Our friends at New England Distilling have created a craft cocktail to toast to Mythmakers: The Art of Winslow Homer and Frederic Remington and celebrate Thanksgiving, no matter what the holiday looks like for you this year. The Portland Museum of Art has received a grant for $10,000 from the Avangrid Foundation to support Art for All, the PMA’s guiding principle and commitment to Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI).The grant marks the second consecutive year that the Avangrid Foundation has provided support to the PMA. For just a few more weeks, the tools of the acclaimed sculptor Gaston Lachaise will be on view on the first floor of the museum in the Larry and Jean Pugh Gallery, just past the PMA Store and Unum Rotunda. In this virtual program from October, Monson Arts' senior advisor Stuart Kestenbaum and Portland-based artists Tessa O'Brien and Celeste Roberge (both former resident artists in the program) discuss the vision for and the impact of this new arts center. In the spring of 2018, art conservator Nina Roth-Wells came to the PMA to review a painting that had just come into the collection as part of a generous gift of Winslow Homer works from the Berger Family Educational Trust. Observing the painting under UV light revealed unusually large patches of darkness, indicating that something had been added on top of the varnish. Roth- Wells suspected that there may have been something present just underneath the surface of this calm evening scene…. This summer, we went on the lookout for up and coming young artists of all ages, and boy did we find them! Check out the brand new online gallery featuring our future generation of artists, and then add your own work to the collection!Virtual Programs and ActivitiesWant to tune in from home? PMA programs offer a wide range of experiences about issues that matter. The museum’s public programs reach more than 54,000 visitors annually and are designed for visitors of all ages and backgrounds. Several artists in the PMA’s collection depict windows in their artworks as a symbol of openness, hope, and to bring together two different perspectives. For this activity, we will draw inspiration from the window views in our own homes to create a drawing. Robert Indiana used words as a central theme in his artwork to express the power of language. For this activity, we will choose a single word as the main focus of our artwork to inspire comfort and hope. Justin Richel creates sculptures by stacking objects on top of each other to build tall, playful columns that tell a story. In this activity, we will use books to create a stacked sculpture with words. Explore Carrie Moyer’s "Intergalactic Emoji Factory" using movement as a way to connect with the lines and expressive paint layers in this artwork. Movement helps us look at artwork in new and different ways.Recommended for ages 2-8, and the young at heart. Carrie Moyer and Sheila Pepe talk about collaboration as being fun, playful, and experimental. In this activity, you will work with another artist to create two collaborative drawings. You will use a window in your home as a way to observe and frame life outside.Ages 5 and up.
