On The Ground At 2675 Feet ASL

March 14th, 2014concretebobNo comments

Weather is great up on the mountain. We’re on the ground at Amicalola Falls State Park Lodge northwest of Dawsonville, GA, waiting for Sean from Warrior Hike to arrive. This place is AWESOME!!!! The images on the website really do not do justice to the majesty. We’ve obtained clearance to cook outside and it looks like things are going our way.

We stopped in Durham on the way down and visited with the folks at RangerUp for a few minutes. As usual, they were very happy to see us, (or it may have been the sauce, but who cares), and presented us with a new t-shirt and a cool bumper sticker.

We’ll update things later tonight when Sean and CWTT get together for some strategizing. My main concern at this point is AC current. We don’t HAVE to have it, but it will make things simpler.

Happy New Year from CWTT-Mountains and Kayaks and White-water OH MY!!!!

December 28th, 2013concretebobNo comments

If the past year was any indication, 2014 should be more fun than mud wrestling with the Swedish Bikini Team. Well maybe not THAT much fun but I garontee it will be interesting.

We’ve teamed up with Warrior Hike to help them with their program that gives our returning Warriors the opportunity to ease back into civilian life by spending 6 months in the company of other Warriors hiking the Appalachian Trail.
Different people handle the mental effects of combat in different ways. Some can shut it off and never look back. It was just a job. Some cannot accomplish that as easily as it may seem. Warrior Hike puts the Warrior in a safe zone, without the day to day distractions we civilians have to endure. It gives them the time to readjust to normal life without having to deal with normal life. Its a good program. It does good things for our Warriors. CWTT will be in Georgia in March for the start of the Class of 2014 Warrior Hike Walk Off the War program. We’re going to make sure these men and women, who have already done more than their share, are starting off with full tummies and lots of carbs. We’ll be meeting them at the half way point (+/-) in Front Royal, VA in June and in September, well, I cannot wait to get back to Millinocket, Maine for the End of Trail celebration. All of these events will be fundraisers for Warrior Hike.

That was the mountains. Now the kayak and whitewater. We met the Chapter Leader of Team River Runner’s Ft Belvoir/Quantico chapter when we held our annual Patriots Day luncheon at Ft Belvoir. Sean McCarthy is former Marine, Viet Nam vet and completely dedicated to helping our wounded and veterans through the use of kayaking and adaptive water sports. TRR gives our wounded a chance to be active and hang with other vets with similar issues.
CWTT catered TRR/Ft Belvoir-Quantico’s Christmas partay earlier in December and we had a blast. Sean and his group are as serious about helping our wounded and veterans as CWTT. We’ll be providing lunch for a Regional Chapter meeting in February and I have no doubt that CWTT and TRR/Ft Belvoir-Quantico will be getting wet this year.

Cooking with the Troops and Warrior Hike At Trails End

This will be an annual event as long as Sean Gobin with Warrior Hike continues to provide our Warriors the opportunity to deal with the effects of combat. We will be in Georgia in March of 2014 to send them off. We will meet them again in Front Royal Va VFW Post 1860.

AAR in photographs is here courtesy of our newest volunteer Harrison Martin. Harrison is responsible for getting CWTT and Warrior Hike together.

Our Director of Communications has her own website and has posted some excellent background and a preliminary AAR. She assures us an in-depth AAR is forthcoming.

First a short video of the Warrior Hikers reaching the summit of Mt Kathadan on Friday 13 September 2013.

Susan also took some pictures

We had a great time serving BBQ and fried squash to the folks who dropped by. We raised some money for Warrior Hike and made some new friends.

Two days earler, we were on Ft Belvior at the SFAC of the 1st Warrior Transntion Brigade. We had a special guest drop by:

Updates on Pariots Day at Ft Belvoir; WarriorHike in Maine; NASCAR in RVA

September 5th, 2013concretebobNo comments

The annual Patriots Day lunch at Ft Belvoir for the wounded, caregivers, and families is set and ready to go. BRAVO ZULU to several NoVA resturants for stepping up and providing some great food for this very important event. I’ll have the names some time this week.
Warrior Hike End of Trail Celebration in Maine on 14 September is well on the way to being a go. American Legion Post 80 in Millinocket Maine is hosting the hikers and CWTT is bringing BBQ and honey dew vinewater as requested by several of the Marines. I’ll be posting from the road so stay tuned.
Its Race Week in #RVA and CWTT will have fresh hot homemade BBQ at the Azeala Flea Market. We’ll have information on how you can help CWTT with our mission. Stop by Friday evening after 1600 and all day Saturday and grab a BBQ. We’re at the corner of Azalea Avenue and RIchmond-Henrico Turnpike/Meadowbridge Rd/Carolina Ave just east of Wilkinson Rd. Plenty of parking and the people watching is nothing short of awesome. Come on by and hang out for a while.

Transitions and Changes-Notes From the New CEO

July 22nd, 2013concretebobNo comments

A famous man once said, “There is no constant but change.” I have no idea who said it, but I’m sure he’s famous, or at least should be.

There have been several changes in the make-up and overall purpose to Cooking with the Troops in the last 10 months. Some we fought and lost. C Blake Powers stepped down as Chairman and CEO to pursue other passions, including embedding with various military units and reporting on good food and good spirits all over the world. As a result, yours truly has taken over the reins doing double duty as CEO and Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

We are fortunate to know so many talented, ambitious and dedicated supporters of our military and one of those very special people accepted our offer to become the President of Cooking with the Troops, Inc. That young man is SPC Chad Longell, currently serving the USA. Chad brings an inside baseball dimension to our group and an energy and dedication to mission that leaves me speechless.

Our illustrious Secretary and Director of Communications, Susan Katz Keating continues to astound everyone with her dedication to the NoVA region and especially Ft Belvoir. She is expanding the scope of our involvement in the community and homeless veterans especially. She has developed relationships with several vendors and provides a steady stream of foodstuffs to veterans where ever they be found.

I am pursuing events which feed Marines directly and whoever else might show up. The previous post written by SKK details our little soiree’ in Front Royal VA where we hooked up with Warrior Hike and provided BBQ to several Marines and other service members during a rest stop on their way to the end of the Appalachin Trail. My plan is to be in Millinocket ME on 14 September and feed those folks again with an old fashioned Southern meal.

Before that happens, CWTT is going to lend logistical and tactical support to VFW Post 6364 and help put a Family Day together for Hotel Battery 3/14 Marines on 18 August here in our backyard. (So to speak). The new Post Commander is a fairly young retired Marine Master Sergeant who is more than ready to prove the USMC motto applies for ever: Semper Fidelis Always Faithful.

Good stuff coming. Thank you Harrison Martin for all your help.

S/F

Cooking With the Troops Meets Warrior Hike: Pictures and a Plan!

As promised, here are pics from Cooking With the Troops’ weekend barbecue for Warrior Hike. This group is in the process of “walking off the war” along the Appalachian Trail. On Friday, the hikers stopped off in Front Royal Virginia, and were met with good food and great company, courtesy of CWT and our master BBQ-er, Concrete Bob.Harrison Martin, who helped organize the event in conjunction with VFW Post 1860, was on hand with her camera. She has very kindly allowed me to use some of her pics. As you can see, the mood was decidedly upbeat. Which is exactly what happens every time Bob lights up a grill. We’re so happy about this Warrior Hike outfit, btw, that we already are scheming on ways to meet this group with even more good food at trail’s end!

Bob has a ladle, and he’s not afraid to use it.

More pics, after the jump…

We love volunteers!Thank you, VFW Post 1860.Can’t talk… we’re eating…If you look closely, you will see Harrison, Bob, and Boston Maggie amid the hikers and VFW folks.Categories: Blog, CwtT, Doing Good With Others, Food Events, Homefront Support, TroopsTags: BBQ, SusanKatzKeating, VFW, WarriorHikeOlder EntriesRSSGoogleYoudaoXian GuoZhua XiaMy Yahoo!newsgatorBloglinesiNezha
