This is chapter 13 (part II) of my book DIABETES. A world of possibilities , which I m publishing here for free. You can access all chapters of the book published until now here. There are a variety of diets and treatments, from hundreds or thousands of years ago to the present day, to treat diabetes. Some have been more studied than others, and others have been passed from generation to generation by word of mouth and collective experience. Now I will mention the different ways of understanding and treating diabetes which I have been studying and applying during these 15 years of research. I will summarize very briefly what each one is about, since explaining each of them in depth would make this book twice as long. Let me start with the diets for diabetes mentioned in the comparative table from last week: Dr. Stefan Ripich and Jim Healthy holistic diet (book [ ] Continue reading... This is chapter 13 of my book DIABETES. A world of possibilities , which I m publishing here for free. You can access all chapters of the book published until nowhere. This chapter has been the one where I struggled most with deciding how to approach it and what to write. Surely, because I know that it’s the topic where you might be most interested. This can be a long one, so if you want to reach the comparative table with the different diets for diabetes, go ahead to the bottom of this post. Since I am not a nutritionist, biologist, nor chemist, and I have not yet had the experience of having cured my type 1 diabetes with some particular type of diet, I cannot (and, I think, I should not) recommend a specific diet as the better one. I thought of working together with an expert in nutrition for diabetes [ ] Continue reading... I have already written about the Roman s family here before. Since I found the case of their two sons with type 1 diabetes and how they have approached it very interesting, I interviewed them. You can read the answers here below I hope you can get inspired or learn something that you can apply to yourself or your children if they have diabetes. Please, share briefly with us who you are and why are you involved in the diabetes world. What type of diabetes do your children have/had and when were they diagnosed? We are Dan and Sally Roman, the parents of two type 1 diabetic children. Dan was the former Vice President of Sales and Marketing for a specialty pharmacy and disposable medical supply company, and Sally was a Registered Nurse before becoming a full time mother to 6 children. Together, we are co-founders of Health-e-Solutions. After quickly experiencing the limits [ ] Continue reading... This is chapter 12 of my book DIABETES. If the brain is our main control center, having a second brain indicates the importance of the gut to our health. The gut is the first line of defense of our immune system, since the digestive system represents almost the only access point to the human body and, therefore, the main road for viruses and germs looking to enter the body and blood. To combat this, our digestive system begins, when we are born, with a wall of defenses, such as enzymes and good bacteria, to fight the bad bacteria via a defense wall that should only be permeable to molecules having [ ] Continue reading... This is a subject of much controversy, especially between proponents of allopathic medicine and alternative medicine advocates. These differences are based on the experience of each of them, and their intentions. Allopathic medicine, with its treatments, has never been able to cure someone with diabetes, nor return sugar levels to normal without medication (type 2 diabetes) and they say that this disease has no cure. Alternative medicine—more natural and holistic—on the other hand, has always been more open to treat the disease in different ways, and in many cases they did reverse diabetes in patients with the disease (especially type 2, and to a lesser degree type 1). These cures are usually denied by allopathic medicine practicioners or they say that [ ] Continue reading... This is chapter 9 of my book DIABETES. Although I try to keep this book motivating and positive, I think it would be misleading not to warn about the potential consequences of having poorly controlled diabetes. I hope this chapter does not get you down or discourage you. Rather, I hope you take it as the greatest motivation to be as healthy as possible and do everything in your power to control your diabetes and avoid all those health complications that can derive from diabetes. Because diabetes affects the blood vessels and nerves, it can affect any part of the body. However, certain parts of the body are affected more than others: Heart: Diabetes contributes to high blood pressure and is linked to high cholesterol (the bad cholesterol), which is considered [ ] Continue reading... I was hesitant to include this chapter in the book to explain the different types of diabetes there are, because if you bought this book, one might assume that you know what type of diabetes you have and what it is. But, taking into account the comments that some people write on my website, where they say they do not know what kind of diabetes they have, I feel it is worth explaining it here, in case you are reading this book as a novice in the world of diabetes. I ll explain it shortly, and if you want to know more about each type of diabetes, you can do a search on Wikipedia or Google and get much more information. Diabetes must be [ ] Continue reading... This is chapter 7 of my book DIABETES. A world of possibilities , which I m publishing here for free. You can access all the chapters published until nowhere. Everybody knows that diabetes can physically affect different parts of the body. But it also affects the person suffering from it emotionally, and somehow also those around him. Changes in blood glucose levels, from hyperglycemia to hypoglycemia or vice versa, often affect mood and, therefore, also the quality of life. Let s see how stress, depression, and other emotional states can affect our overall health, especially if you have diabetes. Stress For some time, stress has been directly linked to diabetes. There are some theories that even point to stress as a possible cause of this disease. Causing it or not, the truth is that stress can affect blood sugar levels, usually causing hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), making the adequate control of diabetes harder. [ ] Continue reading... The topic of sleep seems to be more important than one might think in relation to diabetes. According to researchers from Chicago Medical Center University, suppression of slow wave sleep in healthy young adults significantly decreases their ability to regulate sugar levels in the blood and increases the risk of type 2 diabetes. Deep sleep, also called slow-wave sleep, is thought to be the most restorative sleeping phase. This study found that, after only three nights of selective suppression of slow-wave sleep, healthy young people were less sensitive to insulin (25 percent less sensitive), resulting in an increase of 23 percent in blood glucose levels, comparable to older adults with impaired glucose tolerance. Although they needed more insulin to metabolize the same amount [ ] Continue reading... This is the second part of chapter 5 of my book DIABETES. For example, I found that when I ate half an apple before exercise (always depending on how high the sugar was before the activity), my blood sugar afterwards was high. I tested something different: instead of an apple, I ate half a slice of bread or half a cracker with peanut butter without sugar and a bit of cheese, and afterwards, glucose was fine. Glucose also varies if I go to run or if I exercise at home with a cross-trainer (stationary bike type machine but where you stand, you move the arms, legs and the entire body) And sometimes, doing exactly the same activity and eating the same as other days when glucose was fine, blood glucose was [ ] Continue reading... If you have read other books, or online articles, on how to treat diabetes, you have probably seen that in most of them, if not all, exercise or sport plays a major role. In fact, exercise is one of the three pillars recommended to manage diabetes; the other two being diet and insulin or medication, accordingly. Although traditional allopathic medicine generally considers the drugs as the main pillar, most naturopathic medicine puts more weight on diet and exercise. Some of you might think now: “oh no, more of the same!” Yes, more of the same. If exercise is something recommended in virtually all types of diabetes treatments, from allopathic to naturists, vegan diets, low-carb diets, Paleo diets, etc. and [ ] Continue reading... In health, as in any other sphere of our lives, the first thing we must have clear is why we want to be healthy, or lose weight, or overcome a disease, because that motivation is what will give us the strength to continue forward every day, and is what we use in moments of weakness. Many productivity theories teach that, in order to reach something, we have to set goals and write them down on paper or a computer, read them each day, and stay focused on the achievement of those objectives. While I agree with these theories, I believe that having a clear goal does not help much without having clear reason why you want to get it. Maybe it has something [ ] Continue reading... Several people asked me to write something positive about diabetes in my book, because usually all that you read is negative and hopeless. I will devote this chapter, although I have tried to write all of this book with a positive approach, to bringing hope and practical advice to potential benefits of diabetes. Surely, many are now wondering: Benefits of diabetes? Is there anything positive in diabetes? Diabetes, like any other disease or health condition, has the potential to make us grow. For me, this is the most positive thing that health discomforts bring. That does not mean that it is not sometimes very hard to live with diabetes, or that we do not feel kind of depressed, moody, angry, sad, etc. The [ ] Continue reading... When I had written about half of this book, I came across a book (Dr. Bernstein s Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars) that, until then, had not called my attention. I remember reading years ago, when I started with diabetes, the name Dr. Bernstein. I think I read something, but I did not investigate further. There is a saying or proverb that says the teacher appears when the student is ready. That s exactly what happened to me with Dr. Bernstein. Years ago, I was not prepared for his theory or treatment. Now, I am. For those who do not know who this doctor is, I put it here in a nutshell. Richard K. Bernstein was diagnosed with Type 1 [ ] Continue reading... This is chapter 1 of my book DIABETES. You can access all the chapters here. 1998 was a rather stressful year for me (although at that time I didn’t perceived it as stressful). I was 23 years old, in the last year of college. In the afternoons, I worked at the computer room of the university to pay the cost of my studies. The last few weeks of the course, I also had to study for finals. I did perceive those last weeks as more stressful. I remember that, from the date of the finals until prom, there were two or three weeks inbetween. During those days, I was at my parents‘ house while looking for a job, at least for that summer. I think I was worried that I wouldn’t like my first job after university or that I [ ] Continue reading...
