Deep In A Dream - Sheep Meadow - 2006-2016
“Deep In A Dream – Sheep Meadow” – 2006-2016
I never could relate to contrived portraiture, but I desperately wanted to find a way to capture people on film and in print with the perfection of studio shots.
My intention with this project was to capture people in what I considered to be perfect unassuming poses (poses that could never be posed). I shot all of the images very close to the subjects while they were sunbathing or sleeping in Central Park’s Sheep Meadow (usually only a few feet away) and would simply wait for the moment when the subject appeared to completely surrender to their environment. Not having the luxury of communication with the subject, I was forced to be extremely patient in order to obtain the results I was hoping for.
I hand make gold toned silver gelatin prints for all of the images where the surrounding grass is severely "burnt in" to isolate, and give the look of suspension to the subject. The majority of the images were created in central park’s sheep meadow, while a few were created in other small parks in the city.

“Deep In A Dream – Sheep Meadow-Verticals” – 2014-2017
In 2014 I began capturing individuals and couples laying in Central Park's Sheep Meadow and began printing them vertically and backwards. This seemed to heighten the mood of the subject, creating an almost anti-gravity detachment &surrender from chaos of the surrounding city.

“Signals Crossed”-2014-2016-
is a portfolio that attempts to explore the phenomenon and effect of the proliferation of animated LED billboards that are currently blanketing New York City. Using moderately long exposures to capture the hidden, chaotic, and, at times, beautiful patterns that occur in between and during the animated advertisements, was my attempt to display these patterns as a true analogue for the overstimulation that the digital age is having on the collective thought process. The end result is the intending ads melting away, and what remains, is a mirror of its effect on the viewer.

I set out to document the park at its most vacant, isolating, and at times, haunting moments. The park appears to go through a period of metamorphosis during those late night/early morning hours, and I was determined to capture it.

The Arches & Tunnels that are scattered across Central Park have acted as a shelter for me over the past 10 years while working on my "Deep In A Dream-Central Park" series. I would take apart my cameras, wait for the light to cooperate, and seek shelter from inclement weather in them. These arches and tunnels have become like homes,and have always given me the second wind to head back out into those late lonely nights and early mornings.

The images were predominantly shot on the Funtown and Casino Piers in Seaside Park & Seaside Heights New Jersey. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy rolled in and completely destroyed both piers. The landscape was forever altered. These images chronicle the final days of these Piers, as well as what remained of the piers after the hurricane.

I've been documenting these small New Jersey coastal/amusement towns for the past 15 years now -"Afterlife 1" and "Afterlife 2"
I started the "Afterlife 3" series in late winter/early spring-2020 and worked on this series all through the virus when everything was shut down and when these towns/amusement piers started to try an open again this summer. I completed the series a few weeks ago- (just about one year after I started it).
These amusement towns/shore communities in New Jersey seemed like the last free places on earth. They took on an eerie (almost romantic) stance in the face of all the turmoil surrounding them. I found this time reminiscent of when I was younger and would hang out on the boardwalk all night. There was this beautiful mixture of danger, freedom, unpredictability, that gave way to an odd type of romance. There was always an undercurrent of sadness, but it was gorgeous type of sadness....
Like with most of my series these days, this series was all shot using a 5"x7" view camera, Black and white film developed in pyro, and I handmake the final prints as split toned(Iron, Selenium, Bleached/Selenium) & tinted gelatin silver. I still do all the work myself.

The Pull - Inverted Seascapes-2015-2018
I have always been fascinated by the the similarities between movement of the sky and the movement of the ocean(the pull of tides and the pull of the atmosphere). In this portfolio I've simply printed the images the way the they appear on the ground glass of my 5x7 camera-inverted and backwards. I found it amazing how visually disroentating the landscape becomes. The ocean became a roiling sky - "the pull of the ocean surrenders to the pull of the sky"
As a result of the ocean being inverted It takes on a completely new shape. I even see mountain/landscape abstractions and blowing brush. The sea also seems to become the land.
All of the images were shot with a 5"x7" camera, black and white film developed in pyro, and I'm hand making up to 44"x60"gold toned gelatin silver prints.

Over the past sixteen years I’ve spent the majority of my late nights and early mornings in Hotel Lobbies throughout Manhattan. Throughout those sleepless nights I was always taken by how that environment seemed to exist in a constant – no past, no present, no future state. When the guests retired, I was left alone to experience the intimate nature of these places. This portfolio documents those long nights.
The majority of these images were taken in the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, which has subsequently been sold, and closed to make way for condominiums. It will never be the way it was……..

While almost none of these phones still function, there is subtle proof of life inside each one. In Parting-Waldorf Nights-2004-2017
Most of the images were shotinthe late evening at the Waldorf Astoria where I spent many of my nights for the past 15 years(until is closed in 2017). I built a series of filters(basically sanded glass) for my camera to achieve that pictorialism look. All of the images are printed as 11”x14” toned gelatin silver prints.
The Waldorf Astoria was s strange and calming place that seemed to exist in it’s own world, not affected or guided by what was happening outside it’s door.
These images turned out to be a long goodbye to a time and place that will probably never return to New York City again.

Unfledged Architecture is a portfolio that documents the lone beach, and bayfront jungle gyms that are scattered along the New Jersey coastline. All of the images were captured in different shore communities during their off season. The portfolio attempts to contribute to the long line of pure architectural photography. Seeing these shapes on my ground glass of my 5"x7" camera, reinvigorated in me the excitement of seeing the unfledged &overlooked.

"Seeing the black dog"is a saying truck drivers use to describe hallucinations that occur as a result of sleep deprivation during cross country runs. When they see the "black dogs" scampering across the highway they know to pull over and get some sleep. The moment they make that decision is when I sneek up to their trucks while they're in the cabs sleeping and capture the moment the dogs melt away. All of the images were taken between the hours of 2am and 6am along the New Jersey Turnpike.

"A while back I was driving at around 3am and I pulled over because I was tired. I started to stare at the highway, and the white stones embedded in the pavement. The white stones were glowing from the headlights of the oncoming traffic. The Black "tar snake" patches were splicing through the glowing pavement(I actually became disoriented) and felt if I was viewing a crystal clear star lit sky-(tar snake galaxies)."

Magnetically Drawn (Magnetite Beach Abstractions)-2020-
After strong coastal storms (and excessive high tides) Magnetite(a highly magnetic mineral) can be elevated to the surface of the sand creating complex & abstract charcoal like drawings up and down the tide line on the beach. When I was younger, I always thought this was oil(or perhaps tar washing up on the beach after violent coastal storms). Learning years later it was Magnetite I became mesmerized by the different patterns that would occur on the sand after strong storms. It was nature's Etch A Sketch playing out directly under your feet.
All of the images are shot using a 5”x7” camera, and black and white film. They were all shot along the beach of Atlantic City, Ocean City, and Wildwood in New Jersey. The final prints are split toned & tinted gelatin silver.

Transmogrify#2 - Chewed Gum Sculptures-
All of the images are created from a single piece of chewed gum. I mold all the shapes by using my hand, tongue, and teeth ( the shapes are not created digitally). The sculptures range from anatomical organs, flowers, sea creatures, clothing, and abstractions. After I mold them, I mount them onto black plexi glass (or face mount them to regular glass), and photograph the sculpture using either a Creo scanner or a large format camera.

Hudson River Kármán Lines-2017
I always dreamt how amazing it would be to photograph(well composed photographs) of "The Kármán Line" - the altitude at which earth become space.
I was walking across the George Washington bridge one evening and the last rays of sun were creating a large shadow on the Hudson River caused by the surrounding cliffs, clouds, and bridge. The sun was reflecting off the bridge creating little stars on the surface of the water. I turned my camera upside down and saw what looked like my dream of what the the Kármán line would look like in person. The earth seemed to be surrendering to space all in the waters of the Hudson.
All of the images are simply inverted pictures of the Hudson River taking from atop the GWB during a special time of day when all these strange aberrations come together to create this effect.
No sky is photographed in any of the pictures, just the water of the hudson river. All of the images are single high contrast shots(no composites).

Borrowed time is an exploration into the moment the point of no return has been reached and subsequent freedom that follows. Using the visual of midflight plane failures was my attempt to show the moment that horror, relief, freedom, and graphic beauty all meet at once.

The New Romantic-2021
"The New Romantic"-
I found myself in the middle of nowhere a few times and realized that "nowhere" gave me the same feeling that New York City used to give me. I was driving 35 hours at a time. I missed the lamp posts in Central Park though, and everything they represented-(something romantic, something unforeseen. ) I drew a large mock-up drawing of a Central Park lamp post in the middle of the Badlands in western South Dakota. There was something melancholy and displaced about the drawing, but it also seemed necessary (almost as if everything the lamp post represents had to relocate a while or something would be lost forever).
It seemed like over the past few years the city turned its back on romanticism. Everything just got too controlled. I thank God that I still found a place that was wild, uncontrolled, and still romantic. I was on mountains surrounded by wolves, I was in valleys surrounded by rattle snakes, and was very excited to once again, not know, what was around the corner.
I cut out lamp posts from some of my nighttime Central Park negatives, and overlayed them on different images I took in Badlands, South Dakota, etc.. All these locations were hundreds of miles away from anything resembling a town/city. I still shot everything on large format black and white film, and the prints are split toned and tinted gelatin silver.

"The New Romantic ll"- Seascapes
A continuation a my “New Romantic” series using the Atlantic ocean as the backdrop. All of the seascapes are shot using a 5x7 camera, black and white film developed in pyro, and the lampposts are cut out of my Central Park negatives and then overlaid over the seascapes images.

Love Times-Zero -2000-2005
Love Times-Zero
In my early twenties I worked in a mailroom, and as a street messenger in New York City. I would wander the streets for days at a time, both confused and mesmerized by almost everything that came in front of my eyes. Carrying around an old Polaroid sx-70 camera, and boxes of Time-Zero film, I found the perfect tool to document both the romance, excitement and confusion of the city during the early 2000’s. The city was right on the brink of undergoing massive changes both esthetically and culturally. These photos were in retrospect a love letter, as well as a goodbye letter, to a city that would in many ways be unrecognizable 20 years later.
All of the images were shot using an old chrome Polaroid sx-70 camera & expired Time-Zer0 film. All of the manipulations are done by hand using wood carving tools on the original time-zero positive. The final prints are 20”x20” and 40”x40” pigment prints.
