Description:

Welcome to STORRE: Stirling Online Research RepositorySTORRE holds a continually growing collection of the full text of the research outputs of University of Stirling authors. It includes published journal articles, conference papers, book chapters, working papers, etc. As a result of the University policy encouraging open access, the repository will continue to develop as an important source of free full text access to Stirling's research.STORRE also holds the full text of all University of Stirling research theses from September 2006 onwards; covering PhDs, Masters of Philosophy and Masters by Research plus Professional Higher Degrees by Research. A small collection of our older theses is also included, and is continually added to, due to our involvement in the British Library's EThOS service. Biggs TEG, Brussaard CPD, Evans C, Venables HJ Pond DW (2020) Plasticity in dormancy behaviour of Calanoides acutus in Antarctic coastal waters. Ices Journal of Marine Science, 77 (5), pp. 1738-1751. https: doi.org 10.1093 icesjms fsaa042 See Copepods that enter dormancy, such as Calanoides acutus, are key primary consumers in Southern Ocean food webs where they convert a portion of the seasonal phytoplankton biomass into a longer-term energetic and physiological resource as wax ester (WE) reserves. We studied the seasonal abundance and lipid profiles of pre-adult and adult C. acutus in relation to phytoplankton dynamics on the Western Antarctic Peninsula. Initiation of dormancy occurred when WE unsaturation was relatively high, a... No.: e184. https: doi.org 10.1111 csp2.184 See Large carnivores often impact human livelihoods and well‐being. Previous research has mostly focused on the negative impacts of large carnivores on human well‐being but has rarely considered the positive aspects of living with large carnivores. In particular, we know very little on people s direct experiences with large carnivores like personal encounters and on people s awareness and tolerance toward their exposure to large carnivores. Here, we focus on the wolf (Canis lupus), and report on ... Alharbi SAH, Button K, Zhang L, O Shea KJ, Fasolt V, Lee AJ, DeBruine LM Jones BC (2020) Are affective factors related to individual differences in facial expression recognition?: Affective factors and facial expressions. Royal Society Open Science, 7 (9), Art. No.: 190699. https: doi.org 10.1098 rsos.190699 See Evidence that affective factors (e.g. anxiety, depression, affect) are significantly related to individual differences in emotion recognition is mixed. Palermo et al. (Palermo et al. 2018 J. Exp. Psychol. Hum. Percept. Perform.44, 503–517) reported that individuals who scored lower in anxiety performed significantly better on two measures of facial-expression recognition (emotion-matching and emotion-labelling tasks), but not a third measure (the multimodal emotion recognition test). By contr... Dixson BJW Lee AJ (2020) Cross-Cultural Variation in Men s Beardedness. Adaptive Human Behavior and Physiology, 6 (4), p. 490–500. https: doi.org 10.1007 s40750-020-00150-4 See Objectives To test whether cross-cultural variation in men’s facial hair conforms to patterns predicted by processes of inter-sexual and intra-sexual selection. Methods Data were taken from the PEW Research Center’s World’s Muslims’ project that collected information from 14,032 men from 25 countries. An Independent Factor Analysis was used to analyse how suites of demographic factors predict men’s beardedness. Results Analyses replicated those from past research using the PEW data, showing... Trends in Organized Crime. https: doi.org 10.1007 s12117-020-09393-9 See In the digital age, space has become increasingly structured by the circuitry of global capital, communications and commodities. This ‘network society’ splinters and fragments territorial space according to the hidden logic of networked global capital; with successful criminal entrepreneurs connecting bases in low-risk, controllable territories with high-profit markets. Drawing on a recent, large-scale study of organised crime in Scotland, in this paper we elaborate the relationship between p...
