and sometimes, you build the circus yourself.Named after the circus worker who “assembles and dismantles tents, cares for the grounds, and handles animals and equipment,” the Roustabout team is committed to rolling up our sleeves and doing the hard work to bring art to you. Also, in theme with our circus-inspired name, we do not yet have a permanent home. Rather, we move across Southeast Michigan, presenting vibrant and diverse productions in as many cities as we can reach, with the goal to find our best fit when the time is right. The impact of COVID-19 has reached us all, and our top priority is the safety of each and every person in the theatre. As a result, we have postponed our entire 2020 season by one year to 2021. We are considering many options for what we can do in lieu of live performances. At the same time, we also recognize that we are not the voices that most need to be heard in the midst of current events. There are those who, with an incredible amount of emotional labor, are creating and sharing virtual programming and cultural resources as our country navigates both a pandemic and a movement simultaneously. We are delving into those resources to educate and better ourselves as individuals and as a company, and when we return, we will be better.But let us leave no doubt: We believe that Black Lives Matter. We know that systemic racism has permeated even the most progressive corners of our society, and we understand that we ALL have an urgent role to play in helping create lasting change.We are grateful for the time we have now to do this critical work, and we look forward to sharing our next steps as they come together.
