TechXcite:New Module In this TechXcite: Discover Engineering module participants will use K'NEX to construct and evaluate several different kinds of cars that have different sources of power. click here The TechXcite curriculum is discovery-based. The instructor's role is to guide the creativity of participating youth as they move through the activities. There is a scripted procedure provided for instructors as well as suggestions for guiding engineering design solutions to open-ended exploration as students consider the many ways to solve the design problems. Many states have found that 4-H Afterschool staff who are uncomfortable with open-ended, discovery-based engineering design benefit greatly by assistance from experienced instructors of a given module. Once an instructor has taught 2-3 modules with the assistance of an experienced instructor, the discomfort tends to diminish as confidence in the discovery process is acquired. In most of the design problems, there is no "one right answer," and youth must think critically about solving the problem. This often leads to an iterative process in which the project solution is improved each time a new approach is taken. This is how real engineering works. TechXcite is an after-school engineering curriculum developed jointly by 4-H and Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering. This curriculum was developed as part of a National Science Foundation sponsored program and is utilized in 4-H supported after-school programs across the country. April 17, 2012 - Dr. Klenk presented "Partnering with The Pratt School of Engineering to Utilize STEM Curriculum in Your After-School Program" at the North Carolina Center for Afterschool Program's annual Synergy conference for after-school providers. March 20, 2012 - Dr. Klenk and Jeff Davis recorded a webinar describing how to access TechXcite materials for the California AfterSchool Network.
