The Hidden Markov Model Toolkit (HTK) is a portable toolkit forbuilding and manipulating hidden Markov models. HTK is primarily usedfor speech recognition research although it has been used for numerousother applications including research into speech synthesis, characterrecognition and DNA sequencing. HTK is in use at hundreds of sitesworldwide.HTK consists of a set of library modules and tools available in Csource form. The tools provide sophisticated facilities for speechanalysis, HMM training, testing and results analysis. The softwaresupports HMMs using both continuous density mixture Gaussians anddiscrete distributions and can be used to build complex HMM systems.The HTK release contains extensive documentation and examples.HTK was originally developed at the Machine Intelligence Laboratory (formerly known as the Speech Vision and Robotics Group) of the Cambridge University Engineering Department (CUED)where it has been used to build CUED's large vocabulary speechrecognition systems (see CUED HTK LVR).In 1993 Entropic Research Laboratory Inc. acquired the rights to sellHTK and the development of HTK was fully transferred to Entropic in1995 when the Entropic Cambridge Research Laboratory Ltd wasestablished. HTK was sold by Entropic until 1999 when Microsoft boughtEntropic. Microsoft has now licensed HTK back to CUED and is providingsupport so that CUED can redistribute HTK and provide developmentsupport via the HTK3 web site. Only a simple build procedure is included which will require some manual configuration. A more automatic configuration will be available in future as well as support for other platforms. Compilation options include builds for standard CPU; use with Intel MKL libraries; and use with NVIDIA GPUs.HTK 3.5 also includes a new version of the HTKBook. This is an alpha version of the book and so is in some places incomplete. The HTKBook for HTK 3.5 includes documentation of the new features of HTK including the new tools for acoustic modelling with neural networks and use of recurrent neural network language models. The book also includes extended tutorial information for using the new HTK features, and includes a new section of tutorial examples using the Resource Management task that illustrate new (and old) functionality.
