved in memory and cognitive skills starts when blood sugar hits the high end of the normal range, even when other risk factors, such as smoking, high blood pressure, and alcohol consumption are taken into account.
The two studies reveal the hazards of a pre-diabetic condition called insulin resistance (IR), which tends to strike people who have a large waistline (even if their weight is normal), eat a poor diet, and spend long hours sitting in front of a computer (or the TV), says Dr. Zonszein.
7 Tips for Managing Diabetes
Link to Alzheimers DiseaseAnother new studyfound that both IR and diabetes contribute to formation of a type of brain plaque linked to Alzheimers disease, the memory-stealing disease that affects 5.4 million Americans.
In the August 25 issue ofNeurology,Japanese scientists wrote, adequate control of diabetes might contribute to a strategy for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease. Several clinical trials are now testing the effects of medication to improve insulin sensitivity in older people with cognitive impairment to see if this approach helps protect the brain.
The 25 Best Alheimer's Blogs of 2012
Fire in the ArteriesWhats the link between a poor diet and dementia? Junk food contributes to both central adiposity and chronic inflammation that damages small and large blood vessels that supply the brain, says Dr. Zonszein. Thats dangerous, since microvessel disease is the leading cause of dementia.
Although people with big bellies have lots of fat cells, adds Dr. Zonszein, their cells are very inefficient in the metabolic process (converting food into energy to power the body). As a result, fat is stored in places it shouldnt be, such as the liver and heart, and rising levels of blood sugar start to injure the brain. In addition, people with IR have lower levels of HDL, the good cholesterol that helps keep the heart and brain healthy.
A Dangerous Gang of Metabolic VillainsWere now seeing diabetic patients as young as 50 with significant brain damageand the new research is telling us that people with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome are at much higher risk for dementia than was previously believed, notes Dr. Zonszein.
About 50 million Americans, many of whom are undiagnosed, havemetabolic syndrome--a gang of five cardiometabolic thugs that quintuple a person's risk for type 2 diabetes and triple it for heart attack. By definition, everyone with metabolic syndrome has insulin resistance. If you have three of more of the following disorders, you have metabolic syndrome:
A large waistline (above 40 inches for a man or 35 inches for a woman). This also is called "an apple shape."High triglycerides: a level of this blood fat thats above 150 mg/dLLow HDL (less than 50 mg/dL for women and less than 40 mg/dL for men). HDL is the good cholesterol that keeps the heart and brain healthy. In fact, some research indicates that HDL is the best food for the brain.High blood pressure: 130/85 mmHg or higher (or youre on blood pressure medicine).High fasting blood sugar: 100 mg/dL or above (or you're on medicine to treat high blood sugar). How to Protect Your BrainThe good news is that the right diet, regular exerciseand keeping your weight downdramatically reduce risk for metabolic syndrome and diabetes, which in turn helps lower risk for dementia.
Most people with insulin resistance graze all day on high-calorie foods, says Dr. Zonszein. What they should do is eat three heart-healthy, low-fat meals a day with colorful fruits and vegetables, high-fiber whole grains, and lean protein, such as fish or chicken, on their plate.
Also limitor better still, avoidsweet drinks, including fruit juice and sports drinks.A recent studyshows that high-fructose sweeteners, in particular, may be driving the development of brain-harming microvessel disease.
This sweetener, ubiquitous in processed foods, appears to boost levels of a cell-damaging toxin called uric acid, the researchers report, magnifying risk for vascular dementia, chronic kidney disease, stroke, and heart disease.

Symptoms of Alzheimers Disease
Learn the early signs of this progressive brain disease.
SlideShow (slide capability may have expired - however, the same information is in print below)
Alzheimer's Disease Symptoms
Alzheimers diseaseis the most common form of dementiacharacterized by the loss of brain function that affects memory, behavior, decision-making, personality, and language. Early-onset Alzheimers can affect people younger than 60, while late-onset Alzheimers affects those older than 60. Diagnosing Alzheimer's is a challenge, so doctors use outward signs to make a diagnosis.
Click through the slideshow to learn the common symptoms of Alzheimers.
Memory Loss
Memory loss is one of the most common sign of Alzheimers disease. It is most evident when a person forgets recently learned information, such as a being unable to recall a persons name moments after meeting them. This problem can manifest as repeatedly asking the same question or forgetting important dates, such as birthdays or anniversaries.
While diminished memory function is often associated with older age, Alzheimers symptoms become progressively worse.
Misplacing Items
Another common sign of Alzheimers is a person becoming more forgetful of where they place items. This isnt simply forgetting where you left the car keys, because that can happen to anyone. This could mean putting things in odd placescar keys in the blenderor being unable to retrace steps to find what theyve lost. Its most apparent in someone who is normally neat and organized.
Difficulty Concentrating Planning
Alzheimers can also affect a persons ability to follow a plan, whether it be cooking a recipe, assembling a simple item, or anything else involving directions. This may cause them to be slower or abandon the project entirely. Also, things involving numbers, such as handling personal finances, may become increasingly difficult and confusing. Minor errors can be expected with old age, but Alzheimers can significantly affect a person's ability to do the things they've been doing effectively their whole lives.
Getting Lost
As Alzheimers affects a persons memory, they can become disorientated in familiar places. While anyone can get lost in a new town or unfamiliar neighborhood, a person with Alzheimers can become lost in situations such as coming home from the grocery store, even if theyve taken the same route for 50 years. This symptom can also manifest as forgetting the rules to familiar game or forgetting how to accomplish daily tasks.
Difficulty with Time or Place
While rare in the early stages, people with Alzheimers can forget where they are or how they got there. This can even include home.
Trouble with time is more common. This can include forgetting important dates or thinking something happened recently when it actually happened months or even years before. A person with Alzheimer's might forget what season it is and not dress appropriately for the weather.
Language Problems
Anyone can struggle to find the right words for what theyre thinking. However, people with Alzheimers might go beyond simply having trouble finding words and may start using odd expressions. The Alzheimers Association offers the example of calling a watch a hand clock. Also, a person with Alzheimers can have difficulty in conversations, such as stopping mid-sentence and being unaware of where to begin again.
Changes in Personality Mood
Personality and mood changes are often the first signs of Alzheimer's that people notice in loved ones. These symptoms can include unfounded distrust in family members, paranoia, anxiety, or depression. It is most evident when generally good-natured people become angry, spiteful, or depressed without any other reason. They can also become easily upset in situations outside their typical routine or environment.
Severe Symptoms
As Alzheimers progresses without treatment, symptoms can become more severe. They may include:
inability to recognize loved onesforgetting details of their own lifewithdrawal from social contactpoor judgment to the point of self-endangermentdelusions or hallucinationsspeaking in confusing sentences
While there is no cure for Alzheimers, there are (click)several treatments that can slow its progression. There are also treatments to help manage symptoms, such as loss of sleep and agitation.

Type 2 diabetes Comprehensive overview covers symptoms, treatment, prevention of this often weight-related condition....Definition. By Mayo Clinic staff...
Symptoms-Causes-Treatments and drugs-Lifestyle and home remedies
Objective:The objective of this study was to prospectively examine associations between breakfast omission, eating frequency, snacking, and T2D risk in men.
Design:Eating patterns were assessed in 1992 in a cohort of 29,206 US men in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study who were free of T2D, cardiovascular disease, and cancer and were followed for 16 y. We used Cox proportional hazards analysis to evaluate associations with incident T2D.
Results:We documented 1944 T2D cases during follow-up. After adjustment for known risk factors for T2D, including BMI, men who skipped breakfast had 21% higher risk of T2D than did men who consumed breakfast (RR: 1.21; 95% CI: 1.07, 1.35). Compared with men who ate 3 times/d, men who ate 12 times/d had a higher risk of T2D (RR: 1.25; 95% CI: 1.08, 1.45). These findings persisted after stratification by BMI or diet quality. Additional snacks beyond the 3 main meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) were associated with increased T2D risk, but these associations were attenuated after adjustment for BMI.
Conclusions:Breakfast omission was associated with an increased risk of T2D in men even after adjustment for BMI. A direct association between snacking between meals and T2D risk was mediated by this research.

The Food That Can Save Your Life
Eating three servings of whole grains daily can dramatically reduce the risk of certain kinds of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Yet 95 percent of Americans do not eat enough whole grains and miss out on the well-documented health benefits.
The USDAs MyPlate Dietary guidelines have included whole grains as a food to increase, but doing so doesnt have to be difficult. Even adding fun grains such as popcorn, the surprising whole grain, can be surprisingly beneficial. In fact, new research shows thatpopcorn packs more antioxidant powerthan a days worth of fruit and vegetables, in part because it has a much lower water content.
Foods that Boost Your Immune System
Three Ounces A Day Protects Against Chronic Diseases
The recommended amount of whole grains is just three servings, or three ounces, per day. A single serving could include half a cup of brown rice, a one-ounce slice of whole wheat bread, or a 6-inch whole grain corn tortilla. But benefits have been found foreven lessthan the recommended amount of grain.
Longer life.Eating a diet rich in fiber, as found in whole grains, dramatically reduces the risk of death from cardiovascular causes, according to a newstudyof nearly 400,000 people ages 50 and older. Reserchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and American Association of Retired People (AARP). In fact, men who ate the most fiber were 56 percent less likely to die from cardiovascular disease, infectious disease and respiratory disorders during the nine-year, compared to those who ate the least fiber. A high-fiber diet cut womens risk of mortality from those causes by 59 percent..Lower risk of cardiovascular events.Ameta-analysis of seven studiesshowed that greater whole grain intake trimmed the risk of heart disease, stroke or cardiovascular disease by 21 percent. Furthermore, soluble fiber in oatmeal and out bran can reduce LDL, or bad, cholesterol as well as total cholesterol.Protection against cancer. The World Cancer Research Fund and American Institute for Cancer Research estimated that more than 64,000 cases of cancer would be prevented if we ate more fiber, such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and less red or processed meat. The researchers also reported that this type of diet, combined with a healthy lifestyle, could prevent about 45 percent of cases of colon cancer.Trimming diabetes risk.Replacing just a third of a serving of white rice per day with brown rice can cut your risk of type 2 diabetes by 16 percent and switching from refined grains to low grains in general lowers diabetes risk by 36 percent, research published inArchives of Internal Medicineindicates.Weight loss.Whole grains digest more slowly than refined grains, which keeps blood sugar levels stable rather than stimulating insulin. Lowering the amount of carbs in your diet from 60 percent to 40 percent and sticking to slow-digesting foods (which includes whole grains, legumes and non-starchy vegetables),burns more caloriesthan following a traditional low-fat diet. Another study found that replacing refined grains with whole grains resulted in greater fat lossand reduced risk for heart disease.Stroke prevention.Eating whole grains cuts womens risk for ischemic stroke by 30 to 40 percent, according toa studypublished inJournal of the American Medical Association. The study looked at 75,521 women, ages of 38 to 63. Replacing refined grains with whole grains by even one serving a day may have significant benefits in reducing the risk of ischemic stroke, the study authors wrote.Whole grains are loaded with phytochemicals, antioxidants, and minerals such as magnesium, selenium, zinc, copper and manganese. They also contain B vitamins, magnesium, and ironplus soluble fiber, which helps reduce cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure.
7 Tips to Manage Your Chronic Pain
What are whole grains, exactly?
Whole grains are cereal grains that consist of the intact, ground, cracked or flaked kernel, which includes the bran, germ and the innermost part of the kernel (the endosperm), the U.S. Food and Drug Administrationexplains. Contrast this with refined grains, where the bran, germ and endosperm are mechanically removedalong with many vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber.
Whole grains include whole wheat, oats and oatmeal, corn and cornmeal, brown rice, wild rice, amaranth, barley, buckwheat, millet, quinoa, rye, sorghum, teff, and triticale. Refined grains include white rice, white bread, instant oatmeal, and baked goods made with white flour.
Avoid deceptive labels!
Before you buy a loaf of bread, make sure it says 100 percent whole grain or 100 percent whole wheat or even whole wheat. Labels reading wheat flour or 100% wheat include refined grains. Organic doesnt necessarily mean an item contains whole grains. Multigrain or stone ground breads are also not necessarily whole grains.
When reading labels, look for those listing the whole grain as the first ingredient.
The Whole Grain Council has twowhole grain stampson food packages to make buying whole grains easier. The basic stamp simply says Whole Grain, which means that the product has 8g or more of whole grain per serving. The 100 percent stamp assures that the product has at least 16g of whole grains per serving, and that all of its ingredients are whole grains. Each stamp also explains how many grams of whole grain ingredients are in each serving of the product.

Dietary fiber is defined as the edible parts of plants or analogous carbohydrates that are resistant to digestion and absorption in the human small intestine, with complete or partial fermentation in the large intestine.1It has been hypothesized to lower the risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, some cancers, obesity, and premature death because it is known to (1) improve laxation by increasing bulk and reducing transit time of feces through the bowel; (2) increase excretion of bile acid, estrogen, and fecal procarcinogens and carcinogens by binding to them; (3) lower serum cholesterol levels; (4) slow glucose absorption and improve insulin sensitivity; (5) lower blood pressure; (6) promote weight loss; (7) inhibit lipid peroxidation; and (8) have anti-inflammatory properties.2-3
A limited number of observational studies have examined the effect of dietary fiber on mortality and reported inconsistent results. The Scottish Heart Health study (N=11629; total No. of deaths, 591)4found that dietary fiber intake was inversely related to total mortality in men but not in women. The Zutphen Study in the Netherlands,5which followed up 1373 men for 40 years, found a 9% lowered risk of total death per 10 g/d of dietary fiber intake. Another study, conducted in an Israeli population,6also observed a 43% lowered risk of total death in persons consuming 25 g/d or more of dietary fiber compared with those with less than 25 g/d of dietary fiber intake. On the other hand, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey I Epidemiologic Follow-up Study (N=9776; total No. of deaths, 2632)7found no association between dietary fiber intake and total mortality. However, it assessed dietary fiber intake using a single 24-hour dietary recall, which is unlikely to reflect usual dietary intake.
Studies of dietary fiber in relation to cause-specific death, except death from cardiovascular disease (CVD), are sparse. Furthermore, previous studies examining the association between dietary fiber and mortality were limited by small sample sizes, narrow ranges of dietary fiber intakes, and inadequate control for confounding, leading to decreased power, intakes without the necessary ranges to observe associations, and residual confounding. Therefore, we investigated dietary fiber intake in relation to total and cause-specific mortality in a large prospective cohort of men and women in which more than 30000 deaths occurred during an average of 9 years of follow-up and a wide range of dietary intakes.

STUDY POPULATION
The NIH (National Institutes of Health)-AARP Diet and Health Study was initiated when 567169 AARP members aged 50 to 71 years from 6 US states (California, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania) and 2 metropolitan areas (Atlanta, Georgia, and Detroit, Michigan) responded to a mailed questionnaire in 1995 and 1996. Details of the NIH-AARP Study have been described previously.8Among participants who returned the questionnaires with satisfactory dietary data, we excluded individuals who indicated that they were proxies for the intended respondent (n=1265) as well as those who had any prevalent cancer except nonmelanoma skin cancer (n=23954), heart disease (n=68664), stroke (n=6434), diabetes (n=30881), or self-reported end-stage renal disease at baseline (n=371). Furthermore, we excluded individuals who reported extreme intakes (2 times the interquartile ranges of Box-Cox log transformed intake) of total energy (n=1609) and dietary fiber (n=891). After exclusions, the analytic cohort comprised 219123 men and 168999 women. The NIH-AARP Diet and Health study was approved by the Special Studies Institutional Review Board of the US National Cancer Institute.
DIET AND RISK FACTOR ASSESSMENT
At baseline, dietary intakes were assessed with a self-administered 124-item food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ), which was an early version of the Diet History Questionnaire developed at the National Cancer Institute.9Participants were asked to report their usual frequency of intake and portion size over the past 12 months using 10 predefined frequency categories ranging from never to 6+ times per day for beverages and from never to 2+ times per day for solid foods as well as 3 categories of portion size. The food items, portion sizes, and nutrient database were constructed using the US Department of Agriculture's 1994-1996 Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals.10The nutrient database for dietary fiber was informed by the Association of Official Analytical Chemist method.11
The FFQ used in the study was calibrated using 2 nonconsecutive 24-hour dietary recalls in 1953 NIH-AARP study participants.12The energy-adjusted correlation coefficients of dietary fiber intake between an FFQ and 24-hour recalls were 0.72 in men and 0.66 in women. We also collected demographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle information, including history of smoking, physical activity, family history of cancers, menopausal hormone therapy use in women, and some medical conditions at baseline.
MORTALITY ASCERTAINMENT
We ascertained vital status through a periodic linkage of the cohort to the Social Security Administration Death Master File and follow-up searches of the National Death Index Plus for participants who matched to the Social Security Administration Death Master File, cancer registry linkage, questionnaire responses, and responses to other mailings. We used theInternational Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revisionand theInternational Statistical Classification of Diseases, 10th Revisionto define death due to CVDs (I00-I78); cancer (C00-C97); infectious diseases (eg, tuberculosis, septicemia, and other infectious and parasitic diseases [A00-B99, excluding B20-B24]); respiratory diseases (eg, pneumonia, influenza, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, and allied conditions [J10-J18, J40-J47]); accidents (eg, accident, suicide, and homicide [V01-X59]); and other causes (all other causes except those previously mentioned).
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS
We used the Cox proportional hazards model13to estimate relative risks (RRs) and 2-sided 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using the SAS PROC PHREG procedure (Version 9.1; SAS Institute Inc, Cary, North Carolina). Person-years of follow-up were calculated from the date of the baseline questionnaire until the date of death or the end of follow-up (December 31, 2005), whichever occurred first. We evaluated the proportional hazards assumption and confirmed it by modeling interaction terms consisting of the cross product of time and dietary fiber intake.
Although there was no statistically significant interaction by sex (P=.17), we performed sex-specific analysis and reported the results by sex. Intakes of dietary fiber and fiber from food sources were adjusted for total energy intake using the residual method14and were categorized into quintiles. We estimated the RRs for quintiles of fiber intake as well as continuous intake. To test linear trends across quintiles of fiber intake, we created a continuous variable based on the median value in each quintile and regressed the risk of death on this variable.
We presented an age-adjusted model and 2 multivariate models. Multivariate model 1 was adjusted for age, smoking status, smoking dose, and time since quitting smoking because smoking was a strong confounder. In multivariate model 2, we also adjusted for race/ethnicity, education, marital status, self-rated health status, body mass index (BMI), physical activity, menopausal hormone therapy use in women, and intakes of alcohol, red meat, fruits, vegetables, and total energy. Furthermore, we adjusted for aspirin use, high cholesterol level, and high blood pressure and found that the results did not change. For missing data in each covariate, we created an indicator variable reflecting missing data. Generally, missingness was less than 5%. We tested whether the association between dietary fiber intake and mortality was modified by smoking and BMI. The test for interaction was performed using the likelihood ratio test entering a cross product term of both dietary fiber intake and BMI as continuous variables and smoking as an ordinal variable. In analyses of fiber from food sources, fiber intake from grains, fruits, vegetables, and beans was mutually adjusted.
Also, we carried out measurement error corrections using a regression calibration method15-16and a SAS macro17for an age-adjusted model and a parsimonious multivariate model that adjusted for age, smoking, and total energy intake. The RRs for dietary fiber intake were corrected for measurement error by regressing intake from the reference dietary assessment method2 nonconsecutive 24-hour recallson intake from the FFQ.
RESULTS
METHODS|RESULTS|COMMENT|AUTHOR INFORMATION|REFERENCES
During an average of 9 years of follow-up, we identified 20126 deaths in men and 11330 deaths in women. There were 5248 CVD deaths and 8244 cancer deaths in men and 2417 CVD deaths and 4927 cancer deaths in women. Age-adjusted total, CVD, and cancer mortality rates per 100000 person-years were 991, 258, and 406, respectively, in men and 716, 153, and 311, respectively, in women. Energy-adjusted dietary fiber intake ranged from 13 (10th percentile) to 29 (90th percentile) g/d in men and from 11 to 26 g/d in women. The ranges (10th-90th percentiles) of energy-adjusted fiber intake from grains, fruits, vegetables, and beans were 3.3 to 11.1, 0.9 to 8.0, 3.1 to 10.6, and 0.6 to 4.8 g/d, respectively, in men and 2.5 to 8.8, 1.0 to 8.1, 2.9 to 10.3, and 0.3 to 3.4 g/d, respectively, in women. Compared with individuals in the lowest quintile of dietary fiber intake, persons in the highest quintile were more likely to have higher education, to have self-rated their health as being very good/excellent, to have a lower BMI, to be physically active, and to use menopausal hormone therapy in women but were less likely to smoke, to drink alcohol, and to consume red meat (Table 1).
Table 1.Selected Characteristics of Study Participants by Categories of Dietary Fiber IntakeView Large|Save Table|Download Slide (.ppt)
We found that dietary fiber intake was significantly inversely associated with risk of total death in both men and women (Table 2). Comparing the lowest quintile of dietary fiber intake, both men and women in the highest quintile had a 22% lower risk of total death (multivariate RRQ5 vs Q1, 0.78 [95% CI, 0.73-0.82] in men and 0.78 [95% CI, 0.73-0.85] in women). For an increment of 10 g/d of dietary fiber intake, the multivariate RR for total death was 0.88 (95% CI, 0.86-0.91) in men and 0.85 (95% CI, 0.82-0.89) in women. We also performed the propensity score analysis to better control for confounding and found that the results did not materially change. Comparing the highest quintile of dietary fiber intake with the lowest, the RR for total death was 0.82 (95% CI, 0.80-0.84) in men and 0.84 (95% CI, 0.81-0.87) in women. Because smoking was a strong confounder in our analysis, we performed analyses stratified by smoking status. The inverse association between dietary fiber intake and total death remained significant in never smokers in both men (multivariate RRQ5 vs Q1, 0.81 [95% CI, 0.71-0.93;Pfor trend, .001]) and women (multivariate RRQ5 vs Q1, 0.83 [95% CI, 0.72-0.97;Pfor trend, .05]). Dietary fiber intake was also significantly inversely related to total death in former and current smokers in both men and women. A significant association with dietary fiber intake was also observed across categories of BMI. Furthermore, we examined the association stratified by age at baseline (60 and 60 years), self-rated health condition (excellent/good and fair/poor), and menopausal hormone therapy use in women (never and ever) and observed a consistently inverse association between dietary fiber intake and total death across all categories examined (data not shown).
Table 2.Total Death for Quintiles of Dietary Fiber Intake in Men and WomenView Large|Save Table|Download Slide (.ppt)
Correction for measurement error in the assessments of dietary fiber intake strengthened the association with total mortality. For an increment of 10 g/d of dietary fiber intake, the RR of total death was 0.86 (95% CI, 0.84-0.88) in men and 0.83 (95% CI, 0.80-0.86) in women after adjustment for age, smoking, and total energy intake but before measurement error correction. After measurement error was corrected for, the RR was 0.76 (95% CI, 0.72-0.80) in men and 0.71 (95% CI, 0.66-0.76) in women.
Dietary fiber intake was also inversely related to risk of death from CVD, cancer, and infectious and respiratory diseases in men (Table 3). Comparing the highest with the lowest quintile of dietary fiber intake, men had a 24% to 56% lower risk of death from CVD, cancer, and infectious and respiratory diseases. Comparable findings in women were a 34% to 59% lower risk of death from CVD and infectious and respiratory diseases and no association with cancer death (Table 4). For every 10-g/d increase in dietary fiber intake, the multivariate RRs for death from CVD, cancer, and infectious and respiratory diseases were 0.88 (95% CI, 0.86-0.91), 0.92 (95% CI, 0.88-0.96), 0.66 (95% CI, 0.52-0.84), and 0.82 (95% CI, 0.74-0.93), respectively, in men and 0.76 (95% CI, 0.69-0.84), 0.97 (95% CI, 0.91-1.04), 0.61 (95% CI, 0.44-0.85), and 0.66 (95% CI, 0.56-0.78), respectively, in women.

We further adjusted for aspirin use, high blood pressure, and cholesterolemia and found no appreciable differences. We also analyzed the data by excluding death that occurred during the first 2 years of follow-up and the first 4 years of follow-up and found no change in results. When we restricted analyses to never smokers, the multivariate RRsQ5 vs Q1of death from CVD, cancer, and infectious and respiratory diseases in men were 0.95 (95% CI, 0.74-1.21;Pfor trend, .81 [1134 deaths]), 0.82 (95% CI, 0.65-1.03;Pfor trend, .009 [1405 deaths]), 0.22 (95% CI, 0.08-0.61;Pfor trend, .002 [70 deaths]), and 0.60 (95% CI, 0.25-1.44;Pfor trend, .20 [90 deaths]), respectively. In female never smokers, the multivariate RRsQ5 vs Q1were 0.69 (95% CI, 0.50-0.95;Pfor trend, .02 [729 deaths]) for CVD death, 1.14 (95% CI, 0.90-1.44;Pfor trend, .11 [1342 deaths]) for cancer death, 0.28 (95% CI, 0.10-0.80;Pfor trend, .02 [70 deaths]) for infectious disease death, and 0.50 (95% CI, 0.22-1.14;Pfor trend, .07 [103 deaths]) for respiratory disease death.
Fiber intakes from food sources such as grains, fruits, vegetables, and beans were also examined (Figure). We found that dietary fiber from grains was significantly inversely related to the risk of total, CVD, cancer, and respiratory disease deaths in both men and women. Comparing the highest with the lowest intake of fiber from grains, men had a 23% lower risk of total death (multivariate RR, 0.77 [95% CI, 0.73-0.81]) and women had a 19% lower risk of total death (multivariate RR, 0.81 [95% CI, 0.76-0.86]). Fiber from vegetables and beans was also weakly associated with a lower risk of total death in both men and women. However, fiber from fruits was not related to total and cause-specific deaths in men and women.

METHODS|RESULTS|COMMENT|AUTHOR INFORMATION|REFERENCES
In this large prospective cohort study, we found that dietary fiber intake was significantly inversely associated with the risk of total death and death from CVD, infectious diseases, and respiratory diseases in both men and women. Dietary fiber intake was also related to a lower risk of death from cancer in men but not in women. Among specific sources of dietary fiber, fiber from grains showed the most consistent inverse association with risk of total and cause-specific deaths.
Three of 4 previous studies that examined dietary fiber intake in relation to total mortality reported a 9% to 43% lowered risk of total death among persons with a higher consumption of dietary fiber in various populations.4-6Consistent with most of these studies, our study found a 22% lower risk of total death comparing the highest with the lowest quintile of intake in both men and women. Furthermore, the association was not modified by smoking status or BMI. The findings remained robust when we corrected for dietary intake measurement error using calibration study data; in fact, the association was even stronger with measurement error correction.
Dietary fiber intake in relation to CVD death has been studied in several studies,5,18-21consistently showing protection for CVD death, in agreement with our study. A pooled analysis of 10 prospective cohort studies estimated that the risk of CVD death decreased by about 19% (multivariate RR,0.81 [95% CI, 0.73-0.91]) per 10-g/d increment of dietary fiber intake.22This pooled study also found that fiber intake from both grains and fruits was associated with a lower risk of CVD death. Our findings were consistent for fiber intake from grains but not from fruits. Several plausible mechanisms, such as improving serum lipid profiles,23postprandial absorption and insulin resistance,24and lowering blood pressure,25have been suggested to underlie the beneficial effects of dietary fiber on CVD.
Studies of dietary fiber intake in relation to cause-specific death other than CVD are limited. The role of dietary fiber in the pathogenesis of cancer has long been debated. Despite plausible physiologic mechanisms, the association between dietary fiber and cancer has been inconsistent. The consensus report from the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research concluded that dietary fiber intake probably lowers the incidence of colorectal and esophageal cancer,26but little is known about dietary fiber intake in relation to cancer death. In our study, we observed an inverse association between dietary fiber intake and cancer death in men but not in women. The observed sex difference may, in part, be explained by the differences in leading organ sites for cancer death between men and women. Men have higher mortality rates of cancers of the head and neck, esophagus, liver, urinary bladder, and kidney than women. Considering data indicating that the risks of these cancers are influenced by several dietary factors, including grains, fruits, and vegetables,27our findings of the protective effect of dietary fiber on total cancer death may have been the result, in part, of the lowering mortality of these specific cancers in men. Nonetheless, we cannot rule out the possibility that our findings of different associations between dietary fiber intake and cancer death between men and women are due to chance. Future research might elucidate this finding.
Interestingly, our study found that dietary fiber intake, especially from grains, was inversely associated with the risk of death from infectious and respiratory diseases. Inflammation, a predominant pathphysiologic response in many infectious and respiratory diseases, has been suggested to contribute the progression of these diseases.28Studies have shown that dietary fiber has anti-inflammatory properties: dietary fiber intake was associated with lower levels of inflammation markers such as C-reactive protein, interleukin 6, and tumor necrosis factor receptor 2, which play roles in chronic inflammatory conditions.29-32The anti-inflammatory properties of dietary fiber could explain, in part, significant inverse associations of dietary fiber intake with infectious and respiratory diseases as well as with CVD death. The Iowa Women's Health Study33found that women consuming a large amount of whole grainsrich sources of fiber, mineral, and other phytochemicalshad a 34% lower risk of death from noncardiovascular, noncancer inflammatory diseases (RRQ5 vs Q1, 0.66 [95% CI,: 0.54-0.81;Pfor trend, .008]) and a 40% lower risk of death from respiratory system diseases (RRQ5 vs Q1, 0.60 [95% CI, 0.46-0.80;Pfor trend, .006]). A few other studies have also suggested that dietary fiber intake lowers the risk of inflammatory diseases such as duodenal ulcer and diverticular disease.34-35
Our study has several strengths. First, it is a large prospective cohort study in which diet was measured at baseline, thus decreasing the likelihood of recall bias. Also, our study has wide ranges of dietary fiber intake and a large number of deaths, providing good statistical power and sample size to examine the associations in never smokers and relationships with specific causes of death, such as infectious and respiratory diseases. Our findings of the beneficial effect of dietary fiber intake for lowering the risk of death from infectious and respiratory diseases are interesting but warrant further investigation. Second, we excluded persons who reported chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and end-stage renal disease at baseline. This may have minimized the attenuation of associations. Given the perception that dietary fiber is a healthy dietary constituent, persons who presumably are already at high risk of death may have been prone to biased reporting of dietary fiber intake, thus attenuating associations. Third, we extensively controlled for smoking and many other risk factors of mortality. Finally, we performed analyses in never smokers only to minimize residual confounding by smoking, the strongest confounder, and still observed consistently significant inverse associations.
Several potential limitations also need to be considered. We cannot rule out the possibility that dietary fiber intake is a marker of a healthy diet that is high in grains, fruits, and vegetablesfoods that are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicalsor that dietary fiber intake is a marker of a healthy lifestyle. Persons who consumed a large amount of dietary fiber may engage in other healthy behaviors that were incompletely assessed in the study. Therefore, our findings may in part due to residual confounding by healthy lifestyle. However, we found significant inverse associations even after controlling for all these factors in multivariate models. Also, inverse associations between dietary fiber intake and total and cause-specific deaths were observed in never smokers and in persons with a BMI of less than 25 (calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared). Measurement error is always an inherent limitation in self-reported dietary assessment. Nevertheless, our measurement error correction analyses strengthened our associations. This suggests that measurement errors in dietary fiber intake may have attenuated the true RRs, but the measurement errors were not substantial; therefore, we were able to detect an association in the study. We recognize, however, that the reference method24-hour recallsused in our measurement error correction may underestimate or overestimate true intake. Therefore, it is possible that substantial changes in risk estimates could occur if an objective marker of intake, which may be close to the true intake, is used in measurement error correction.
In conclusion, our study shows that dietary fiber may reduce the risk of premature death from all causes, especially from CVD and infectious and respiratory diseases. The current Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend choosing fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, and whole grains frequently and consuming 14 g/1000 calories of dietary fiber. A diet rich in dietary fiber from whole plant foods may provide significant health benefits.

Immune System Boosters
If you're looking for ways to prevent winter colds and the flu, your first step should be a visit to your local grocery store.
Feeding your body certain foods can help to keep your immune system running strong. Plan your meals to include the following 10 powerful immune system boosters (we've included lots of recipes that make it easy) and you'll increase your family's chances of fending off those winter bugs before they get anyone sick.
Citrus
Most people turn to vitamin C after they've caught a cold. But did you know it tops the charts of foods that keep your immune system running at 100%? Vitamin C helps increase the production of white blood cells, key to fighting infections. Because your body doesn't produce or store it, daily intake of vitamin C is essential for continued health. Almost all citrus fruits are high in vitamin C and with such a variety to choose from it's easy to add a squeeze of C to any meal.
Check out theTangerine Yogurt Sorbetor theBlushing Maidcocktail.
Red Bell Peppers
Vitamin C not only boosts immune systems but it helps maintain healthy skin, which is the frontline in our war on colds. Think citrus fruits have the most vitamin C of any fruit or vegetable? Think again. Ounce for ounce, red bell peppers have twice as much flu-fighting vitamin C, as well as being a rich source of beta carotenes.
Check outBell Pepper Farro Salad.
Broccoli
Broccoli is super-charged with an arsenal of vitamins and minerals ready to do battle with any germ or infection. Packed with vitamins A, C, and E, as well as numerous antioxidants, broccoli is one of the healthiest vegetables you can put on your table. The key to keeping its power intact is to cook it as little as possible, or better yet, not at all.
Check outWinter Rigatoni.
Garlic
Found in almost every cuisine around the world, garlic not only adds a little zing to foods, it's a must-have for your health. Early civilizations recognized its value for fighting infections and modern science has shown that garlic helps to lower cholesterol and prevent hardening of arteries. Its immune-boosting properties seem to come from a heavy concentration of sulphur-containing compounds, such as allicin.
Check outGarlic Mushrooms.
Ginger
Ginger is another ingredient many turn to after they've caught a cold. But like vitamin C, ginger can also help you prevent that cold from taking hold in the first place. While it's used in many sweet desserts, ginger packs some heat in the form of gingerol, a relative of capsaicin, which gives chili peppers their distinctive heat. Ginger may help decrease chronic pain and may possess cholesterol-lowering properties.
Check outQuick Ginger BeerandGreen Tea Granita.
Spinach
Spinach made our list not just because it's rich in vitamin C but because it's packed with numerous antioxidants and beta-carotene, which have been proven to increase the infection-fighting cells of our immune systems. Similar to broccoli, it is best cooked as little as possible so that its nutrients are retained.
Check outGinger Chicken Salad.
Yogurt
When selecting yogurt look for ones that have "live and active cultures" printed on the label. Recent studies suggest these cultures help stimulate your immune system to help fight diseases. Additional studies also suggest a link between low vitamin D levels and an increased risk of catching a cold, so select brands fortified with vitamin D.
Check outTangerine Yogurt SorbetandGinger Chicken Salad.
Almonds
When it comes to preventing and fighting off colds, vitamin E tends to take a backseat to the more commonly mentioned vitamin C, but vitamin E is also key to a healthy immune system. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning it requires the presence of fat to be absorbed properly. Nuts (especially almonds) are packed with vitamin E and a half cup serving provides nearly 100% of the daily recommended amount.
Check outRomesco Shrimp.
Turmeric
A key ingredient in many curries, this bright-yellow, bitter spice has been used for years as an anti-inflammatory in treating both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. High concentrations of curcumin, which gives turmeric its distinct color, have been shown to contain strong flu and cold fighting properties.
Check outAlmond Couscous.
Black Tea and Green Tea - Any Tea
Both green and black teas are packed with flavonoids, a type of antioxidant. Where green tea really shines is in its levels of epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, another powerful antioxidant. The fermentation process black tea goes through destroys a lot of the EGCG. Green tea, on the other hand, is steamed and not fermented, preserving that EGCG. If that wasn't enough, it's also a good source of the amino acid L-theanine, which aids in the production of germ-fighting compounds in your T-cells.

It is irresponsible to use words in a misleading manner in a topic of this importance
Secondly, it is making a wrong statement that prevention would not save money. Correct prevention is Healthy Lifestyle Correct Nutrition - with that applied most people will not get any serious sickness. Genetic sicknesses are in their own category - however, there is some evidence that, at least partially,
Healthy Lifestyle Correct Nutrition will positively affect also the negative genetics.
________________
Insight: Think preventive medicine will save money? Think again
Since about 75 percent ofhealthcarespending in the United States is for largely preventable chronic illnesses such as Type 2 diabetes andheart disease, providing morepreventive careshould cut costs.
If only.
In a report released on Tuesday, 1/29/1/13, the non-profit Trust for America's Health outlined a plan "to move from sick care to health care" by putting more resources into preventing chronic disease rather than treating it, as the current system does. There is a strong humanitarian justification for prevention, arguedTrust Executive Director Jeffrey Leviin an interview, since it reduces human suffering.
But the report also makes an economic argument for preventive care, highlighting the possibility of reducing healthcare spending -- which in 2011 reached $2.7 trillion, just shy of 18 percent of gross domestic product -- by billions of dollars. And that has health economists shaking their heads.
"Preventive care is more about the right thing to do" because it spares people the misery of illness, said economist Austin Frakt of Boston University. "But it's not plausible to think you can cut healthcare spending through preventive care. This is widely misunderstood."
A 2010 study in the journal Health Affairs, for instance, calculated that if 90 percent of the U.S. population used proven preventive services, more than do now, it would save only 0.2 percent of healthcare spending.
Some disease-prevention programs do produce net savings. Childhood immunizations, and probably some adult immunizations (such as for pneumonia and the flu), are cost-saving, found a 2009 analysis for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The vaccines are cheap, and large swaths of the population are vulnerable to the diseases they prevent. The cost of providing them to everyone is less than that of treating the illnesses they prevent.
Counseling adults about using baby aspirin to preventcardiovascular diseasealso produces net savings. The counseling is inexpensive, the aspirin even cheaper and the costs of heart disease, which strikes one in three U.S. adults, are enormous. Screening pregnant women for HIV produces net savings, too.
Those, however, are exceptions.
HIGH COSTS, NO BENEFITS
One big reason why preventive care does not save money, say health economists, is that some of the best-known forms don't actually improve someone's health.
These low- or no-benefit measures include annual physicals for healthy adults. A 2012 analysis of 14 large studies found they do not lower the risk of serious illness or premature death. But about one-third of U.S. adults get them, said Dr. Ateev Mehrota, a primary-care physician and healthcare analyst at RAND, for a cost of about $8 billion a year.
Similarly, some cancer screenings -- including for ovarian cancer and testicular cancer, and for prostate cancer via PSA tests -- produce essentially no health benefits, causing the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force to recommend against their routine use. The task force bases its recommendations on medical benefits alone, not costs.
The second reason preventive care brings so few cost savings is the large number of people who need to receive a particular preventive service in order to avert a single expensive illness.
"It seems counterintuitive: If you provide care to prevent all these expensive diseases, it should save money," saidPeter Neumann, an expert on health policy and professor of medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine. "But prevention itself costs money, and some preventive measures can be very expensive, especially if you give them to a lot of people who won't benefit."
If preventive care could be provided only to those who are going to get the illness, it would be more cost-effective. "But in the real world, the number needed to screen or to treat in order to prevent one case of illness can be huge," said BU's Frakt, who blogs at theincidentaleconomist.com.
Currently, many people who do not benefit from a preventive service receive it, paying something for nothing. Studies have calculated those numbers, which can be surprisingly high.
For instance, 217 high-risk smokers would have to undergo a CT lung scan for one to be spared death from lung cancer, according to a database of studies maintained by Dr. David Newman, an emergency physician at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. One hundred post-menopausal women who have had a bone fracture would have to take drugs called bisphosphonates in order for one to avoid a hip fracture.
By comparison, only 50 people with heart disease must be treated with aspirin for one to avoid a heart attack or stroke, making this a good buy.
The numbers of people who need to be treated for one to benefit are so high because so few will get the disease the preventive is meant to avert. It's like treating every house for termites, said Neumann, co-author of the Robert Wood Johnson report: The vast majority would never have gotten infested in the first place, so the thousands spent to avoid the infestation is money for nothing.
The failure of many preventive services to improve health, plus the large number of people who have to receive preventive care for one to be spared an illness he or she would otherwise get, limit the economic savings.
MAKING HEALTHCARE DOLLARS GO FURTHER
A better gauge of the value of preventive medicine is bang for the buck; that is, not whether it reduces healthcare spending but whether it buys more health than treating the disease does. "We don't ask whether cancer treatment or heart disease treatment saves money," said Dr. Steven Woolf, professor of family medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond. "But it is reasonable to ask how to make our healthcare dollar go further."
On that score, screening for hypertension and for some cancers (such as colorectal and breast) are good investments, he said, at less than $25,000 per year of healthy life. In contrast, such common treatments as angioplasty cost $100,000 or more per healthy year of life.
There are two glimmers of hope in this bleak picture. For preventive medicine to help rein in the nation's soaring healthcare spending, it should be provided someplace other than doctors' offices.
"Some of the most common chronic, preventable diseases might be best addressed outside the clinical setting," said the Trust's Levi, such as through wellness programs at YMCAs and health education and screening programs at houses of worship. "But that requires Medicaid to be more flexible in who they'll reimburse."
It also requires a more expansive definition of preventive medicine. The Trust suggests such steps as extending bus lines to parks so people without cars can go someplace pleasant for physical activity and other "community-based" efforts. These strategies save more money in healthcare spending than they cost.
For instance, at a program in Akron, Ohio, profiled in the new report, physicians and others coordinate care for patients with Type 2 diabetes. It reduced the average cost of care by more than 10 percent, or $3,185 per year, largely by reducing pricey emergency-room visits.
And at Boston Children's Hospital, an asthma program that sends community health workers into patients' homes to reduce the environmental triggers of asthma has saved $1.46 in healthcare costs for every $1 invested. It has reduced asthma-related hospital admissions by 80 percent and asthma-related emergency department visits by 60 percent, reports the Trust.
The other promising approach is to targetpreventive careat those most likely to develop a chronic disease, not at low-risk people. Such "smart" prevention increases the chances of preventing expensive diseases and saving money.
In contrast, unthinking expansion ofpreventive medicineis the wrong prescription, say experts.
"If you start giving preventive care to more people, many of whom won't benefit from it, it's going to be very, very expensive," said Tufts' Neumann.

Study: Americans Waste 40 Percent of Their Food
Click the green for further information
Americans throw away as much as 40 percent of their food per year; the equivalent of around $165 billion, according to a study released Tuesday.
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), an environmental advocacy group, said in its study that the average American family of four throws away the equivalent of $2,275 annually in food.
The study also found that in American landfills, food is the single largest component, while there has been a 50 percent increase in U.S. food waste since the 1970s.
The NRDC -Natural Resources Defense Councilnoted that if there were only a 15 percent reduction in the amount of food thrown away, then there would be enough to feed approximately 25 million Americans per year.
As a country, were essentially tossing every other piece of food that crosses our paththats money and precious resources down the drain, said Dana Gunders with the NRDC in a press release.
With drought affecting much of the country as well as corn and soybean crops, now is the time to embrace all the tremendous untapped opportunities to get more out of our food system, she added. We can do better.

Vegetarianism the Only Way to Go in 2050
Click the green parts for further information
Vegetarianism will likely be the only option for most of the worlds population by the year 2050, due to dwindling water and land resources, according to a recent report published by Swedish water scientists.
As the worlds population burgeons to around 9 billion in the next 40 years, there will not be enough resources or space to raise livestock to produce meat and dairy products. The current production and eating habits would end up creating a disastrous food shortage for the world, theStockholm International Water Institute, or SIWI, said in its report.
The report said that currently nearly one billion people still suffer from hunger and malnourishment even though there is more food than ever before, highlighting the waste and inefficiency of current modes of production.
It stressed that with severe agricultural challenges and water management issues, the worlds leaders need to think differently and focus on innovative ways to handle the problem.
The scientists noted that addressing hunger and feeding the worlds people is an immensely complicated situation, but said it boils down mainly to energy and water, which as they noted, need to be regarded as finite and not as free resources for the worlds food production.
Droughts in northern Africa have created a food shortage for millions of people in the region, while droughts in the United States are also set to drive the worlds food prices up by the end of the end of the year and next year.
The analysis showed that there will not be enough water available on current croplands to produce food for the expected population in 2050 if we follow current trends and changes towards diets common in Western nations, which have populations that eat high quantities of meat, SIWIs report said.
There will, however, be just enough water for people to comprise 5 percent of their diet with animal-based foods, including meat and dairy, the reports authors added. Currently, humans get around 20 percent of their calories from animal-based protein.
Even if the world switches over to a primarily plant-based diet, it is still unclear if that will be enough to avert a catastrophic food shortage.
SIWI stressed that governments must deal with the waste of food and improve upon the food-production system that is currently implemented.
The U.N. released a report in June that said agriculture consumes 70 percent of the worlds freshwater supply, most of which is from meat and dairy production, which also consumes 38 percent of the worlds land use, and produces 19 percent of the worlds greenhouse gases.
The SIWIs report was released ahead of the annual conference held in Stockholm this week, where over 2,500 delegates, NGO groups, scientists, and others converge to discuss matters related to water scarcity and management.rtages
In a recent report, aid agency Oxfam said that the worlds poorest people will face an unmitigated disaster over skyrocketing food prices because the food system is flawed.
Policy-makers have taken cheap food for granted for nearly 30 years. Those days are gone, it said and added that governments must end the obscene waste of food including burning it as biodiesel in our trucks and cars.

NEW YORKNo doubt you have personally experienced the benefits of a well-designed buildingjust as you have also been troubled or frustrated by one that is designed poorly, even if you couldnt put your finger on why. Research shows that the design of a building could affect your health or even be an aid in your healing process.
Age-old design concepts aim to provide better living and work environments. Basic design principles include natural lighting, proper ventilation, and something as simple and obvious as a good view. A lot of these principles have been ignored over the past 50 years, mostly for financial reasons, lack of interest, and simplistic beliefs such as bigger is better.
Sustainable design has been of growing interest to architects and clients across the building industry.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) guidelines have played a key role in reprioritizing the importance of healthily designed buildings. More evidence is coming forth to prove the effectiveness of a well-designed building.
Anastasia Harrison, director of Sustainability at design firm Gensler Associates, has more than 22 years of professional experience in architectural design and LEED consulting. At a recent seminar, she talked about research in to the benefits of green buildings. For example, 80 percent feel more comfortable and more at home in green buildings; 29 percent have a higher satisfaction rate and are hence more actively engaged; and the number of sick days in green buildings are reduced by 25 percent per year.

Views are also proving to aid the healing process. A study conducted by scientist Robert Olbrich over 10 years compared patients. One-half had views of brick walls while the other half had a view of nature. The latter were able to heal faster, and their stay time was one day shorter, according to Harrison.
Harrison described the considerations that went into designing a cancer institute in Arizona. They asked themselves, How can we take people to the outside, or bring the outside into them. So there are interior gardens and exterior gardens? Simple design considerations that orient toward views include gardens on site, and those that alter the building form to allow views from deeper within the buildings make a difference.
Other psychological studies by Thomas Joseph Doherty were able to prove that the effect of well-designed buildings could lower blood pressure, relieve anxiety, lower stress, sharpen mental states, and lessen hyperactivity experienced by children while suffering.
These concepts are actually not groundbreaking. These are simple concepts that we have known for centuries. Consider the courtyard castles and monasteries of Europe, or the classic buildings of Rome surrounding open forums. All these enable greater connection to the outdoors, natural light, and good ventilation.

As environmental conditions worsen and health problems abound, there is more of an effort to find the causes. Reintegrating simple environmental considerations in todays buildings is one solution.
Improving the health of our planet is intrinsically linked to our own health. The unprecedented developing drive over the past 50 years is putting unsustainable pressures on our planet and our health, said Breeze Glazer, who works in architecture and design firm Perkins + Will.

Why the Beaver Should Thank the Wolf

September, 2012
Based on the book byMary Ellen Hannibal- the author of The Spine of the Continent - (Read the book - it is worth it)
In September, 2012, a group of environmental nonprofits said they wouldchallengethe federal governments removal ofEndangered Species Actprotections for wolves in Wyoming. Since there are only about 328 wolves in a state with a historic blood thirst for the hides of these top predators, the nonprofits are probably right that lacking protection, Wyoming wolves are toast.
Many Americans, even as they view the extermination of a species as morally anathema, struggle to grasp the tangible effects of the loss of wolves. It turns out that, far from being freeloaders on the top of the food chain, wolves have a powerful effect on the well-being of the ecosystems around them from the survival of trees and riverbank vegetation to, perhaps surprisingly, the health of the populations of their prey.
An example of this can be found in Wyomings Yellowstone National Park, where wolves were virtually wiped out in the 1920s andreintroduced in the 90s. Since the wolves have come back, scientists have notedan unexpected improvement in many of the parks degraded stream areas.
Stands of aspen and other native vegetation, once decimated by overgrazing, are now growing up along the banks. This may have something to do with changing fire patterns, but it is also probably because elk and other browsing animals behave differently when wolves are around. Instead of eating greenery down to the soil, they take a bite or two, look up to check for threats, and keep moving. The greenery can grow tall enough to reproduce.
Beavers, despite being on the wolfs menu, also benefit when their predators are around. The healthy vegetation encouraged by the presence of wolves provides food and shelter to beavers. Beavers in turn go on to create dams that help keep rivers clean and lessen the effects of drought. Beaver activity also spreads a welcome mat for thronging biodiversity. Bugs, amphibians, fish, birds and small mammals find the water around dams to be an ideal habitat.
So the beavers keep the rivers from drying up while, at the same time, healthy vegetation keeps the rivers from flooding, and all this biological interaction helps maintain rich soil that better sequesters carbon that stuff we want to get out of the atmosphere and back into the ground. In other words, by helping to maintain a healthy ecosystem, wolves are connected to climate change: without them, these landscapes would be more vulnerable to the effects of those big weather events we will increasingly experience as the planet warms.
Scientists call this sequence of impacts down the food chain a trophic cascade. The wolf is connected to the elk is connected to the aspen is connected to the beaver. Keeping these connections going ensures healthy, functioning ecosystems, which in turn support human life.
Another example is the effect of sea otters on kelp, which provides food and shelter for a host of species. Like the aspen for the elk, kelp is a favorite food of sea urchins. By hunting sea urchins, ottersprotect the vitality of the kelpand actually boost overall biodiversity. Without them, the ecosystem tends to collapse; the coastal reefs become barren, and soon not much lives there.
Unfortunately, sea otters are in the cross hairs of a conflict equivalent to the wolf wars. Some communities in southeast Alaska want to allow the hunting of sea otters in order to decrease their numbers and protect fisheries. But the rationale that eliminating the predator increases the prey is shortsighted and ignores larger food-web dynamics. A degraded ecosystem will be far less productive over all.
Having fewer fish wouldnt just hurt fishermen: it would also endanger the other end of the trophic scale the phytoplankton that turn sunshine into plant material, and as every student of photosynthesis knows, create oxygen and sequester carbon. In lakes, predator fish keep the smaller fish from eating all the phytoplankton, thus sustaining the lakes rate of carbon uptake.
Around the planet, large predators are becoming extinct at faster rates than other species. And losing top predators has an outsize effect on the rate of loss of many other species below them on the food chain as well as on the plant life that is so important to the balance of our ecosystems.
So what can be done? For one thing, we have begun to realize that parks like Yellowstone are not the most effective means of conservation. Putting a boundary around an expanse of wilderness is an intuitive idea not borne out by the science. Many top predators must travel enormous distances to find mates and keep populations from becoming inbred. No national park is big enough for wolves, for example. Instead, conservation must be done on a continental scale. We can still erect our human boundaries around cities and towns, mines and oil fields but in order to sustain a healthy ecosystem, we need to build in connections so that top predators can move from one wild place to another.
Many biologists have warned that we are approaching another mass extinction. The wolf is still endangered and should be protected in its own right. But we should also recognize that bringing all the planets threatened and endangered species back to healthy numbers as well as mitigating the effects of climate change means keeping top predators around.

The Disappearing Moose
Typical of the kind of shifts that a warming climate is causing
For such large creatures, moose are a relatively hidden species. They are hard to count. They live where humans do not like to go, along the boggy fringes of northern lakes and rivers where the sound of summer mosquitoes fills the air. They thrive in cold weather, and their well-being depends on sharp, cold autumns and late springs, which protect them from their most important predator: not the wolf, but the winter tick.
Moose are dying off across North Americafor a number of reasons, most of which can be linked to a warming climate and an eroding winter. Long, warm autumns and early, wet springs benefit winter ticks, which can cluster on moose in unbelievable numbers, causing anemia, loss of appetite, hair loss from rubbing weakening the animals at the onset of winter, just when they need their strength most.
In the Upper Midwest, moose are at risk from liver fluke, a parasitic disease, and brain worm, which can afflict the nervous system. In British Columbia, they have lost protective cover thanks to the die-back of white pine forests caused by an epidemic of pine bark beetles. The epidemic, largely attributed to climate change, has also robbed grizzly bears of the seeds they depend on for winter food.
The collapse in moose numbers one Minnesota population has fallen from 4,000 animals to fewer than 100 is something scientists can track but otherwise can do nothing about. It is typical of the kind of shifts that a warming climate is causing, tipping the balance in ways that favor some species and do grievous harm to others. It is the sign of an entire ecosystem caught up in changes largely brought about by human activity.

Why Is It Illegal To Ride a Manatee?
Riding a dolphin also violates federal law

What is a manatee? See the link below at the end of this article for detailed info and a picture
Anyone looking for cheap thrills and a quick brush with nature should reconsider thoughts of riding amanatee. As aFlorida woman is learning, multiple federal and state laws can be swiftly wielded in defense of the vulnerable sea cow.
Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez, 52, accused of riding a manatee in a waterway in Pinellas County over the weekend, turned herself in after authorities on her trail released photos that appear to show her mid-ride.
TheFlorida ManateeSanctuary Act outlaws riding or touching theslow-moving marine mammals. And whileGutierrezwasn't immediately charged, her alleged crime is punishable by a $500 fine or a jail term of up to 60 days, according to theTampa Bay Times.
There was no immediate indication that federal charges would be pressed, but Gutierrez's alleged offense also would violate the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the U.S. Endangered Species Act, under which she could be subject to thousands of dollars in additional fines for harassing aprotected species.
Such penalties may seem outsized for a joy ride on athick-skinned manatee, which was not thought to have been physically injured in the encounter. But authorities' refusal to regard Gutierrez's alleged crime as harmless whimsy is perhaps acknowledgement that human interactions with manatees are precisely what threaten to end the endangered animal's existence.
The same easygoing and curious nature that would likely predispose a manatee to taking on a human passenger seems to contribute to the species' vulnerability to being mowed down by passing speed boats.
[Manatee Mystery: Why Can't They Avoid Speedboats?]
About 87 Florida manatees are killed by humans every year, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, most of them dying in boat collisions. And with an estimated Florida population of 3,800 manatees, 87 is a grave number.
Coastal development, which has altered and destroyed manatee habitat, also threatens the species.
Swimmers seeking a visceral interaction with a non-manatee marine mammal, take note: Riding a dolphin the gazelle to the manatee's cow also violates federal law.

Additional info: Solar storm of 1859 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaen. wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_storm_of_1859
____________
A single electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack could affect the entire United States. Power would go out, financial infrastructure would be lost, electronics would be fried. Cars, trains, and airplanes would be useless hunks of metal. If energy, pumps, and transportation were knocked out, food and water would become a dwindling commodity.
An EMP capable of causing damage of this magnitude could come from either a nuclear weapon detonated 15 miles above the earths surface or from solar weather as the sun approaches its solar maximum.
Despite the risk, the United States remains unprepared. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is working with other government departments to raise awareness about the threat, according to Brandon Wales, director of the DHS Infrastructure Threat and Risk Analysis Center, who testified before the House Committee on Homeland Security on Sept. 12.
A nuclear weapon detonated above the earths surface, also known as a high-altitude EMP (HEMP), could blanket the entire continental United States, and A concern is the growing number of nation-states that in the past have sponsored terrorism and are now developing capabilities that could be used in a HEMP attack, Wales said, according to a transcript.
He added that a coronal mass ejection (CME) plasma hurricane, which can come from solar activity, could create low-frequency EMP similar to a megaton-class nuclear HEMP detonation over the United States, which could disrupt or damage the power grid, undersea cables, and other critical infrastructures.
Solar storms that could have caused significant EMP damage have occurred in the past, but unlike today, reliance on technology was not widespread enough to cause much harm.
The largest known solar storm took place during a solar maximum in 1859, known as the Carrington Event. The sun is again entering its solar maximum of around that same size, National Geographic reported, citing NASA. Similar solar activity is expected within the next two years.
In 1859, such reports were mostly curiosities. But if something similar happened today, the worlds high-tech infrastructure could grind to a halt, states the March 2, 2011, National Geographic report.
According to Wales, the DHS is working closely with information provided by the Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack. The commission has released three comprehensive reports since 2002, which look at the vulnerabilities of the United States to an EMP.
The commissions last report was released in April 2008, and states, Because of the ubiquitous dependence of U.S. society on the electrical power system, its vulnerability to an EMP attack, coupled with the EMPs particular damage mechanisms, creates the possibility of long-term, catastrophic consequences.
It states that an EMP attack could leave significant parts of the electrical infrastructure out of service for periods measured in months to a year or more.
The loss of the electrical infrastructure is more serious than just losing computers and cellphones. The most fundamental threat would be to water and food supplies.

Food infrastructure in the United States is heavily dependent upon modern technology. Farming requires technology, as do transportation and refrigeration. The commission states, It is highly possible that the recovery time would be very slow and the amount of human suffering great, including loss of life.
The water infrastructure faces a similar threat, since it is reliant on treatment plants, pumps, and other systems. The commission said that, Faced with the failure of the water infrastructure in a single large city, [federal, state, and local emergency services] would be hard-pressed to provide the population with the minimum water requirements necessary to sustain life over a time frame longer than a few days.

Communal Breaks: A Chance to Bond
Source: The New York Times
ByPHYLLIS KORKKI

WHAT is one of the most important decisions a company can make? Its where to put the coffee.
O.K., maybe its not quite as earth-shattering as, say, hiring a C.E.O. or choosing which products to make. But well-designed beverage areas are a surprisingly important contributor to productivity, according to Ben Waber, president and C.E.O. ofSociometric Solutions, a workplace consulting firm.
In general when we look at what makes people happy and effective at work, its being able to spend time with a close group of people, Dr. Waber said. You need to structure work in such a way that people have those opportunities.
As I wrote inmy last column, taking frequent breaks allows workers to recharge their internal energy. Individual breaks a walk around the block or quiet time alone in a conference room enable a worker to return, refreshed, to arduous pursuits.
But social breaks are also important to a workers and a companys well-being. They reinforce bonds, improve morale and increase possibilities for collaboration.
Which brings us back to beverages. Sociometric recently worked with a pharmaceutical business that had many different pantry areas with no seating. And employees apologized to Dr. Waber about the awfulness of the coffee.
This represented a big opportunity lost, he said. After analyzing worker communication patterns, Sociometric recommended that the company remove many of the small spaces and create a big, central gathering area with ample seating and better coffee.
As a result, people began mingling with a wider array of co-workers, and levels of collaboration and performance improved, Dr. Waber said.
Breaks are also meant for venting. Consider Sociometrics experience with call centers at a major bank. The bank had thought it would be more efficient to stagger workers breaks so that not too many people from a team were off at the same time.
Somewhat counterintuitively, Sociometric advised the bank to schedule breaks for a team together, with an alternate crew filling in. The results were a 25 percent improvement in the number of calls answered and a reduction in employee stress, Dr. Waber said.
No one was forced to socialize during the breaks, but the new schedule created a natural way for employees to vent about problems and seek help from one another, he said.
THERES little sense in ordering employees into the break room. Requiring employees to socialize can bring stress, and while it may further work or career goals, it can run counter to a breaks function of restoring energy, saidJohn P. Trougakos, an assistant management professor at the University of Toronto Scarborough and the Rotman School of Management.
Technology companies have long embraced the concept of voluntary group breaks as a path to creativity and collaboration. In fact, the idea for Gmail was first conceived by a small group at one of Googles cafes, said Katelin Todhunter-Gerberg, a senior associate on Googles communications team.
In addition to cafes and coffee bars, Google provides Ping-Pong tables, pool tables and video games. It even has a bowling alley that can be booked like a conference room. Employees can also hike, bike and train for races together, and form groups for activities like wine tasting.
Breaks are also good simply because they propel people out of their chairs. The evidence is overwhelming that prolonged sitting endangers workers health, and that people who move often throughout the day are healthier than those who stay seated.
Thats whyDr. Toni Yancey, a professor of health services at the University of California, Los Angeles, supports group exercise breaks. Her studies have shown that such exercise can reduce sick leave and workers compensation claims.
She developed a range of exercises for people who are your typical overweight sedentary adults, wearing almost any attire. Ideally, the exercises are to be performed in two 10-minute sessions during the workday. People might dance to salsa music, say, or mimic the motions of pitching and batting in a baseball-themed program.
Dr. Yancey favors voluntary participation in a structured program that is supported by management. The force of the group, she says, is much stronger than individual good intentions.

Education: A Predictor of Longer Life
ByPhilip Moeller
U.S.News World Report
This is for your personal use, only
If you want to know how long you will live, you might stop fretting over genetics and family history and instead look at your educational achievements. Education is certainly not the only variable associated with longer lives, but it may be the most powerful.
[SeeTop 10 U.S. Places for Healthcare.]
Recent study findings published in the journalHealth Affairspresent a remarkable update to the already considerable research showing education to be a powerful predictor of longer life spans.
"The lifelong relationships of education and its correlates with health and longevity are striking," the article said. "Education exerts its direct beneficial effects on health through the adoption of healthier lifestyles, better ability to cope with stress, and more effective management of chronic diseases. However, the indirect effects of education through access to more privileged social position, better-paying jobs, and higher income are also profound."
While the findings are good news for educated Americans, they also indicate that medical and lifestyle breakthroughs that have triggered the much-publicized longevity revolution are not being enjoyed by less-educated Americans whose lifespans have fallen further behind over time. This trend has implications for the debate about raising the Social Security retirement age. It also adds a compelling mortality tale to the economic costs of the nation's falling educational-achievement levels compared with other nations.
Within U.S. racial groups, educational achievement is associated with significant longevity benefits. But compared across racial groups, the longevity gap is even greater, which indicates continued race-based differences in how long Americans live. TheHealth Affairsarticle was co-authored by 15 leading academic experts in aging and longevity. The research was conducted by the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on an Aging Society.
[See10 Things Aging Americans Want.]
"We found that in 2008 U.S. adult men and women with fewer than twelve years of education had life expectancies not much better than those of all adults in the 1950s and 1960s," the article said. "When race and education are combined, the disparity is even more striking."
Within racial and ethnic groups, there was a pronounced longevity benefit when comparing people with 16 or more years of school with those with less than 12 years. Among women, the differences in life expectancy at birth were 10.4 years among whites, 6.5 years among blacks, and 2.9 years for Hispanics. Among men, the gaps were 12.9 years among whites, 9.7 years among blacks, and 5.5 years for Hispanics.
But the differences were more striking across all racial groups. "White U.S. men and women with 16 years or more of schooling had life expectancies far greater than black Americans with fewer than 12 years of education--14.2 years more for white men than black men, and 10.3 years more for white women than black women," the article said.
"These gaps have widened over time and have led to at least two 'Americas,' if not multiple others, in terms of life expectancy, demarcated by level of education and racial-group membership." Compared with similar 1990 measures, by 2008, the gap among men had widened by nearly a year, and among women, by more than two-and-a-half years.
[SeeTips on Social Security Spousal Benefits.]
"The current life expectancy at birth for U.S. blacks with fewer than twelve years of education is equivalent to the life expectancy observed in the 1960s and 1970s for all people in the United States, but blacks' longevity has been improving with time," the article said.
That hasn't been the case for whites. "White males with fewer than twelve years of education currently have a life expectancy at birth equivalent to that of all men in the United States born in 1972, while white females with similar education have the life expectancy of all women in the country born in 1964," it added. "And the longevity of these white males and females is growing worse over time."
The impact of education on lifespans is so powerful, the authors said, that improving people's health and lifestyle behaviors alone "are not likely to have a major impact on disparities in longevity." The authors called on policymakers to "implement educational enhancements at young, middle, and older ages for people of all races, to reduce the large gap in health and longevity that persists today."
