Monitoring, data and research to understand environmental change We are the UK's long-term environmental monitoring and research programme. We've been making regular measurements of air, soil, water and a range of animals and plants across a network of sites for over 25 years, supporting science to determine how and why the natural environment is changing. Supporting environmental science Our data are used to detect and understand trends in the environment and in the presence and abundance of plants and animals. We support researchers by providing long-term environmental datasets and well-instrumented sites for field research. Find out more Science to support policymaking and management of natural resources ECN’s data and expertise are relevant to a range of environmental policy issues including climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss. Find out more An active consortium with links across the globe ECN is a partnership of UK organisations responsible for environmental policies and natural resource management. We also work with similar networks in other countries. ECN is the UK node of ILTER, the International Long-Term Ecological Research Network. Find out more During the Covid-19-related current restrictions on travel and physical distancing, many routine visits to ECN sites have temporarily ceased. This will inevitably result in gaps forming in some time series as will be the case for many other environmental monitoring activities. Data collection will recommence as soon as the situation allows and partner organisations deem it safe for site visits and laboratory analysis to restart. Release from sheep‐grazing appears to put some heart back into upland vegetation: A comparison of nutritional properties of plant species in long‐term grazing experiments This study at ECN Moor House in the English Pennine hills compares the nutritional properties of plant species in sheep-grazed and ungrazed upland plots. The study is based on long-term grazing exclosures at Moor House that are now coordinated by ECN and supported by the Ecological Continuity Trust (ECT). COSMOS-UK soil moisture monitoringThe ECN site at Sourhope lies 15 miles south-east of Kelso near the head of the Bowmont valley on the western slopes of the Cheviot. The site covers an area of approximately 1100 hectares. The vegetation at the Target Sampling Site is representative of that across both the farm and many parts of the uplands in southern Scotland consisting of coarse grassland dominated by White bent (Nardus stricta) and Flying bent (Molinia caerulea).
