FrontPage Page history last edited by Liz 13 years, 5 months ago Listening is themost importantpart of communication, but along with that comes non listening.According to Julia Wood, there are 6 obtacles or barriers to effective listening. These obstacles are referred to as types of non-listening. The 6 forms of non-listening include pseudolistening, monopolizing, selective listening, defensive listening, ambushing, and literal listening.In a study done by the University of Arizona called A Factor Analysis of Barriers to Effective Listening, they determined what factors were the most frequently encountered among business college students. In this study students identified disinterest, internal distraction, inattentiveness, and rebuttal tendency as the top barriers to listening. In a seperate experiment in the same study they found that the most frequently occuring listening barriers among students were (1) listening primarily for details or facts; (2) becoming distracted by noise; (3) daydreaming or becoming preoccupied; (4) thinking of another topic or detouring because of something the speaker has said; and (5) lack of interest in the speaker's subject. We will be covering some of these barriers now.
