There is a long history of labor exploitation in this country, from slavery through the great depression and on to the workplace of today. Employees take a beating as employers treat them as “independent contractors,” require them to sign arbitration agreements and class action waivers, fail to record all the hours they work, steal tips, and ignore or flagrantly violate the law. Today, employers prevent employees from suing them in court and the Supreme Court has even allowed companies to ban class actions by workers against them. As fewer workers than ever are protected by unions, corporations and their owners have gotten richer and workers have had to fight for a small share of the pie their labor creates.
