Commentary by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — It’s been a few weeks since I last wrote a Sunday blog. So I’ve got a few things to say about Memorial Auditorium air conditioning, 79th District Cheryl Helmer, and having no Sumner County attorney candidate ———Memorial Auditorium air conditioningOn Tuesday, Wellington City Manager Shane Shields announced CARES Act funding used for COVID-19 related expenses will be used to purchase a central air conditioning system for the downtown Memorial Auditorium.Memorial Auditorium is a 100-year-old furnace of a building during the summer months which makes the structure basically unusable from June to September. And a lot of good folks have worked hard and put in a lot of hours to raise around $39,000 over the past decade to get one. But the cost to air-condition the 118-by-196-foot building costs over $300,000 according to figures released in past articles. Private fund-raising alone amongst its citizens isn’t getting the job done. I always thought air conditioning would come via a governmental grant or from a large private donor. That’s why Wichita State University has the “Charles Koch Arena” and the Wichita community has “Intrust Bank” Arena. Large massive donations have been procured along with taxpayer funding. So perhaps the best way to look at this new funding coming through is via a governmental grant. Not much unlike say a parks and recreation grant for sidewalks. Clearwater s front line gave Wellington fits.by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Clearwater Indians knocked out the Wellington varsity volleyball team from post-season competition at the Class 4A sub-state in Wellington.Clearwater would outlast Wellington 28-26 in a sensation first set. The Indians would then go onto win the second, 25-12.The Crusaders defeated Mulvane in dominating fashion in the first round 25-14, 25-13. Clearwater disposed of Winfield 25-12.Wellington ended the season at 10-21 in the first season of Audrey Gill as head coach. The team will lose twin sisters Myriland and Mykiland French but will be returning the core of the team next season.Clearwater, at 20-12, came into the sub-state as clear favorites. This was an old-style sub-state based on geography instead of the seeded format in which tournaments are based on records. The reason for the return of this format was due to the pandemic. The KSHSAA did not want teams traveling too far to other areas of the state in fear of spreading the coronavirus.  The City of Wellington is currently taking applications for the position of Sanitation Collector involving refuse collection and requiring manual labor in all weather conditions.  High School graduate or GED.  Salary range is $10.42 to $15.10 DOQ.  Anticipate applicant to acquire Commercial Drivers License within 6 months for consideration as Driver/Collector.  Please apply on-line at www.cityofwellington.net  or to the Human Resources, 317 S. The final regular season week was an interesting one in Sumner County.Conway Springs 41 Sedgwick 35This was a good one that Conway Springs fans could probably appreciate after so many lopsided wins in the weeks before. Conway Springs saw a 20-point lead nearly evaporate in the fourth quarter after Heath Hilger ran for a 20 yard touchdown to make it 41-21.Sedgwick would score on on a 1-yard Lance Hoffsommer run to make it 41-28. Then the opposing Cardinals thwarted Conway Springs on the next drive. That set up a Ryan Stucky 45 yard pass to Henry Burns to make it a six-point ball game.Conway Springs, though, would control the ball for the final 4:48 of the game to pick up the win.  by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington football team took down Mulvane for the first time since 2005, and as a result, will be hosting Arkansas City next Friday night in the first round of the Class 4A State playoffs. The Crusaders ended a 12-game losing streak to the Wildcats, but it wasn t easy. Wellington had to pick up two first downs and run out the clock. Twice, Mulvane had deep throws that went incomplete that could have been game-tying touchdowns. Wellington head football coach Zane Aguilar states: They made us fight for it tonight. They had a couple of players back we hadn t seen on film and were extremely physical. Our defense had to keep their quarterback inside and they did that in the fourth quarter. For the second straight game, Wellington dictated the fourth quarter. The Crusaders were ahead by a mere 14-13 margin going into the final 12 minutes.  Sumner Newscow report — Wellington will be hosting Arkansas City in the first round of the Class 4A West playoffs next Friday. The Kansas State High School Activities Association released its playoff brackets this morning. In other bracket news, Belle Plaine travels to Hillsboro in Class 2A. Conway Springs gets a bye, Argonia/Attica hosts Macksville, Oxford travels to Sedan, and Caldwell hosts Wilson. The brackets involving Sumner County teams are below. The Crusaders ended its long losing streak with Mulvane winning week #8 20-13. As a result, the Crusaders are 3-5 and have pulled into a tie with Augusta and Ulysses.According to the KSHSAA site, Wellington has -1.88 points. Augusta and Ulysses both have -2.63. That would give Wellington a No. 7 seed. However, Wellington lost to Ulysses so that has not been factored in. The KSHSAA will be announcing the playoff bracket soon.We will have the full district standings and playoff pairings when it becomes available. In the meantime, here are the statistics for tonight s game. Our story is also coming soon.RUSHING M Ellis 19-93, Myers 12-13. Total: 31-106. W Schettler 20-169, Wright 10-24, Cullens 11-41. Commentary by Devin McCue, Sumner Newscow — Happy Friday. Personally, I have never seen an episode of the early 2000’s drama, the West Wing created by Aaron Sorkin.  I know it’s a staple in American television and considered to be groundbreaking in the way politics were portrayed on the silver screen. But the constant critique I hear is that it creates a mythical version of politics where facts reign supreme and both sides respect each other as equals.  While I’ve still never seen that show, I know I’ll never need to after watching Sorkin’s new movie on Netflix called the Trial of the Chicago 7.This film recreates the night in 1968 Chicago where police brutally assaulted protesters outside the Democratic National Convention.  American police making a mockery of their country on the global stage is old hat these days, but at that time this was a major scandal and the Nixon administration was desperate for a scapegoat so they could sell the lie that the very people meant to “protect and serve” citizens were somehow justified when beating the hell out of them on live television.  Luckily there were eight scapegoats in attendance that night, but more on them in a second. NO ORDERS WILL BE HONORED AFTER MIDNIGHT, SUNDAY NOVEMBER 1. by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — And now we are here. Final weekend of the regular season in the 2020 Coronavirus season. Here s what Sumner County teams need to do to assure themselves the best possible post-season outcome Standings are determined by 1) win-loss percentage, 2) head-to-head games. 3. point differential of +/- 13 per game.Douglass at Belle Plaine It appears Belle Plaine is in the playoffs regardless of what happens tonight. If the Dragons happen to lose, it would drop them to 2-3 for a .400 winning percentage which would be above Douglass 1-2 and .333 mark. Belle Plaine can sore up the No. 3 seed with a win.Standings are determined by 1) win-loss percentage, 2) head-to-head games. 3. point differential of +/- 13 per game. Payton Ginter shares a laugh with her dad Wellington head coach James Ginter.by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Payton Ginter, a Wellington High School senior, won the Class 4A Individual Girls Golf State Championship last Tuesday at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course. She was the first high school golf state champion since 2010 at WHS. (See story here) We caught up with Wellington head coach James Ginter, who is also her dad, to get his thoughts on Ginter s huge victory over the two-day event. ———1. What is your overall reaction to Payton’s big state championship victory? My overall reaction of Payton s individual state championship was and still is one of great elation. It s hard to put into words what this experience meant to both of us. This journey started from the day she was born riding around in the golf cart. 2.Were you surprised with the results?I was not surprised by the results. Payton and I had many long conversations before the season began that she would have an excellent opportunity to win the state championship. Her results throughout the season definitely backed that up. Her season resulted in six first-place finishes out of 10 tournaments, never finishing below fourth place. That s an incredible accomplishment when you re competing against 40 and 60 golfers at each tournament.3. It was a good four years. What did she do in the other three state tournaments? Edward PalmerEdward Hoyt Palmer, Jr. died Thursday, October 22, 2020, in Winfield at the age of 96. He was born the son of Edward H. and Helen (Van Houten) Palmer on May 6, 1924, in Paterson, New Jersey. As a young man, Edward faithfully served his country during WWII as a flight officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Following his service, Edward began a career in sales. At age 38, he shifted professions, earned a law degree from the University of Iowa, and then held posts as Assistant Dean at Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, Dean of Oklahoma City University School of Law, and eventually retired as Executive Director of the Oklahoma Bar Foundation. On August 2, 1947, he and Doris Marilyn Ruzek were united in marriage in Chicago, Illinois. Together they celebrated 64 years of marriage before her passing in 2012.  by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — It has been a streak as baffling as it is frustrating. When Wellington head coach Zane Aguilar was recently told it was 2005 since Wellington last beat Mulvane he said, I was 19. Friday night, the opportunity presents itself. Wellington is actually favored to beat Mulvane Friday night. We are young, but if there is one team younger than us it would be Mulvane, Aguilar said. The Wildcats have one win, a 25-20 victory over Coffeyville a team that lost to Labette County two weeks ago. The other five losses have been significant. It lost to Rose Hill by 40, Clearwater by 47, Andale and Collegiate by a combined 119-0.So this could be the year. But Wellington must exorcise a lot of ghosts (good thing we are close to Halloween). Mulvane has won 12 straight games over the Dukes, three of those by a touchdown or less. Wellington doesn t have that long of a streak with any other team. The Crusaders defeated Andale in 2011 and Collegiate in 2018. Both of those programs have administered some of Wellington s biggest thrashings.  by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The fundraising for air conditioning at Memorial Auditorium has been an all-consuming task whether it be John Michael Montgomery or Logan Mize singing concerts, or a night of glitz fundraisers. The Memorial Auditorium has worked hard but has 0nly raised a fraction of the cost.Well, now it appears in one big swoop that Memorial air conditioning will become a reality because of the Cares Act Coronavirus Relief fund.Wellington City Manager Shane Shields informed the council at its Tuesday meeting that the air conditioning project falls under the eligibility of funding. The project therefore will be paid through the U.S. Government. Shields gave this notice at the end of the meeting. No action was taken.
