Image courtesy of Clifford Ando Department of Classics The faculty of the Classics department work in literature, linguistics, history, archaeology, and philosophy. We are developing innovative approaches to the study of Greco-Roman antiquity through our collaborative work with scholars in a wide variety of fields. We belong to international research networks and we teach, publish, and host workshops and conferences with colleagues from Art History, the Committee on Social Thought, Comparative Literature, the Divinity School, English, Germanic Studies, History, the Law School, Linguistics, the Oriental Institute, Philosophy, Political Science, Romance Languages, and Theater and Performance Studies.In keeping with the wide ranging research agendas of our faculty, the culture of Classics at the University of Chicago is pluralistic. The Department offers four different Ph.D. programs, each of which fosters a distinctive interdisciplinary approach to the study of Greco-Roman antiquity: Classical Languages and Literatures, the Ancient Mediterranean World, Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy, and the joint Ph.D. in Classics and Social Thought. More information about each of these programs can be found in the program descriptions.   The department welcomes (back) Brian Krostenko as Visiting Professor for Autumn Quarter 2020. Professor Krostenko is Associate professor in the Department of Classics at the University of Notre Dame and the author of Cicero, Catullus, and the Language of Social Performance (Chicago 2001). On November 19th at 4.20pm the Rhetoric Poetics Workshop will be hosting a live reading of Euripides’ Bacchae, in a new translation by former UChicago student Emma Pauly (AB ’16). Congratulations to Jenna Sarchio, who has been awarded a Mellon Foundation–University of Chicago Dissertation Completion Fellowship as well as a dissertation research award from the Elder Olson Fund of the Division of Humanities, which supports one student each year from across the division writing on the critical study of poetry and poetics. Congratulations to Rosalie Stoner, who has been awarded a Mellon Foundation–University of Chicago Dissertation Completion Fellowship as well as a Stuart Tave Teaching Fellowship for her course, “Is Rhetoric a Good Thing? The Debate Between Rhetoric and Philosophy.”
