Happy Friday!I hope you are all healthy and ready for the holidays and a much-deserved break.We did it!We made it through a semester of school.Thank you for all your patience, persistence, encouragement, and everything else it took to get to this point.It was not a perfect semester, but it was pretty fantastic in so many ways.Here is some important information as we begin the holiday break.USD 320 Food Service is offering FREE meals for all children ages 1-18 over Christmas Break!Meals will be distributed from the District Kitchen on Monday, December 21stand Monday, December 28th.For those who ordered these in advance, this is just a friendly reminder.Let s continue to practice responsible COVID measures.Our numbers are very low right now as total quarantines is 30 and just 2 active positive cases.Let s make it a goal to have a wonderful break with families, but do so in a responsible COVID safe manner. Colder weather, more time inside, and the onset of cold and flu season are upon us. The CDC has provided recommendations for winter holidays, which include continuing to practice social distancing (at least 6 feet), frequent handwashing, avoiding large gatherings, and wearing a mask. Please continue to communicate with us if you or your child have been exposed to a positive contact or become positive. KDHE continues to recommend the 14-day quarantine and monitoring after being exposed to COVID-19, Dr. Lee Norman, KDHE Secretary, said. The incubation for this disease is still 14 days. The guidance is being changed at a federal level to encourage more people to get tested and encourage better compliance with quarantines. The CDC has stated that with the reduction to a 10-day quarantine, there is a 1 to 10% risk of post-quarantine transmission. With a reduction to 7 days, there is a 5 to 12% risk of post-quarantine transmission. Even with a reduced quarantine length, people will still be expected to wear masks and monitor for symptoms.Pottawatomie County is currently working closely with other entities across the Wildcat region to reach agreement on an acceptable quarantine period. He did this, of course, to encourage calm, rational thinking.Wamego, we are experiencing COVID like we have never experienced before up to this point.Our numbers are higher than they have ever been, and a very high number of our students are being tested.However, the best way I know how to handle these issues and problem solve to meet our students needs is to stay calm and rational- the most important thing is to not get too excited. Wamego High School COVID numbers are climbing at a pretty high rate.We currently have 5 WHS students who have tested positive in a short span of time and nearly 100 quarantined students.It is very important that we keep our students away from large gatherings right now and the coming weeks.Please encourage and model this, and when you must be out, wear a mask and social distance.These are the best things we can do to help keep our schools open.We just learned yesterday that the county has made an adjustment to their definition of a close contact.The most significant change is: 10 minutes of consecutive time vs. 10 minutes of cumulative time is now the primary criteria for defining a close contact .Below are the notes directly from our local health department regarding close contacts and other factors in determining close contacts.Contact Definition You are a close contact if any of the following situations happened while you spent time with the person with COVID-19, even if they didn t have symptoms: Were within 6 feet of the person for 10 consecutive minutes or more in a single day. Had contact with the person s respiratory secretions (for example, coughed or sneezed on; kissed; contact with a dirty tissue; shared a drinking glass, food, towels, or other personal items). Live with the person or stayed overnight for at least one night in a house with the person. The chance of spreading the virus is greater the longer an infected person is close to someone and the closer they are to each other. It also matters if the infected person is coughing, sneezing, singing, shouting, or doing anything else that can put more virus into the air.For these high-risk cases consider using the 10-minute cumulative definition. The final decision on what constitutes close contact is made at the discretion of public health. The determination of close contact should be made irrespective of whether the case or contact was wearing a face mask recommended for the general public. High risk may use cumulative minutes instead of consecutive.WHS will resume classes tomorrow with one remote day, and then beginning on Monday they will begin the hybrid model.I have attached Mr. Katt s letter, which was sent to HS students and parents, so you all are aware of these details.Central, West, and WMS will continue with business as usual and please join us in our efforts to keep it that way and get our HS students back on site after Thanksgiving.Below is a letter from HS principal, Mr. Katt. This letter was sent out to all HS students and families to communicatea move to a hybrid learning model. I am sending this to all USD320 families so youare aware of this changein the district and to ensure we aretaking every precaution possible to keep our students in school. This decisionwas not taken lightly and itonly applies to the HS as dictated byincreasing COVID numbersspecificallyat WHS. Our goal is thiswill be a move we make for the next 3 weeks, and following Thanksgiving Break, we will have all students back on site in the traditional learning model. Transportation and foodservices will not change during this time for Pre-K to Grade 8. Food service will provide meals to HS students to be picked up at the district kitchen the rest of this week from 11:30 to 12:30. Further information for how meals will be distributed next week up to Thanksgiving will be shared by Thursday for HS students. To reiterate, this change only applies to WHS at this time, and we are hopeful we can turn this around and get all students back on site after Thanksgiving.Thank you for your support and please carefully read Mr. Katt s letter below.Tim Winter, Supt.Good afternoon, WHS families Due to an increase in positive Covid-19 cases, close-contact quarantines, and illnesses, Wamego High School will be moving to a Hybrid learning environment.Wednesday, November 4 and Thursday, November 5 will be preparation days for WHS staff to make this transition. Friday, November 6 will be an all-block, remote day, where students will be checking-in to each of their classes via Zoom.Beginning on Monday, November 9, students will be split into two groups and will attend school on-site twice per week and remotely three times per week.We will be tweaking the Hybrid schedule we developed in August. This Hybrid schedule will be sent out after the staff meets tomorrow. A major benefit to this learning environment is that it will allow for adequate social distancing throughout the school day.Students who are currently working remotely through Edgenuity will not change; they will continue to work entirely remotely under the direction of their cooperating teacher.At this time, we are planning to continue with this Hybrid model until Thanksgiving break and return to on-site learning on Monday, November 30.I will send out more information regarding this Hybrid learning environmentsoonThank you Kale Katt, Principal WHSOctober 29, 2020Dear USD 320 Families,Happy Halloween and I hope you are all well.It has been another great week in USD320.Our students and staff continue to work hard in and out of the classroom.Wamego High School has launchedthe Redesign process this fall, and there have beena couple opportunities for parents to hear about this work.There will be another at the BOE meeting on November 9 when Mr. Katt provides an update.Scott Meitler, Director of Instructional Services has been busy with many of our K-12 English teachers this week and last week working on ELA materials adoption and best practices to better meet the needs of our students.We hope to pilot some resources this spring and then adopt and implement in the fall of 2021.Congratulations and good luck to our HS cross country teams and those who qualified for state.This will be held on Saturday right here in Wamego.The boys will run at 9:30am and the girls will follow at approximately 10:15am.Good luck to the Coach Moody and the HS football team in round one of playoffs.We host Independence Friday at 6pm.Congrats to Coach Foote and the HS Volleyball team on a substate championship and qualifying for state.They did not advance into the 2ndround of state after falling to Bishop Miege in the first round, but they had a fantastic season and the first state appearance since 2005.All HS activities are now KSHSAA post season activities, and masks are required at all times for those are not directly competing.Our COVID numbers are up slightly for the 2ndstraight week.I want to thank everyone however, as we are still in a good place.We continue to have far fewer issues than many school districts in the state.This is not the time to let up!It continues to be important that we keep practicing the wearing of masks and social distancing whenever it is possible.Please keep doing these two things in all situations, not just at school.Our data indicates that the spread of COVID is most likely occurring outside of school.Currently we have 36 staff or students in quarantine and 1 active positive case.Our county is trending up in terms of percent positive according to state data, but again this week we feel locally that the trends and cases numbers are closer to home and in the Wamego community.Please continue to have mask and social distancing conversations with your children while also modeling this behavior.Happy Halloween and for our social emotional health, I encourage all to celebrate and enjoy Halloween at their comfort level, but please wear those masks and social distance.As always,Thanks for all your support, Stay Strong, and keep praying for Palmer and his family.Tim WinterSupt.October 15, 2020Dear USD 320 Families,I hope you are having a great week.It is time for another update.I am going to focus on two items today, positive celebrations, and the things we can control.Let s start with positive items unrelated to COVID-19.We have completed 29 days of school and our students and staff are working very hard and doing very well.Next week is conference week and an opportunity for parents, staff, and students to communicate about the successes and growth opportunities our students have as we move further through the school year.Each school will be coordinating online and zoom events to make this happen and you should have received this information from your principalsand teachers.Congratulations to 8 outstandingWamego Middle School Band students for auditioning for and being selected to the 2020 Kansas Music Educators Association North Central District Middle Level Honor Band.Mr. Richmond and Mrs. Gardner had these 8 students do a virtual audition and all 8 students were selected. The students are: Caleb Breymeyer- 5thchair trombone Eli Paddock- 2ndchair mallets 2ndchair snare drumThis week we are wrapping up MS Fall Sports.All of our student-athletes have benefit from these activities.They have worked hard, built relationships, and learned life-long lessons of commitment, discipline, work ethic, dealing with loss and disappointment, and so many other important skills.Congrats to the 7thGrade VB team and coaches on their 2ndplace league finish and good luck to our cross-country teams (MS and HS) at league today.Our HS teams have also ended or nearing the end of their seasons.Tennis wrapped up their season this past week at regionals with great effort.The girls golf team just won their regional event and qualified for state which is next Monday and Tuesday.Coach Miller and the girls had a great season and now best of luck to them at state.Volleyball is having a solid season at 16-8, winning 14 of their last 15 games.Football is also having a solid season at 3-3, but just coming off two losses to the #1 and #2 teams in the state.As noted earlier, HS league cross country is today and of course the long-standing winning tradition of Wamego Cross Country continues with expectations of league, regional, and even state championships are very realistic expectations.We also have HS students and Mrs. Topliff preparing for our fall musical coming in November.All of these celebrations and opportunities in classrooms or activities for our students have been made possible because we are in school.We are having success in minimizing the COVID numbers in our community. Zero active positive cases in the district, students or staff 8 students and staff in quarantine Average Daily Attendance in our schools is extremely high. Trends are decreasing for the county at this time.We continue to be so appreciative of the efforts of our students, staff, and community to make this happen.It is not just luck.What we are doing is making a difference.This leads me to the things we can control.We can control our own personal choices of taking precautions.Pleasepractice our 4 W s with your family and continue to encourage your students to do the same.We know there are social emotional needs of our students to have connections with friends and stay involved in activities and events.We support this by all means, we just ask that everyone practice 4 W s whenever possible and, as parents, we must model the same expectations.I bring all this up because a single COVID case could cause several quarantines and end the seasons and opportunities our students have.One example of this occurred at the regional golf tournament when a student-athlete from another school (NOT Wamego) had to leave the tournament after 3 holes of play as she was informed she was a close contact and then placed in quarantine.This had to be so very difficult for this individual and her teammates.It is not the end of the world, and we would all deal with this and move on.As I have said many times, we have to support those individuals who are positives and those who are quarantined.A great way to do that is to practice and model the precautions we recommend.KSHSAA has informed all schools that at ALL KSHSAA post-season events all non-participating individuals MUST wear a mask.This will be the case for all indoor and outdoor events, regardless of social distancing.We are asking our spectators to our last few games to now do the same.To be clear, we are asking that everyone wear a mask at FB, VB, Golf, CC, etc. at all times except when you are getting a drink or eating, regardless of social distancing.We feel our students have done pretty good job of this, and now we are asking our parents to do so as well, at ALL of our activities.Please and thank you.One other item we can control is our choice to get a flu shot or not.We encourage everyone to get a flu shot this year.On October 21, from 3:30 to 6:30 there will be a county health department flu shot clinic at the Wamego City Sports Complex (Softball/Baseball/Tennis/Soccer).This will be a quick and easy drive through clinic and all you need to bring is your insurance card or $20.Tomorrow and next Friday our students do not have school. OneWamego4W s w-frame.pdfEvery single one of these suggestions is becoming more and more important as we are experiencing an increase of COVID cases in the county.It certainly is no one s fault and it can happen to anyone.Today we learned that even our President is susceptible to COVID-19.Other schools in our area are experiencing challenges and have had to switch to remote learning- USD 435 Abilene schools for example.Greg Brown their superintendent gave me permission to share some of their numbers with you all.They have been in remote learning at all levels for approximately 2 weeks.Here are their numbers as of Sept. 30.Abilene is very similar to Wamego.Please everyone, Practice the 4 W s.I believe that if we should ever have to move to remote, it will not be due to the number of positives cases, but rather the number of quarantined individuals.Wellness first and Watching your distance are the best ways to minimize quarantines.If you or your children are not feeling well, stay home to give yourself time to see what becomes of your symptoms and possibly consult your doctor.Do not assume it is allergies, head cold, or something else.We will do our best to work with absent students and provide them instruction and resources.Flu season is also upon us and I strongly encourage everyone to get your flu shot.Please look for flu shot clinic opportunities in the area, at your work places, or contact the county health department for additional information.Our schools finally received their desk and table top sneeze guards for all students.The use of these will help minimize spread of all airborne viruses.Please encourage your children to adhere to using them in the classrooms and other areas.We also learned today that if students are separated by sneeze guards and are wearing masks, they will minimize the chance of being quarantined.This is significant and could certainly be a major step towards keeping our classrooms open.I ask at this time you keep one of our students and his family in your thoughts and prayers.This young man was in a serious car accident on Wednesday and he and his family need our support.Thanks for your support and allowing us to work with your students.Tim WinterSupt.September 28, 2020Dear USD 320 Families,I hope you all had a great weekend.Wamego Schools had a wonderful homecoming celebration with a big victory over Atchison on Friday, and the VB team followed up with a championship in the invitational tournament we hosted.Unfortunately, over the weekend we were notified that a positive case of COVID-19 has been identified at Wamego High School.The individual, a food service team member was last on site on Friday, September 25, 2020.The intent of this letter is not to alarm you, but to inform you about COVID-19 and how you can help protect your student.CDC guidelines state thatcurrently there is no evidence that people can get COVID-19 by eating or handling food.We are quite certain that no students will be identified as close contacts through their interaction at lunch times with the food service team.However, several of our food service team are being quarantined until the end of the day October 9.This will have a significant impact on our ability to prepare and serve meals at all school sites.We will pull together and make it happen so we can keep kids in school.It will, however, necessitate that all school menus will be simplified.Ala carte will not be available at the HS, and HS students will receive sack lunches for the next two weeks minimum.We ask that you work with us through this challenge.Students will still receive their full meal in terms of calories, but choice will be limited.If you think your child will need more food throughout the day or before going to athletic practice after school, you may certainly send snacks with them.Per our established protocol, all areas of the building have been sanitized and deep-cleaned regularly. We are in contact with the Pottawatomie County Health Department and will take the steps necessary to protect the health of our students and staff.The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to the regular seasonal influenza and include fever, coughing, and shortness of breath.Some have reported additional symptoms, such as a runny nose, sore throat, nausea,lethargy, lack of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Individuals who need medical care should call their medical provider to report their illness prior to seeking care at a clinic, physician s office, or hospital.Parents of students exhibiting flu-like symptoms or staff exhibiting flu-like symptoms are asked to contact our school nurses, local health authorities, or the Pottawatomie County Health Department.We are closely monitoring this situation and will provide you with updates as we know more.If you or someone you know is interested in helping serve or prepare meals, please have them reach out to Kati Wolfgang, Director Human Resources- 785-456-7643.Thanks for supporting our students and staff,and have great day.Tim WinterSupt.We just learned today that the Kansas State Department of Education has eliminated the requirement to complete daily learning logs for all students who are remote learners.The learning log has been replaced by an assurance document.This document is a simple one-page document that each family will complete one time and only one time.Families with multiple students will be able to list all students on the one assurance document they complete.USD 320 will be collecting this document electronically to further minimize the burden on our families.Students who have chosen the remote learning option, or whenever USD 320 schools are in a model where students (Pre-K-12) will be working remotely, parents and guardians will agree to the following 3 assurances:1.I understand that my child(ren) may need additional support to complete assigned work, and to the best of our ability, our family will provide the needed support.Additionally, our family will provide supervision during the learning process.2.I agree that my child(ren) are expected to be available to communicate with teaching staff on a regular basis as outlined by the school district. We are almost there finally. The start of school is just one week away. We are so excited to welcome 6th graders and 9th graders to the MS and HS next Wednesday. And then, the day we have been anxiously anticipating for these past 5 months. Thursday Sept. 3, will be the first official day for grades 1 to 12. Our current students will someday tell their kids about the LONGEST summer ever. Pre-K and KG will start school on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Our administration, teachers, nurses, office staff, and operations staff have been working extremely hard to be ready for this special first day of the 2020 school year. I want to assure everyone we are ready, and our students will be taken care of whether they are onsite or learning remotely. Families can expect buildings to be sending more specific details in the coming days. Bus route riders will start hearing from their bus drivers, and yes, the shuttle bus route for students within the city limits is ready to go. Here are more details regarding the shuttle bus, and please read carefully as there are couple changes since we have collected rider information. Middle School students who live in the city limits and on the South side of highway 24 will be able to access the shuttle bus at two locations:MS Stops South of HWY 24 Stop 1 - 7:25am, The T-intersection of Sycamore and 6th Street. Students will await the bus on this city owned lot on the North side of 6th street Stop 2 - 7:30am, City Park Shelter located at the intersection of Pine and 6th street Upon making these two stops, the bus will travel to WMS and drop off these MS students. The bus will then disinfect the interior and high touch areas before traveling to the North end of Lilac Lane on Say Road. There will be 2 stops between 7:40am and 7:50am on Lilac Lane for West and Central Elementary students who live in this area North of Hwy 24:Elementary Stops North of HWY 24The bus will then travel to West Elementary to drop off West students followed by a drop off at Central. This route will be repeated after school in reverse order with the loading of Central students at 3:05. The bus will then pick up West riders and drop students off at Stop 4, and Stop 3 respectively. The bus will then travel to WMS to load students to be dropped off at Stop 2 and Stop 1. We hope this is an effective solution for our families who need this service for their students. Please remember that this is a limited service. MS students who live in the city limits South of HWY 24 are eligible for this service and Elementary students who live North of HWY 24 in the city limits are eligible for this service. Students who do not need to cross HWY 24 to reach their school are not eligible for this shuttle bus service. I have attached a map of the stops. These stops and times are subject to change if we determine more suitable stop locations. We require that all riders respect all properties on or near these stop locations. We also ask that students wear a mask and social distance at each stop. Thank you so much for taking the time to complete it. We had 691 surveys completed.We have and will carefully continue to review this information to make improvements. Overall the survey responses were extremely positive. Allresponses were in the neighborhood of 95% positive. This is wonderful, however, if you are having any issues or concern please reach out to your teachers, principals, or myself. Most indicated little or no issues with internet connectivity, but some indicated speed issues. Our technology team took a look at this and we hope to have improved this area by adding an additional filter survey for the district. All of ourdistrict owned devices still go through our filter even from a remote location. Please keep us informed of any issues you may be having. Please use the site for troubleshooting these issues.https://sites.google.com/usd320.com/techhelp/homeDear USD320 Families,March 27, 2020I hope you are all doing well.You continue to be in our thoughts.Monday, March 30 is an exciting day!Essentially it is our 2ndFirst Day of School for the 19-20 school year.We will start the Continuous Learning Program, Day 1.I want to assure all that we will take this very slow for the first few days.This is an experiment that is happening around the entire country, and never before will the internet, zoom, google classroom, seesaw, and other online learning platforms been accessed to this level.Because of this I ask all to be patient and gracious to all.If you experience technical issues, your first contact is your student s teacher.They have been trained on trouble shooting the common minor issues that may occur.If they are unable to correct this issue, we will then utilize the USD320 Technology Department.Specific information regarding schedules and format for the Continuous Learning Program isor has been sent out by each school.Please be looking for this information.The teachers and principals have been working very hard for all of our students to put forth a quality educational experience for the remainder of the school year.Our school calendar will remain as is.Remember to take advantage of the school lunch program that is now offered at 3 locations.Our food service have been simply amazing preparing and distributing lunch and breakfast meals.They are working very hard along with some other staff and volunteers.Yesterday over 1600 meals (breakfast and lunch) were distributed.We also started providing toilet paper to those who ask.This will take place every Tuesday-TP Tuesday.Please follow all recommended guidelines; Avoid groups of people Monitor for these symptoms and if they occur contact your primary physician by phone Fevers- It is recommended that you are fever free for 72 hours without the assistance of fever reducers before you are not contagious from COVID 19.Please practice this protocol no matter why you have a fever, whether you have been tested or not.Better safe than sorry. This would also imply all school activities, programs, and events will be canceled.We understand this may place tremendous hardship on our families and staff, and impact the social and emotional well-being of our students.We also realize the many cancelations will be a great disappointment to all.For that, we are very sorry. In cooperation with the Kansas State Department of Education, we are developing a Continuous Learning plan to meet the ongoing learning needs of our students. While our buildings may be closed, student learning will continue. Details of this process will be developed with our teachers next week and will be communicated to all families as soon as possible.Food Service will continue to provide breakfast and lunch at no cost to anyone ages 1-18. At this time, meals can be picked up at the Wamego City Park or the Louisville ball diamonds from 11:00am to 1:00pm.Our staff and board of education are also working on other critical issues, such as what this means for our seniors, how this will affect next school year, and what impact this will have on our employees. A decision regarding next week will be made later this week. The KS Dept. of Education and Governor Kelly also yesterday Strongly encouraged All schools in Kansas to close this week. Please do your best to practice the precautionary measures of social distancing and avoiding travel as much as possible. Remember the symptoms to look for are- coughing, shortness of breath, and a fever greater than 100.4. If these occur call your primary physician and they will direct you to your next steps. I have attached the latest updates from the health department on self isolation ifyou have traveled. This now includes areas in the U.S.,specific countiesin Colorado, all international travel,and cruise travel. PLEASE review and take the appropriate recommendations to heart. Grab Go meals will be available from 11:00-1:00pm in front of the Wamego City Park Train Shelter House on 6th Street. There will be a pull through lane (graciously marked by the City) for cars to pull into. Food Service staff will hand meals to students in the vehicles. Students may also walk to the park and pick up their meals from a Food Service Staff member at the Shelter House. Each student can pick up a lunch for today and a breakfast for tomorrow.
