I realize I have been gone from this space for way too long. Life has been a whirlwind (to say the least) and I feel like things are finally settling down. I gave a brief update here, and maybe one day I will do a post with a full update, but in the meantime I hope you enjoy these free printable gift tags.

Happy Holidays!

Pregnancy + motherhood are just wild to me. It’s something that you can prepare for but not be prepared at all. Something filled with so much joy and happiness but also anguish and sadness; you’re constantly surrounded by your child and people but somehow can feel so lonely.

When I was pregnant, I did everything I could to help me with labor and delivery. I did pilates, spin, cardio, strength training at least 4-5 times a week. Daily walks and deep squats to prepare my body for delivery. I drank all the elixirs and teas to strengthen my uterus. When 8 months hit my body gave up and I was in so much pain. I continued to push through as my doctor kept reassuring me the pain was normal from pregnancy (which I later find out is not true…) Labor and delivery went smoothly so I thought, but the pain I felt got more and more excruciating. 1 week postpartum and I still couldn’t sit up, walk or stand. I called my doctor and once again she assured me my body was just recovering. 5 weeks postpartum and no progress – I called my doctor and she ordered an MRI. The scan came back showing I had a fracture on the left side of my pelvis. Whether the fracture came from delivery or before, I will never know. But what I quickly learned was the pain was not normal. And don’t ever let anyone tell you pain and discomfort is normal, it’s common but not normal. It took me 4-5 months to find a PT who would work with me. Because I couldn’t move, she would come to my house to do treatments. After a month of no progression she referred me to a specialist who had me work with another pelvic floor PT – after 8 months postpartum I started to feel relief and could do some normal function. However, I still couldn’t sit – I continued treatment and they found my tailbone had been dislocated. They popped it back in place and 10 months postpartum I’m able to sit again. Hallelujah!

I am currently working with an amazing chiropractor and pelvic floor PT which has been a game changer. I’ve learned so much about my body, it’s incredible.

At our baby girl’s 1 year birthday party, I could stand and hold her – which is a true miracle. We’ve prayed for this. Nothing went the way we expected, but our God is a redeemer and He will redeem the time that was lost.

Some things I’ve learned from my experience —

1 | be kind to yourself – when I was lying in bed I felt a crazy amount of guilt – guilt because I couldn’t hold my baby or be the mother I wanted to be for her; guilt because I couldn’t physically do or help with anything and was so dependent on those around me; guilt because I had to resign from my job and not contributing financially. I didn’t realize at that time how much of that guilt and stress was actually preventing my body from healing. Stress puts your body into sympathetic (fight or flight) which can be a helpful short term response but not good for your body longterm. Even if you don’t go through some traumatic experience, you just birthed a human being, all your body to rest and give yourself time heal.

2 | know your body – this was huge for me. You are your own advocate. To this day I can’t believe I thought the pain I was feeling was normal – my pain tolerance is obvi super high. I trusted a healthcare provider more than I trusted myself. I’ve learned so much about my body since then. Not just the pelvis, pelvic floor and what’s involved in pregnancy and delivery. But I’ve learned how every part of your body works together to keep you at your optimal state. I’ve learned the importance of gut health and its connection with every other part of your body to absorb and use nutrients, to detox and eliminate waste, to send signals to your brain for function. It has been something I’ve become super passionate about and would love to pursue this even more in the future.

3 | have a strong support system – this is so important. I’m talking about a strong support system during your pregnancy, labor and delivery as well as after. I did not have this in my healthcare team so it’s one of my top priorities to have this for our next one. Thankfully afterwards during recovery we had my parents who stayed with us to help with the baby; we had an incredible group of close friends and church community who set up meal trains, dropped off food daily, checked on us, spoke life into us and prayed fearlessly for us. And to all the mamas, have a group of mama friends – this is something that has been so life changing for me. We should not do this alone. Not only are play dates with the babes fun but it’s so good to have friends who are on the same journey and who you can go to and lean on for support and advice. I’m so thankful to have found an amazing group of mama friends to do life with.

4 | be flexible with expectations – it’s ok to change or let go of expectations altogether. As you can tell, absolutely nothing went as expected and that was the hardest for me to cope with. When you put so much time and preparation into something, it hurts deep when you need to let it go and feel like it all went to waste. But I really learned how to surrender during this season. I know no matter what we could’ve done to prepare, God has something better and I literally told Him ok Lord take it all from me, I’m laying it down at the cross. I felt a huge weight lifted off of me and a book that really helped me during this time is Mom Set Free by Jeannie Cunnion. To this day we have zero expectations, we just take it day by day and embrace all the victories and chaos that comes with this life! :)

I know theres so much when it comes to pregnancy and motherhood there would never be a post long enough but Im hoping that sharing my story will help and inspire you! You got this mama!
