Culture, Grandchildren, Grandparents, General Suggestions to Pray with Confidence for your GrandchildrenJanuary 8, 2021Do you get tired of praying the same prayers for your grandchildren and their parents? Do you feel like your prayers have become humdrum, repetitive, or pointless in 2020? Let s set a goal of praying intentionally for our grandchildren and their parents in 2021. A number of years ago, I felt that my prayers were general and superficial. I prayed that my grandchildren would be safe and have a good day, but those prayers felt rote and were probably powerless.     However, that all changed when I asked God to give me wisdom and insight on how I could intentionally pray with a purpose for my grandchildren and their parents. I discovered that God’s Word is a great resource to help me to pray not only for my grandchildren and their parents but also for myself. I believe that no prayer is more effective than the one that finds its roots in God’s Word, which is alive, powerful, and will not return void.   When I pray according to God’s Word, I am in line with His will, enabling me to pray with wisdom and power, according to Hebrews 4:12: “The Word of God is full of living power” (NLT). I have found it helpful to spend time in God’s Word to know His promises and commands because my mind is renewed to think His thoughts. His Word helps me to see my grandchildren’s needs from His eternal perspective instead of from my limited perspective.  John 15:7 promises that “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you” (NIV) I believe God’s words can be the foundation of powerful prayers for our grandchildren and their parents.                       As I started claiming God’s promises and personalizing the Scriptures, I experienced more boldness and confidence in my praying. I believe that nothing threatens the enemy, Satan, more than when we are intentionally praying God’s Word for our grandchildren, their parents, and ourselves. Many Scripture passages in Psalms, Proverbs, the Gospels, and Paul’s writings can be used in our prayers.    In our increasingly complex and turbulent world, we don’t know about the future. However, like grandparents who love the Lord, we know who holds the future. We must be engaged in prayer for our grandchildren and their parents to keep their hearts and minds from falling captive to the enemy’s deception and lies.  We read in Psalm 3:5, “In the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation” (NIV).  Will you join me in laying your requests at the feet of Jesus, waiting in expectation for Him to answer those prayers? Here are some Scripture passages to begin to pray intentionally for your grandchildren and their parents to love and follow Jesus wholeheartedly. “The earnest prayer of a righteous [grandparent]has great power and produces wonderful results”James 5:16 (NLT) “The Lord. . . hears the prayer of the righteous”Proverbs 15:29) “As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing toBy grandparenting01Culture, Grandchildren, Grandparents, General Have a Blessed 2021December 31, 2020Christian Grandparenting Network is Calling all Grandparents to make 2021 a year of intentional Prayer for their Grandchildren. In John 3:16, NLT, we read,“God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” A treasure is something of great value. God thought our hearts were of such great importance that He sent his Son to die on the cross for our sins so we could have a personal relationship with him and spend eternity with him.He treasures our hearts enough to die for us; He wants to dwell in our hearts. Guard Relationship with God If we believe God values our hearts enough to give His Son to die for us, we must guard our hearts. By guarding our hearts, we protect our relationship with Him. We must choose to abide in Him on a consistent daily basis; it does not happen automatically. He desires us to handle our hearts as His treasure, hold them tightly, and not be careless. We can encourage our grandchildren to allow their hearts to be tender and teachable to God’s Word and not be careless with His treasure. Our grandchildren are living in a battle, a brutal and vicious war against a subtle and friendly enemy (Satan) who knows his time is short. We have a responsibility to pray for them and encourage them to guard their hearts. Proverbs 4:23 NLT says, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”If we as grandparents guard our hearts, we will have a part in nourishing the souls of our dear grandchildren. Pray your grandchildren will recognize the deception of the world and guqrd their hearts. My four-year-old great-granddaughter was thrilled to blow out the candles. Later that evening when her parents were putting her in bed,she prayed that Jesus would not forget to go to his birthday party tomorrow. We were happy to hear her response to the birthday celebration for Jesus. She got the message. Let’s look at the response of the shepherds After the angels announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds, they immediately ran to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph and the baby was lying in a manger. Then the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel said about the baby. The people who heard their story were astonished. The shepherds returned to their fields and flocks, glorifying and praising God. However, Mary quietly treasured all these things in her heart and thought about them often. ₁  Let’s look at the response of the wise men from the East Later some wise men from the East were guided by a spectacular star who came to their house fell down before baby Jesus and worshipped him, bringing expensive gifts with them. ₂  Look for a star of guidance in your own life and be willing to follow wherever it leads you in 2021. 2 Now, what is your response to the birth of Jesus Christ? Christmas day is past the tree will soon come down, and the decorations will be put away for another year. Are you glorifying and praising God for sending his Son into the world to save our sins as you are packing away your Christmas decorations? Are you worshipping the Lord and quietly meditating on His Word? Pray that your children and grandchildren’s response to the birth of Christ will be one of glorifying and praising God for the new life he provided. Pray they will stand as a symbol of hope in a dark world, adorned with God’s strength and beauty. Don’t pack Jesus away with the Christmas decorations until next Christmas. My prayer is that your response is to grow in your spiritual life so you will be able to be an even greater godly influence in the lives of your grandchildren in 2021.  We are living in crucial pandemic times; our grandchildren need grandparents to intentionally pray for them. By Lillian Penner, Prayer Director for Christian Grandparenting Network.lpenner@christiangrandparenting.net ₁ Taken from Luke 2:15-20 TLB ₂ Matthew 2:11 By grandparenting00Culture, Grandchildren, Grandparents, General A Spiritual Meaning for the Christmas TreeDecember 20, 2020The Christmas tree, the most significant symbol of Christmas, is an evergreen tree, representing life. The custom of erecting a Christmas tree is historically traced to the 15th century. “The tree was traditionally decorated with edibles such as apples, nuts, or other foods. In the 18th century, it began to be illuminated by candles, which were ultimately replaced by Christmas lights after the advent of electrification. Today, there are many traditional ornaments, such as garland, tinsel, and candy canes. An angel or star might be placed at the top of the tree to represent angel Gabriel or the Star of Bethlehem from the Nativity. [1] The branches on the evergreen tree remind us of the many roles we have in our lives, such as parenting, grandparenting, etc. They also remind us of all the relationships we have with our family, friends, neighbors, careers, hobbies, activities, sports, etc.As we submit each of these branches to God, He will adorn them with ornaments, as He develops our character, with the fruit of the Spirit. Let’s look at the ornaments as representing the fruit of the Spirit. If we accept God’s unconditional LOVE in our hearts, allowing His love to flow through us to others, it will give us JOY. Our hearts will be full of joy amidst the daily challenges in our lives because “The joy of the Lord will be our strength.”When we experience the joy of the Lord as our strength, we will have peace. PEACE is calmness in our hearts amidst the challenges we face, extending through our lives to others. After our adorning with love, joy, and peace will empower us with PATIENCE, an attitude that does not lose hope for others even if they irritate or hurt us. KINDNESS expressed with our words and deeds to a sad or lonely heart maybe their connection for Jesus. Then GOODNESS will flow into good works from our kind heart, reflecting the character of God attracting others to Jesus. Another ornament placed on the tree is FAITHFULNESS. Just as God is faithful to us, it is vital that we, too, are dependable and trustworthy at all times. Faithfulness brings us to GENTLENESS, an ability to be pleasant, composed, and controlled in the daily challenges of life. The last ornament we will place on the tree is SELF-CONTROL, which adorns our lives with the character of strength to restrain us from doing wrong. We cannot have self-control without all the other ornaments. Then we will wrap the tree with a garland of God’s righteousness and place the star on the top directing people to Jesus. We will plug in the lights illuminating the tree representing Jesus the light of the world, a symbol of hope. Just as we have beautiful Christmas trees in our homes, our lives will be beautiful when adorned with the fruit of the Spirit. This year let’s give our grandchildren a spiritual application of the Christmas tree representing everlasting life adorned with the ornaments of the fruit ofBy grandparenting10Culture, Grandchildren, Grandparents, General An Answer for a Blue and Gloomy Christmas during our PandemicDecember 16, 2020Does the song, I ll be home for Christmas ¹ Frank Sinatra made famous in the 50s, make you blue and gloomy because you are not going to see all of your children and grandchildren during this Christmas season make you sad? Grandparents love to be with their loved ones to celebrate Christmas, the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. My husband and I will miss several of our family members this year, so we can identify with you if you are disappointed. The current COVID pandemic is changing many of our plans for Christmas. However, in my winter morning routine, I like to sit by the fire, have a cup of tea, and read from my favorite devotional book,Jesus Callingby Sarah Young. She reminds me of the precious gift of God s presence in my life and the peace that is available to fill my deepest longings when my focus is on Him. God never meant for us to be self-sufficient. He designed us to need Him so we will stay close to Him and be complete in Him. He is sitting at the right hand of God, waiting for us to bring our lonely heavy hearts to Him to experience His peace, which only He can give. Very often, I want to figure out how to solve my issues. Sometimes I try to bury or deny my neediness by pacifying my longings for people or possessions.God carefully designed our hopes and feelings of incompleteness to point us to Him to weather the storms of life. Sarah Young writes, When your focus is broad enough to include Me I(Jesus) in your thoughts, you feel safe and complete. When your perception narrows so that problems or details fill your consciousness, you feel empty and incomplete. ² During the Christmas season, we often hear Isaiah 9:6, For to us a Child is born, and He will be called Wonderful Counselor. A counselor is an adviser, an advocate, or one who gives guidance and instruction. With the promise of Jesus as our counselor, ask yourself, What need am I holding in my heart, that I can trust God for guidance today? As believers in Jesus Christ, we have the privilege to wrap our neediness, our concerns, our loneliness, and our worries in a package, place a bow on it, and give it to Jesus this Christmas. He is waiting to receive our package so He can provide us with a gift of His peace, which will be beyond our comprehension. Prayer: Dear Father, I want to come to you with all my neediness. Forgive me for trying to bury and deny my thoughts and feelings, pacifying my deepest wishes with people or possessions. Help me to focus my thoughts on You so I will be aware of your presence. In Jesus name, Amen. ¹http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pk-SLQPYJ0 ² Sarah Young, Jesus Calling (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson, 2004). p 358.
