Life is a Verb Camp is a dream come true for me. Opening space for magic to happen for a small community of fellow travelers. Recognizing that we grown-ups also desperately need play, surprise, magic, art, story, and music in our lives.

Camp is a place where people of all walks of life come together to explore what it means to be fully human and what it means to live life fully, as an active and not a passive, verb. To live, and live fully. To love, and love well. To let go, and let go deeply.

At Camp, we are excellent to one another. We open space for real conversations about things that matter. We hold each other up. We are inclusive. We bring out the best in one another. We listen deeply. We value the environment and seek to make Camp as green as we can. We become good friends who both challenge and support one another far beyond the Camp weekend.

I hope youll consider joining us for this transformative weekend in 2020 when well celebrate the 8th year of Camp. Limited to 150 Campers so we can truly enjoy the joys and gifts of community.

About Mahogany L. Browne

Mahogany L. Browne was born in Oakland, California but has been based in Brooklyn, NY for over 15 years. A strong, black woman, Browne is unapologetic in her work as a spoken word poet, author, and activist. She uses her personal experience with addiction, racism, sexism, and oppression to inspire her own brand of shameless, authentic work. Browne’s spoken word performances create a platform through poetry for women and girls to feel empowered and heard.

In the beginning, encouragement was elusive for Browne. During a high school honors English class, she was told not to write poetry, and dropped out the next semester. Finding the strength to persevere, the poet went on to graduate from the MFA Writing and Activism program at Pratt Institute. Browne’s talent and personal struggles have proved to make her success today proof of her undeniable persistence.

Featured in the PBS NewsHour segment, Brief But Spectacular, Browne read her poem “Black Girl Magic” about the struggles facing African-American women and girls in modern society. She has been featured in HBO’s Brave New Voices as the artistic director at Urban Word NYC. Browne is the publisher of Penmanship Books, curator of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe Friday Night Slam, founder of the Women Writers of Color Reading Room, and the director of Black Lives Matter at Pratt Institute.

A Cave Canem fellow and Agnes Gund Fund Recipient Browne has published several poetry collections and books, including Black Girl Magic, Kissing Caskets, Redbone, and Dear Twitter: Love Letters Hashed Out Online. She has also released five LPs, including a live album, Sheroshima. Her work has appeared in Pluck, The Manhattanville Review, Muzzle, and others.

Mornings at Camp begin (if you wish) with your choice of Becoming Bendy session, from 7-7:50am. We also offer Becoming Bendy classes from 5-5:50pm to help end your day with movement.

In the past, we have had yoga, dance, and tai chi classes, among others.

Focus Sessions

These 15-minute sessions focus the Camp community on conversations that matter around Courage, Creativity, Community, and Compassion. Our Focus talks for 2020 will be announced in February 2020.

In 2019, we heard these stories, among others:

Healing Despair One Magazine At a Time, Scissors Optional by Elizabeth McEntee

How does a young adult struggling with undiagnosed unipolar depression and suicidal despair begin to heal using glue, scissors and French Vogue? In this talk I will share stories of my life during the mid 1980s when I cobbled together a plan to heal my despair by listening to my intuition, embracing failure and cutting up a lot of magazines. My intent in sharing these stories is to entertain and inspire others. Elizabeth McEntee is an artist, writer, teacher, student, mystic as well as a curator of curiosities. She loves collecting and crafting stories that offer hope, connection, whimsy and humor.

Metamorphosis:  What I Learned From a Giant Silk Moth by Lisa Rough

I’d like to tell a story of when I found a chubby green caterpillar on my driveway and brought it home and put it in a jar. I became obsessed, watching it change, tending to it night and day, and learning everything I could about what it might become. Little did I know that I would also learn to navigate the changes in my own life, and to be present within each phase of metamorphosis. Lisa Rough is a writer, visionary artist, and humble mama who considers her rather ordinary life to be an extraordinary, never-ending work in progress. In between composing a memoir, fiddling with woodburner pens and oil pastels, and learning how to breathe into an empty nest, she spends her time studying and raising giant silk moths, and thereby remembering what really matters.

The Powerful Presence of Unconditional Love by Lille Diane

Lille Diane experienced the devastation words have on a child raised in an abusive home.  With no intervention or help when the abuse turned physical and sexual, Lille became a repeat runaway. Facing 5 years in prison at age 16, Lille fought back with a public defender until she was granted one last chance in a foster home. Learn how one woman’s words and powerful presence became the unexpected present Lille opened one fateful day.

Finding Light in the Darkness of Grief by Joshua Durst

A personal reflection on the journey through grief and the lessons learned along the way with an emphasis on how light and love can be found in the deepest place of darkness. Real life strategies and experiences will be explored as part of this presentation. Joshua Durst is a father, partner, writer, quilt artist, and grief traveler.

Leaning into our Truth in the White Privilege/Racial Equity Narrative by Kathy Krahenbuhl

We go into racial equity activism work with good intentions about helping people. Learning about our own journeys and examining the racism in them helps us to pinpoint where personal bigotry drops away, but systemic and institutional racism stand strong.  It is looking at our connect to those systems and ways to interrupt the racism that is built into them that can aid us in pushing our uncomfortable (but necessary) edge and move forward. Kathy Krahenbuhl earned her BA in African and African American Studies from the Univ. of North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Dec. 15, 2013 (almost 40 years exactly from high school graduation).  She has lived in Durham, North Carolina since 1984, and has been engaged in Racial Equity/White Privilege work for close to two decades.

Yes, You Too Can Take GREAT Photos with a CellPhone Camera! with Bo Mackison

I used to haul bags of camera equipment wherever I went. Then three things happened. 1.) I lugged all of my gear to Europe. 2.) My fancy camera failed on the very first day. 3.) I discovered the joy of shooting only with the camera that I had in my back pocket my cellphone camera. By trips end I made the decision to retire my big camera. Now I’m practicing big-time photography with my iPhone camera. With a few tips and a handy acronymthat I’ll teach in the workshopeven beginning photographers can create stunning landscapes, close-ups, and portraits. (All cell phone cameras are suitable for this photography practice.) Bo Mackison is an artist, poet, photographer, certified Kaisen-Muse creativity coach, Nalanda Miksang Photography Instructor, hands-on workshop presenter, and a woman who has spent her adult life surviving and thriving with the help of the creative practices she now shares with others. She is the founder of Contemplative Creatives Journey, an Online Seasonal Workshop.

Building Your Best Self (Portrait) with Jeanne d’Orleans

Who do you want to see in the mirror? Lets create your best self (portrait). Bring a 5”x7” close up of your face. You will use this to build your own self portrait. We will play with mixed media to represent your hair, your aura, your presence. Supplies will be provided, but bring any mixed media tools you favor. When Jeanne d’Orleans was a child, I played with crayons, string and glue, paints, markers, glitter and bubbles. She still does.

Wake Up To Your Dream with Lisa Honold

Have you ever been frightened by a dream, then wondered what it meant? Our dreams hold powerful messages from the subconscious that we can decode and bring into our waking hours. Lisa is a certified life coach and parent educator who helps keep kids safe online and her word of the year is Unpush, defined as to let go of struggling through situations and instead, set an intention and say yes to aligned opportunities.

In This Moment:  Portable Presence with Penny Arrowood

What does it take to establish a creative practice?  Pen or pencil, a vessel for the collection of your thoughts, and the willingness to stand still for a moment each day.  Lao Tzu declared, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Our first step will be the creation of a handy, hand-made book to capture those moments.  We will explore accessible ways to establish a practice of mindfulness, one poetic moment at a time. Penny Arrowood is an artist and poet residing among the whispering pines of eastern NC.  She navigates her days living her love of paper and capturing the present in handfuls of Haiku.

The Opus: Using the Alchemical Process to Make 7 New Poems in 90 Minutes (no kidding) with Laura Hope-Gill

It’s ancient and strange enough to have been translated and practiced by Sir Isaac Newton and explored in poems by Lao Tse. Carl Jung says it is the very stuff of the Bible, and Keats, Shelley, Yeats, and Kinnell (and many more) reference it in their poems. Some sources even say this is what Mary Magdalene taught Jesus in Egypt. So, let’s join this wild bunch and do some alchemy. This quick descent into the “opus contra natura” will yield you seven new poems and a process for making poems (and healing the soul of the world) for the rest of your life. Bring your notebook and pen. Poetry brings the crucibles and fire. Laura Hope-Gill directs the Thomas Wolfe Center for Narrative at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Asheville, NC, where she also directs a multicultural thoughtfulness festival, Asheville Wordfest. She is an NC Arts Fellow for her writings on deafness and has published one collection of poems, The Soul Tree (Grateful Steps 2008) and two architectural histories (Look Up Asheville I and II (Grateful Steps 2010,2011).

Accessibility in the Arts with Gaelynn Lea

3-4:30pm One of our keynote speakers from 2018 wanted to come back to Camp and offer this look at accessibility in the arts from her perspective as an artist with a disability. You’ll learn about the barriers to participation in the arts for people with disabilities, as well as solutions. Gaelynn Lea is a musician who won the 2016 NPR Tiny Desk Concert Contest. She was a keynote speaker at Camp 2018 and will perform for us again in 2019.

Story as Activism with Omkari Williams

You have a story to share, one that will connect with others and help bring more justice to this fractured world. The only problem is you dont know where to start. You will create a blueprint for your unique way of advocating for change using story as your foundational tool. Youll  leave with a plan that you can start implementing immediately, one that draws on your strengths and mitigates your weaknesses.

Omkari Williams began her professional life as an actor and now is a speaker and life/creativity coach. Passionate about the power of story she works with her clients to use story as a tool to live their daily lives with focus, meaning, and passion.

Embodied Learning About Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice with Patti Digh

You can only get so far in understanding diversity, inclusion, and social justice by talking about it. In this interactive session, Patti will lead Campers through her unique, experiential processes that enable you to dive beneath the surface of language to a sensory, embodied experience of privilege, dominant culture, inclusion, and more, creating learning that is deep, retrievable in “hot” moments, and has been called “life-changing.” Patti Digh has done social justice work for 30+ years, and is the founder of The School of Inclusion + Activism as well as Life is a Verb Camp.

In this workshop, we will use art and writing processes to recognize and capture those individual stories of your life.

The Opus: Using the Alchemical Process to Make 7 New Poems in 90 Minutes (no kidding) with Laura Hope-Gill

Building Your Best Self (Portrait) with Jeanne d’Orleans

We will play with mixed media to represent your hair, your aura, your presence. Supplies will be provided, but bring any mixed media tools you favor. When Jeanne d’Orleans was a child, I played with crayons, string and glue, paints, markers, glitter and bubbles. She still does.

Restorative Yoga Restorative Yoga, with Stacey Beth Shulman

7-8am on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings

Restorative yoga is a practice that encourages participants to release muscle tension and activate the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest). the long, supported holds allow the nervous system to recalibrate and muscles to soften, resulting in deep relaxation and feelings of wellbeing.

Restorative yoga is deeply healing on so many levels. On the physical plane, Restorative yoga can help to lower blood pressure, increase the transfer of oxygen from cell to cell, and boost the immune system. This practice can also calm the nervous system, increase the bodys healing capacity, and help to develop compassion for self and others.

This gentle style of yoga combines simple breathwork, centering meditation, and supported yoga postures to calm your mind and soothe your soul. This is an all-levels class. Absolute Beginners as well as those with More Yoga Experience are most welcome. Bring your yoga mat or a towel to practice on, and a blanket and/or pillow if youd like.

Participants will have an opportunity to experience restorative yoga, to learn breathing techniques that can calm the nervous system, and discover restorative yoga poses they can do at home.

Stacey Beth Shulman, E-RYT 500 has been a full time yoga teacher for more than 7 years. She specializes in Restorative and Trauma Sensitive yoga modalities. Staceys mission is to bring the gift of body awareness to people of all shapes, sizes, abilities, and genders through gentle movement and attention to breath. Nurture: Self and Others Nuture: Self and Others

We cannot give what we do not have, and we will only give what we do have. We can learn how to nurture ourselves so that we can nurture others. We must put on our own oxygen masks first, and yoga is a great way to do that!!!!! (endless exclamation points!!!!)

Gentle yoga with stretching and breathing techniques, ending in a guided meditation that will help practitioners feel grounded as they move about their day or evening at camp.

Campers will gain appreciation for their bodies, freer minds, and the grounding needed to go out and heal others.

Faculty to be announced. Camp Dance: The Healing Power of Movement Camp Dance: The Healing Power of Movement, with Lila Danielle

7-8am on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings

Begin your morning with movement, music and bit of inspiration for the day. This kind of dance is about making it up as you go. This kind of dance provides an opportunity to dance how you feel, not how you think. This kind of dance is an embodied experience of self-expression, discovery and delight. Whee!

Physical movement and creative expression are essential to ones health and well-being. Campers will get a bit of exercise, a delightful sense of ones own creativity, and a feeling of deep connection to self and with others.

Our bodies are both wisdom-keepers and wound-vessels. When the body moves, everything else inside is given an opportunity to move as well (thoughts, feelings, emotions) provided that a safe space has been created in which to do so. Camp Dance will offer a chance for participants to move and be moved in a variety of ways that will foster a palpable healing presence in oneself and in the space we dance in.

Lila Danielle dances and writes in Maui, Hawaii. She facilitates movement-based events and retreats and enjoys creating meaningful and memorable experiences for guests at her bed and breakfast. Tai Chi Tai Chi with Clint Jones

5-6pm on Friday and Saturday evenings

Details to come. What set Camp apart from any other gathering Ive attended was that in addition to great sessions, the attendees created an atmosphere of respect, honesty, trust, and vulnerability Id never encountered before. It was raw, in the best way possible. I came away with a deeper appreciation of people and made new friendships Im happy to say are flourishing. I look forward to returning to Camp every year. Jeff Harbert

Camp was seeing myself again through brand new eyes. The entire experience interrupted how I usually see my self, and with that fresh perspective, a new level of me unfolded. I found words that had been locked in deep chambers tumbling out onto pages. I found courage that had been brewing stepping out into the light. I found a brand new way to see myself in the world. And surrounding all of that, I found a tribe who wanted nothing but to witness me, all of me. Shannon Loucks

Camp was memorable so many wonderful people gathered together who were courageous and creative. We shared a desire to just be open and honest, and everyone respected that. It opened up space for us to learn, stretch, try new things, and have a lot of fun in the process!  I made so many friends from all over the country (and world!) that weekend, and the connection and sharing continues to this day. Franky McArthur

Connection with a community of the most generous, giving, caring, and supportive individuals was the gift I took home with me from Camp last year. Every single person there mattered. I’ve never experienced a more encouraging, accepting, open, environment and can’t wait to go back and do it all over again! Caren Browning Albers
