Internet acess network infrastructures, such as cable, DSL, andcellular broadband networks, are being widely deployed. Yet, verylittle is known publicly about the characteristics of access networkdeployments in the real world. Consequently, researchers andapplication developers do not understand how well their systems orprotocols perform over access networks. Even customers of access ISPsare often not aware of the details of their network deployments.Glasnost:Bringing Transparency to the Internet ISPs are increasinglydeploying a variety of middleboxes (e.g., firewalls, traffic shapers,censors, and redirectors) to monitor and to manipulate the performanceof user applications. Most ISPs do not reveal the details of theirnetwork deployments to their customers. The goal of our Glasnostproject is to make access networks more transparent to theircustomers.SatelliteLab:Adding Heterogeneity to Planetary-Scale Testbeds SatelliteLabextends the popular PlanetLab testbed with nodes from the Internetedge networks, such as cable, DSL, wireless, and cellularnetworks. SatelliteLab testbed is useful for researchers wanting toevaluate their distributed system prototypes in heterogeneousnetwork environments.http://broadband.mpi-sws.org/satellitelab/CharacterizingResidential Broadband Networks A large andrapidly growing fraction of users connect to the Internet viaresidential cable and DSL networks. However, little is known about thecharacteristics (e.g., bandwidths and queue sizes) of deployedresidential broadband networks. In this project, we studied thecharacteristics of 2,000 DSL and cable links from 11 major ISPs inNorth America and Europe.http://broadband.mpi-sws.org/residential/Monarch: Emulating TCPflows over the Internet at Large Monarchis a tool that accurately emulates transport protocol flows from anend host under the experimenter's control to any other end host thatresponds to simple TCP, UDP or ICMP packet probes. Since many Internethosts and routers respond to such probes, Monarch can evaluatetransport protocols such as TCP Vegas, TCP Nice, and PCP over a largeand diverse set of Internet paths.http://broadband.mpi-sws.org/monarch/
