The RESILIENCE project was created due to the belief that people’s capacity to cope with hazards and shocks would be improved if there was greater interaction between actors involved in the different fields of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Poverty reduction (PR). This implies that the aid sector needs to focus on community resilience via a global approach which integrates these three different fields.
Although there have been attempts to share experiences and “best practices” in relation to such an approach, these are not easily replicated and have not sufficiently addressed barriers that exist between DRR, CCA and PR. This is why CARE Nederland, Groupe URD and the Disaster Studies of Wageningen University, who all have substantial experience in these fields, decided to join forces to identify the challenges and opportunities involved in integrating DRR, CCA and PR.
The research is based on field studies and workshops from countries facing different types of disasters:

a semi-arid area affected by droughts (Borana, Ethiopia) a tropical lowland prone to floods (Pando, Bolivia) and peat lands prone to fires (Kalimantan, Indonesia)Workshops

For the RESILIENCE project a series of local multi-stakeholder workshops where organised involving the local community, NGOs, local authorities and the private sector were organized to improve understanding of each stakeholder’s role in achieving more integrated programmes. The outcomes from these workshop and data analysis were benchmarked during an EU stakeholder workshop in Brussels the 8th Autumn School on Humanitarian Aid - “Resilience: buzzword or useful concept?” in Plaisians and the DRR, LRRD, RESILIENCE learning event in The Hague. The outcomes of these activities helped to improve understanding of the challenges and opportunities involved in reinforcing resilience, and for¬med the basis for our RESILIENCE toolkit.

RESILIENCE Toolkit

The output of the RESILIENCE project is featuring on this website. It exists of a set of tools, enabling practitioners to watch the current dilemma’s and issues from the grassroots through a set of 3 country documentaries, to play with the set of key points developed for improved integration of DRR, CCA and PR through a developed serious game and to learn the theoretical background on DRR, CCA and PR and our key points through our handbook for practitioners.
