The Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station conducts research on food and fiber systems, their impact on the environment, and their relation to the future needs of Virginia, the nation, and the world.  VAES faculty are located at 11 Agricultural Research and Extension Centers and within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. AREC faculty and staff, along with faculty based at the main campus, deliver research and Extension programs at these sites, which represent the commonwealth’s diversity and take advantage of the unique characteristics and challenges found in each location. The USDA NIFA grant was one of five involving Virginia Tech that total more than $18.6 million. Though COVID-19 has halted many of the in-person events that Virginia Cooperative Extension has historically held, it hasn t slowed Extension agents, specialists, and administrators who have brought many of the in-person experiences online, which has resulted in some unique and useful educational opportunities. Virginia Tech researchers are studying how long SARS-CoV-2 survives on surfaces, focusing on its survival on food, food contact surfaces, and other points along the food supply chain. Reiter, who also serves as an associate professor in the School of Plant and Environmental Resources, has an extensive background in the soil and nutrient management areas on the agronomically important and environmentally sensitive Eastern Shore of Virginia. In a new film tied to the annual release of the Global Agricultural Productivity Report, Agricultural Productivity in a Time of Pandemics, Virginia Tech Executive Vice President and Provost Cyril Clarke discusses the linkages between human, animal, and environmental health a concept known as One Health. This year, Ag Expo was canceled due to COVID-19, but that didn t stop Virginia Cooperative Extension from continuing to deliver the research-based scientific knowledge that producers know and trust.
