Read More Alfred Beckstrom, AHS Class of 2014, obtained his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Gannon University in Erie, PA in May 2018. After graduation, Alfredaccepted a Product Engineer position in Cleveland with Fives North American Combustion, Inc., a world leader in industrial high combustion. Alfred provides product engineering support to sales, systems and manufacturing. In high school, Alfred participated in the Excel TECC CADD-Engineering Program held at that time at Lakeland Community College, and was a member of the first Aurora High School Robotics team that placed at the Institute of Navigation Mini-Urban Challenge Regionals held in Dayton, OH and sixth at the National competition held at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. While at Gannon, Alfred co-led spring break service trips to KY, DE and VA and recently volunteered his time to setup the 3D printer at Harmon School. Byron Spruell, an Aurora Alumni, was namedPresident ofLeague Operations for the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 2016. Spruell,who graduated from AHS in 1983, was named Homecoming King and was Co-Valedictorian of his class. He was active in basketball and football earning All CVC First Team recognition for football and receiving the US Army Scholar Athlete Award for Portage County. He was named as anAurora High School Distinguished Alumni in 2001. Spruell graduated from the University of Notre Damewith a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Prior to being named the NBA President of League Operations, Spruell spent 20 years as the Vice Chairman, Central Region Market Leader at Deloitte LLP. Former Aurora Schools Superintendent Russ Bennett began attending the Aurora Schools when he was in 2nd grade. He then pursued a career in the field of education and became a teacher, coach, principal and later superintendent in the Aurora City Schools. After 31 years spent in the district, Bennett moved on to accept a leadership position with the Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County as the District Leadership Director in 2015. Bennett was instrumental in leading the district to the highest educational rankson local, state and national levels. Tom Curtis, an AHS alumni from the Class of 1966, was a Class All-Ohio quarterback for the high school football team. He went on to attend the University of Michigan where he quarterbacked the all-freshman team. Curtis was then moved to the position of safety and played from 1967-69. He broke the University of Michigan s record for interceptions in a game, season and career with none of them being broken. He also had a career total of 431 return yards off of interceptions that broke the NCAA record set in the 1940 s.After college, Curtis was drafted in the 14th round by the Baltimore Colts during the 1970 NFL Draft. He played for the Colts from 1970-71 which included their Super Bowl winning team. Curtis went on to play for the Los Angeles Rams and the Miami Dolphins before retiring in 1973. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2005. In the Land of 10 s Top 100 Big Ten football players of the last 100 years, Curtis ranks at #90.Curtis owns one of the nation s largest privately owned publishing companies, Curtis Publishing Company which publishes Steelers Digest and River Cities Gazette. Kaley Ann Voorhees, an Aurora High School 2012 graduate, began her Broadway career in 2014 playing the coveted alternate role of Christine Daaein the Phantom of the Opera. She just recently starred in the Hal Prince Broadway musical Prince of Broadway where she took on the roles of Maria in West Side Story, Magnolia in Showboat, Young Phyllis in Follies and Amy in Company. She previously appeared in the Aurora High School production Annie Get Your Gun as the character Annie Oakley. Caitlin Houlahan, a graduate of Aurora High School (2009) and Baldwin Wallace University (2014), made her Broadway debut in October of 2016. She has earned a Cleveland Critics Circle Award for Best Actress in a Musical in the title role of Carrie at the Beck Center. She portrayed the waitress Dawn in the play Waitress.Her stage credits includeBridges of Madison County, Parade, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Theory of RelativityandCarrie. She made her television debut in NBC sPeter Pan Live!as Jane. Houlihan can be seen in the final season of HBO sGirls. Notre Dame Cathedral Latin Social Studies Department ChairpersonMolly Schneider(nee Kudley), who graduated from Aurora High School in 2002, has been named one of 53 teachers in the entire country and the only one from Ohio to win the prestigious and highly competitive James Madison Foundation Memorial Fellowship.Madison Memorial Fellowships recognize promising and distinguished teachers by enhancing their knowledge of the origins and development of American constitutional government so that they can take the lead in educating secondary school students about our nation s constitutional heritage. Schneider s Madison Fellowship includes a stipend of $24,000 to be used toward an advanced degree focused on the history and principles of the United States Constitution. She and other fellows will also participate in a four-week institute on the U.S. Constitution at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. next summer.Schneider is the daughter of Barb and John Kudley of Aurora, Ohio and lives with her husband Matt in the Four Seasons development along with their son Ben who will be starting Kindergarten in the fall. Aurora Alumni (2015) Pavel Galchenko and Yohann Samarasinghe cofounded RVS Rubber Solutions, a company that offers high-tech B2B rubber solutions using a proprietary RVS technology to efficiently source rubber base material from would be waste tire components. The refinement process for recycling rubber in industrial environments has the potential to eliminate waste of more than 100 million pounds of tires annually. Galchenko attends Case Western Reserve University majoring in Biochemistry and Samarasinghe is studying Nanoengineering at the University of California San Diego.In 2016, RSV Rubber Solutions won the Northeast Ohio [M]SPIRE entrepreneur pitch competition, which is held exclusively for product-focused startups and small manufacturers, earning them $60,000. In 2017, RSV Rubber Solutions was among 36 finalists chosen worldwide to compete in an international competition organized by the Singapore Management University s Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Earlier in 2017, RSV Rubber Solutions won $50,000 at the U.S. Department of Energy s Cleantech University competition.
