Together Living with Cancer

Web Name: Together Living with Cancer

We’re delighted that you have found your way here! If the word cancer has become part of your daily concern, you’ve come to the right place. Whether you have been recently diagnosed, are in treatment or are struggling with the long-term impact of cancer, or have a loved one who has cancer, we hope you will find these resources to be helpful.

What you will find here:

The complete text of Juanita Ryan’s book Keep Breathing: What To Do When You Can’t Figure Out What To Do Selected portions of Barbara Milligan’s book Desperate Hope: Experiencing God in the Midst of Breast Cancer The complete text of the leader’s manual for the Together Living with Cancer support group.

These resources can be used by you individually, or they can be used as the basis for conversation with others. The TLC Leader’s Manual provides guidelines for a support group, complete with suggestions about meeting format and group discussion topics.

We’re both in the helping professions. Juanita is a therapist and Barbara is a spiritual director. And we’re both cancer survivors. (See the About section for further information). Our writing is informed by our professional training and experience, but it primarily reflects our personal journeys with cancer. We both share about the emotional and spiritual challenges we experienced and about the many gifts of grace that blessed and transformed us along the way. We both live and write out of our faith as Christians, which is central to who we are and how we struggle and live with life’s troubles and blessings. But we want to make this a welcoming place for people of all faiths and perspectives. It is our prayer that some of what we have to offer here will bring you hope and strength and a sense that you are not alone with whatever you are facing.

We hope to add more resources in the future. . . so check back every once in a while!

May your roots sink deeply in the soil of God’s love,

Juanita Ryan

Quote of the moment

"Jesus accepted suffering and rejected shame. He “endured the cross and scorned the shame” (Hebrews 12:2). We tend to reject the suffering—we deny it, run from it, tune it out—but we tend to embrace the shame as if it were the truth. Shame, however, is a lie. None of us is ever “less than.” None of us is unlovable, beyond repair, or worthless. We are loved and cherished by a redeeming, healing, saving God."
