Description:

Although wild birds are hosts to numerous species of gammacoronaviruses and deltacoronaviruses, some of which infect domestic birds or are able to spill-over into mammals, we reveal the limitations to our current understanding of their diversity, ecology and evolution. Miramistin is a topical antiseptic that was developed within a framework of the Soviet Union Cold War Space Program; miramistin has a broad antimicrobial action, including activity against biofilms and a clinical profile showing good tolerability. This review contrasts the mechanism and evolution of the superficially similar – yet entirely unrelated – “flagella" in microbes from all three domains of life: archaeal archaella, bacterial flagella and eukaryotic cilia. The ecological success of the marine cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus, the most abundant photosynthetic organism on Earth, in its nutrient-poor environment has been linked to a streamlined genome and a small number of regulatory proteins supplemented by regulatory riboswitches and dozens of regulatory small RNAs, whose functional characterization continues to provide surprising insights. H7 avian influenza virus causes infections in birds and mammals and is of pandemic concern; our review brings together data from the ecology, veterinary and human health points of view and demonstrates the importance of ‘One Heath’ in the long-term management of this virus. Thematic Issues Archaea Whether interested in the evolution of life, the adaptations that allow organisms to thrive in extreme environments, global carbon and nitrogen cycles, or the influence of the microbiome on human health, one must first gain a solid understanding of the archaea.Browse issue|More Thematic Issues Antimicrobial Therapy Read a Thematic Issue from FEMS Microbiology Reviewswhich discusses the issues associated with antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance.Browse issue|More Thematic Issues Signals to Sociality Read a Thematic Issue from FEMS Microbiology Reviewswhich frames the important question of how microbes communicate and why it’s so important.Browse issue|More Thematic Issues Virtual Special Issues Six Key Topics We are very pleased to offer a selection of articles from six key areas of microbiology.
