Welcome to the Martial Art of Awareness, officially known as I Liq Chuan, located in downtown Hood River.I-Liq Chuan (意力拳) is an internal Chinese martial art (much like Taijiquan, Xingyiquan, Baguazhang) based on Zen (禪) and tai chi (太極) principles. It was developed in Malaysia based on several Chinese and Hakka martial arts. It emphasizes training both the mind and the physical body.I liq Chuan (literally translated as “mind-body fist” or alternatively “mental-physical boxing”) is an internal art known for its combative effectiveness as well as for its health benefits. I-Liq Chuan (ILC) is often referred to as the Martial Art of Awareness due to its emphasis on mindfulness training as the foundation for achieving martial skill. The practice of I Liq Chuan develops the ability to react spontaneously to attacks, not relying upon prearranged responses, through its specialized training methodology. When you make a stronger, deeper connection to your body, you become better able to make small adjustments to your posture and alignment that then puts less stress on your body. Develop physical sensitivity and sensorial mental awareness to gain the ability to redirect and off balance an opponent. At higher levels, fa jing strikes to the meridian points and ch’in na (joint locks) are introduced, but controlling the opponent upon physical contact is always stressed. Learn how your body naturally wants and needs to move to promote health, increase balance, build muscle, and improve flexibility. Practice becoming self-aware of your posture to prevent overuse and/or structural misalignment injuries. The most effective way to prevent injuries is to listen to the messages our body sends us. Through practice, we can learn to accept these signals, without judgment, explore them and truly pay attention to them in the moment. Through this self-awareness, natural posture, alignment, and movement is possible. Strengthen your mind/body connection through body awareness meditation that is still, moving, and moving with a partner. Enhance quick reaction skills by syncing your mind/body connection to speed up neural transmission. For example, from this training you may find yourself more able to catch something that is dropped before it hits the ground. Learn to observe your thoughts without expressing an automatic response pattern. Integrate gentle movement, breathing techniques and focused intention to cleanse, strengthen and cultivate life energy. Chi gong contributes to physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual balance. Often referred to as meditation in motion, tai chi calms the mind, improves biomechanics, and cultivates energy within the body, restoring the body to its original “program.” Given proper instruction, forms also provide better understanding of martial application. Focus is on you—reaching your full potential for martial ability and mental clarity. We promote a relaxing and non-threatening environment.
