A Legacy of Healing

Dr. Joy DeGruy authored the book entitled Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing, (revised 2017) which addresses the residual impacts of trauma on African Descendants in the Americas. Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome (PTSS) lays the groundwork for understanding how the past has influenced the present, and opens up the discussion of how we can eliminate non-productive attitudes, beliefs and behaviors developed to cope and survive the traumatic periods of capture, transport, enslavement, Jim Crow and current day racial terrorism. The focus of the book is to learn and build upon the strengths we have gained from the past in order to heal from injuries both past and present.

EVENTS

"Be the Healing"Symposium

The Be the Healing Symposium will address topics of systemic racism, trauma, and healing with a cross section of community members that will include educators, social workers, students, community activists, that live and work with children, youth, and adults in each city.

Dr. Joy DeGruy, will present on intergenerational and historical trauma, mental health and improvement strategies through an educational, motivational and solution-oriented lens. Professionals trained in Dr. Joy’s work will facilitate breakout sessions That will help cultivate Community healing.

This training is designed to enable participants to develop a knowledge base and critical awareness of issues specifically impacting African-American children, youth and adults.

Online Courses

The goal of this course is to expose students to the historical events and policies which have lead to contemporary social problems and structural inequalities that continue to negatively impact African Americans.

Multigenerational patterns of adaptive behaviors passed along through generations will be explored with an emphasis on assessment and interventions using evidence based, culture specific, and social justice models.

​

A relationship based approach will be presented as one method of intervention with a particular focus on culturally based strategies that include areas of spirituality, music, art and literature.
