Welcome Welcome to the Biographia Evangelica information board! The aim of this presentation is to introduce to you Christian men and women from Church History who I believe have been given a hard time by the modern evangelical and not-so-evangelical media. I need only mention here Hannah More who certainly was far more than a mere Bluestocking and whose mighty Christian testimony moved literally millions to interest themselves in the things of God. Here I can also mention John Gill who contrary to the slur placed upon him of being the Champion of Antinomians and as evangelistic as a gate-post, was a fine preacher, pastor, evangelist and winner of souls par excellence. So, too, he is labelled as a Supralapsarian and Hyper, though he is far more Sublapsarian than Calvin himself. One can also add to this list William Romaine, Augustus Toplady, Robert Traill, James Hervey, William Huntington and all those of like calibre who are now frowned on by our Reformed Establishment, though they were pillars of the faith and men who moved mountains in their day. A second aim of this web site is to introduce readers to some of God’s servants who, though convinced, sturdy Christians, allowed their zeal in God’s Providence to lead them from Gospel truths and also introduce teaching that has proved highly damaging to the Church of Christ. Here it will suffice to mention Dutch Arminian Hugo Grotius, American New England Divinity pioneer Joseph Bellamy and his English counterpart and imitator Andrew Fuller. Of modern men who have led many astray, I would add John Murray of Westminster Seminary here, who insists that God has two conflicting wills and is unable to save those He wishes to save. Of course, the chance-philosopher and sceptic John Wesley must be added to the list and the whole range of modern Free Offer and Duty Faith enthusiasts who offer a watered down gospel to all based ultimately on common grace and natural theology. I call this modern aberration of the truth and perversion of the Good News to be preached to all in all its fullness ‘The Gospel of Deceit’. Visitors to this page might like to read my article of that name in which I name and deal with a number of these modern deceivers. My third endeavour is to examine the history of the Church from New Testament times, particularly in the now English-speaking world and strive to fill in details where research as been lacking or poor. Here I include the English roots of the Continental Reformation, the great periods of freedom from Rome’s iron grip during Edward III’s reign and the period of the Great Usurpation and Ejection 1643-1660, this latter period being still perhaps the most neglected period in Church History. My fourth and major aim is to inform my English-speaking brethren of the great personalities in their history who have long been left in the shadows in comparison to their Continental counterparts but whose ministry, outreach and teaching were enormously effective. Here I can mention Doctor Profundus Thomas Bradwardine, Bible translator Miles Coverdale and Martyr saint Hugh Latimer. The list of such names is very long and modern research is merely scratching on the surface of the great work of God done in Reformation times. However, I do not wish to neglect the great Continental Reformers such as Jan Hus, Ulrich Zwingli, Martin Bucer and Henry Bullinger, men of God without whom Calvin would have perhaps never have been won over by Calvinism and would certainly not have been enabled to write his Institutes. Bucer, especially, whom older writers called the Father of Calvinism, is most undeservedly neglected today. I am not a denominational man and deplore the commonly held conception that ‘the right’ church organisation and succession are essential to salvation. The church of which I am a member is, for me, the Body of Christ, though it has a denominational tag and is ‘mixed’ to a happily limited extent, in its membership. This church affords me the sweetest of fellowship, so I am content and do not grumble about its externals. I am thus free in my writings to praise where I can and criticise where I feel the need. I would thus ask my readers to bear with me. I may, at times, tread on their denominational toes, but at other times, they might even find me patting their denominational back! All the articles which feature on these pages are under the copyright of myself, the author, but gradually articles from other pens will be included if they are within the aims outlined above.
