Rapidly emerging as one of the world's premium regions for quality red wine. Labels such Vasse Felix, Voyager, Moss Wood and the emerging brands including Watershed live in the Margaret River Wine Region. Some wineries provide holiday accommodation near their Margaret River vineyards.

These are rich, earthy red wines that age very well - mainly cabernet sauvignon and shiraz. Margaret River only produce three per cent of Australia's wine grapes, but it produces 20% of Australia's premium wine, mostly by Margaret River region's boutique wine producers, which makes the region a good wine holiday destination near Perth.

A visit to this delightful region 2 1/2 hours south of Perth will reveal stunning coastline with the famous Caves Road running down the coast just inland from Dunsborough and Yallingup to the north, to the town of Margaret River 30 kilometres south.

Some of the prettiest cellar doors and restaurants are at the start of the Margaret River wine region near Dunsborough, where some delightful wines are now being made at wineries including Wise.

Home stay bed and breakfasts and hotels, near the centre of Margaret River town, arean ideal base to visit the spectacular region of Margaret River including neaby surf beaches, caves and winneries.

Lunch on the verandah at Amberley is also a must, looking out over the lovely scenery.

And nearby Happs Winery makes a range of preservative-free wines that are quite good - they may not quite be up there with the classic Margaret River reds, but at least you'll have a clear head in the morning.

For a good meal in Dunsborough, at the start of the Margaret River wine region, try the quirky Food Farmacy or Italian restaurant Assissi in the centre of Dunsborough.

And there's a new player in town as far as good food goes -Goanna Gallery on Hayes Road is now run by a former London chef who serves delicious breakfasts and lunches and is about to do dinner as well.

While you're here in wine and beach paradise, take a trip toYallingup Wood Fired Bread just out of town, a local institution with the best bread and fruit bread you'll ever taste. You'll find it on Biddles Road, near the famous Caves Road which links Dunsborough to Margaret River, with scores of well-known wineries on the way.

BOOK ACCOMMODATION NEAR MARGARET RIVER WINE REGION

As you head south towards the heavily-treed Margaret River region, you find a serious concentration of vineyards. The best four in our opinion around Margaret River for that combination of good wine, food and scenery are Voyager Estate, Watershed, Brookland Valley and Leeuwin Estate where they have the famous summer concerts.

Driving leisurely down Caves Road you'll find cellar doors every few kilometres, including Driftwood and the beautiful newLaurence Winery, with its golden "Lady of the Lake", otherwise known to locals as "chick on a stick."

Keep driving south towards Margaret River and you'll find more wineries with seriously good red wines that are among the world's best. The dominant varietals here are cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and even merlot.

If you're a lover of white wines, Margaret River chardonnay is also world famous and there aren't many rieslings better than Leeuwin Estate's Art Series riesling.

Wineries you'll find near Margaret River on or nearCaves Road include Pierro, Gralyn, Cullens, Evans and Tate and Vasse Felix with its award-winning wines.

For quality accommodation near Margaret River, try Merribrook Retreat or Yungarra Estate.

But if you want the best in coastal accommodation in the Margaret River wine region, stay near Dunsborough or Yallingup.

Cape Lodge is surrounded by vineyards and five star hotels, as is the new Empire Retreat. The historic Caves House in Yallingup provides gracious accommodation near Yallingup Beach from days gone by, recently modernised by Paul King's Seashells Group.

The beauty of Dunsborough is that it is on the opposite side of the finger of coast to Yallingup, so no matter which way the wind is blowing, you have a sheltered beach to luxuriate at.

Try Yallingup Beach or Smiths Beach in the morning before the sea breeze comes in, or in the afternoon, drive across the cape a few kilometres to Bunker Bay, where there's a very nice new resort and a beautiful sheltered beach. Also worth a look are Eagle Bay's pretty beaches and the delightful nearby beach at Point Picquet, which could be in the Caribbean.
