What Are MOFs?

Metal-Organic Frameworks are a new class of advanced materials. Made from organic linkers and metal ions, they are sponge-like materials with exceptionally large surface areas. Their unique physicochemical properties and engineerable structure offer opportunities for unmatchable capacity and selectivity for controlling and removing target gases, such as CO2.

Taking carbon dioxide as an example, MOFs are specially engineered to capture and remove CO2. They possess bespoke chemistries to specifically target CO2 and have one the highest known capacitiesfor the gas. Moreover, they can release the captured CO2 with a fraction of the energy required by amine scrubbing technology.
