The number of COVID-19 cases in Rhode Island and across the nation are staggering. On Wednesday and Thursday this week, there were over 900 daily cases reported in Rhode Island. We must do better.While restrictions have cut into our daily lives for the past eight months, and have become frustrating at times, if we do not continue to wear masks, limit our interactions, and stay at home when we are sick, a lock down is imminent. The spread of the virus is overwhelming our hospitals, and a potential lock down will be devastating to our small businesses.Please keep this in mind when you go to call a friend to come over this weekend or arrange a family gathering. We must take extra precautions now to save our fellow neighbors over the longer term.Free asymptomatic COVID-19 testing is available at portal.ri.gov. The State is also streamlining ways people can access their test results: https://portal.ri.gov/resultsA reminder regarding the guidelines that are currently in place:​ Rhode Islanders should only be going out for essential activities, such as work, doctors’ appointments, and the grocery store. Face masks will be worn at all times, indoors and outdoors, when in the presence of non-household members. Groups must remain consistent and be limited to interactions with the same 10 people or less. For instance, residents should not be socializing with 10 people on Saturday, and a new group of 10 people on Monday. Early closures:All restaurants, bars, gyms, recreational facilities, and personal services must close at 10 p.m. Sunday – Thursday and at 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Retail establishments must actively ask customers not wearing masks to do so immediately, or vacate the store. A maximum of two spectators for any athlete younger than 18 will be allowed. Beginning August 6 from 5:00 -7:00 pm, and continuing on the first Thursday of each month, the East Bay Chamber will be promoting participating local businesses to help bring foot traffic back into their stores and restaurants and show the community that they are safely open and ready for business. Participating businesses might run specials or have discounted items available for shoppers on the First Thursdays.
