Three Challenges to tackle Marine Debris

CHALLENGE 1 FOR ALL

Reduce Plastic Consumption

We all have a responsibility to protect our precious planet. We can and must make choices that reduce our plastic consumption and reduce our waste.

CHALLENGE 2 FOR AUTHORITIES

Improve Solid Waste Management

Solid Waste Management is mainly the responsibility of governments. There must be accountability and visibility for their decisions on regulations and law enforcement. With innovative solutions, companies and civil society support the centralised action of public authorities.

CHALLENGE 3 FOR OCEANKITA

Prevent plastic leakage
in water bodies

OceanKita is committed to aggregating the most cost-effective solutions to collect marine litter. We operate in all types of water bodies from rivers to coastal waters, clearing as much as possible before plastics start to degrade and spread.

In terms of influence on the climate and biodiversity, including pollution and the accumulation ofwaste, the influence of humans is colossal...to the point of putting their own survival at stake.

But there is another way. Oceankita is working to reduce plastic pollution and marine litter. Webelieve that every action makes a difference, like the fable of the hummingbird fighting a forest fire:

“A forest fire was raging while the animals watched in shock, overwhelmed and unable to act. Thetiny hummingbird raced to the stream and took a drop of water – back and forth it went, droppingwater onto the flames. The other animals stood watching; the elephant with his large trunk, thetoucan with his large beak and shouted ‘What do you think you can do? You are too little!’. Thehummingbird, without stopping, turned to them and said, ‘I’m doing the best I can’.

We invite every one of you to be another hummingbird. We inviteyou to join the fight with OceanKita, support or partner with us.

We eat, drink, and breathe plastic...!

Plastics have penetrated the food chain

The water cycle: Meaning micro plastics are already everywhere.

Learn more about the price of plastics

Marine litter ruins our economies and jeopardises our health

Plastics break down over time, becoming microplastics, permeating throughout our environment, impossible to see but permeating throughout our environment, impossible to catch and dangerous to the ecosystems, our economies (tourism, fisheries, etc.), and our health.

The more we wait, the more expensive it is to repair

As we have seen with climate change, fixing the problem costs far more than preventing it in the first place. And this is just the very beginning.

The real cost of a product is not the price you pay for it. It is also the cost of its social and environmental impact :

Let’s take the example of a plastic bag (probably only used for a few minutes) that becomes unmanaged waste.

Next

The real cost is the additional damages to the local ecosystems, which then spreads further afield to the pollution of air, water and soil, contributing to climate change in terms of :

oil extraction, manufacturing, transportationwaste collection and treatment (landfill, etc.)effort required to remove it from the environment and then dispose of itif it is not removed, the plastic bag will degrade further in a river bed or in the ocean, possibly killing mammals or birds or entering the food chaingenerating neurodegenerative diseases, premature deaths ...

Why we must also collect marine litter

We believe in an essential combination of actions
We too believe that the preventive measures can ultimately stop plastic pollution but it will take…decades.
By that time, plastic accumulation will so huge that the damages will be irreversible.
At OceanKita, we believe in a combination of actions. It is crucial we scale up an efficient collection to mitigate plastic leakage.
Learn more about the need for a combination of actions

Preventive measures can ultimately solve the issue of plastic pollution. What are they?

Improvement of waste management, law enforcement, education, good governance, regulations, ban of single-use plastics, non-fossil plastics, alternative packaging, eco conception of products, etc.

When plastic pollution will be behind us?

It will take decades, at best. In addition factors like lasting poverty and a lack of understanding tend to slow down the efforts. But this impact can gain momentum when the preventative measures are combined and embedded over time.

What will happen if we don’t also collect plastics?

Only a very small percentage of the plastics can be collected after they have left the coastlines and we cannot afford to have plastics increase. Ultimately the accumulation of plastics will kill the ocean and then us.

One Planet and One Ocean
There are NO BOUNDARIES for pollution, marine debris and climate change. These issues are not local issues. They are always global.
