Welcome to Or-E-Con 2!  November 4-6, 2022

For over 40 years, OryCon has worked to bring you some of your favorite writers, artists, and creators in the science fiction and fantasy fandoms.  In light of the stress of the pandemic and the overall stress that our OryCon staff has been under, OSFCI has decided to place “live” OryCon on hold and to conduct our SECOND VIRTUAL Or-E-Con this fall (2022). This has a few advantages beside the obvious Covid-related ones: No ‘Con Crud’SF/F fans and authors and filkers who have limited Con travel time/budgets and who might not have been able to afford adding OryCon to their annual rounds can show up at Or-E-Con2 from their living rooms! This enriches us all with new participants, talents and points of view from all over the Earth. No ‘Boq Baktag’! Also, no ‘Con Exhaustion’…No endless drives, or flights that imperil your health/sanity/musical instrumentsThe Dead Dog can last longer, because when we are all done, you are already in your home!No ‘Crasse de le Congrès’Please take note that we are not canceling in-person OryCon forever. Also please note that the OSFCI corporation is owed $2 per member attending Or-E-Con 2, which they are not waiving even though we are virtual, which means we DO need to ask attendees for filthy lucre. However, we are not asking for much, and it is a donation. Many thanks!
We know many of you look forward to this event every year, and not having a full in-person event during the lengthy pandemic has been hard on all of us. When it’s time – we will all come back to OryCon with fresh energy and the insight that this period of reflection has brought.  If you would like more information, please feel free to reach out to OSFCI at president@osfci.org.———————————————-

Welcome to OryCon 42! – SPECIAL UPDATE!
COVID / VACCINATION POLICY Revision 3.0 10/30/2021:

OryCon 42 will follow all requirements from the CDC, the Oregon Health Authority, and the
Multnomah County Health Department. However, we intend to go above and beyond those
minimums to better keep our membership safe and healthy during this pandemic. This is a living
document, and we may adjust it as best practices and government requirements evolve.
All requirements apply regardless of age, so parents of young children should think carefully
about whether their children are ready for the responsibility of consistent mask wearing and
whether they are comfortable providing COVID test results for their children.
Masks/Face Coverings
In conformity with Oregon state requirements, all OryCon 42 members will be required to wear
face coverings over their nose and mouth in convention-controlled spaces, including
Programming rooms, Art Show, and Dealers. These face coverings should not include features
such as vents and should fit snugly around the mouth and nose to reduce the exaltation of
aerosols.
Because they do not fit snugly around the nose and mouth, things such as gaiters, bandannas,
and face shields are not sufficient. If your costume includes a mask or face covering that does
not meet our requirements, you will need to wear a face covering that meets our requirements
under it.
While we prefer that you bring an appropriate mask from home, free disposable masks that
comply with our policies will be available at Info Desk and Registration.
We acknowledge this goes beyond the state requirements. We have selected these enhanced
requirements to help keep our membership safe.
There will be no indoor convention areas accessible to general membership where mask
requirements are lifted or relaxed. There will be an outside tent for Hospitality / food consumption purposes.
Vaccines and COVID tests
All OryCon 42 members are strongly encouraged to become vaccinated against COVID-19. We
will be requiring either proof of full vaccination, with final dose on or before October 29, 2021, or
proof of negative COVID-19 test result, taken on Tuesday, November 9th, 2021 or later, for each
member in order for them to pick up the badge and attend the convention.
For proof of vaccination, we will be accepting CDC vaccination cards, Canadian COVID-19
Proof of Vaccination forms, or copies of individual medical records from a health care provider or
state agency. This documentation must include date of final shot in vaccination series, your full
name (which must match your ID), and any other information necessary to show that you are
fully vaccinated.
Proof of prior infection is not considered proof of vaccination and is not sufficient for entry.
If you are unable to provide proof of suitable vaccination, the other option is to provide a
negative COVID-19 test result. We will accept either a negative COVID-19 PCR test or negative
lab-based rapid test taken Tuesday, November 9th or later. (Home test kits are not acceptable,
testing must be done through a lab.) Those using the testing option are strongly encouraged to
re-test themselves throughout the con to monitor their status. These test results should be on a
report from a lab or other medical provider, and should include the full name of the person
whose test results they are, which must match your ID.
Parents are allowed to vouch for their minor children’s identity if those children do not have their own ID but those children must still have suitable lab results or vaccination records with their names on them.
We will accept printed originals, printed copies, or digital copies, but all copies must be clear
and high resolution enough for us to clearly see the needed information.
Exemptions and Accommodations
Unfortunately, due to the health emergency, we are not able to offer exemptions to any part of
this policy for in-person attendance at OryCon. The accommodation we are offering is a refund
for those unable to attend due to these policies.

OryCon is Oregon’s premier, fan run, annual science fiction/fantasy convention held in Portland since 1979. After taking our convention online for a free mini-con in 2020, we’re still hopeful that we can host our con in person for Orycon 42 November 12th – 14th, 2021! As we are still hopeful that the current pandemic climates will keep improving throughout the Summer, we are opening our room block at the hotel, The Red Lion Hotel on The River (located at Jantzen Beach). If you are planning to attend in person, now is the time to lock in your reservation, as rooms may be limited. Click on the link to book your room today:

https://book.passkey.com/go/OryCon2021

Each OryCon, we invite Guests of Honor from the science fiction and fantasy realms to be a part of our experience. For this year, we are proud to host our Author Guest of Honor, A. Lee Martinez, an award winning traditional fantasy novelist and author of The Constance Verity Trilogy. Visit our webpage for our Guests of Honor here:

https://42.orycon.org/guests-of-honor/

With this being a fan run and volunteer based convention, we need community support to bring the wonders of our convention to life! Want to help orchestrate the magical aspects of Orycon with your wits, experiences, and skills you’ve honed over the years? Would you like to help make the changes you’ve hoped to see in Orycon? Want to just help make sure things run smoothly for this event? We need the energy and fire from our volunteers to help make this convention a reality! We are currently looking for key personnel positions within the OryCon staff:

Secretary/Internal Communications (which may be split)
Vice Chair
Personnel (pre-convention)

If you are interested in any of these roles or would like to find out more, please visit this page for further details and to sign up. Department Head Level Staff are expected to be present at ConCom meetings, which are hosted online via Zoom. The ConCom meeting links are found HERE. Our meeting dates are as follows, Pacific Time:

Saturday, October 30th, 1PM

We will be giving special attention to the current progress in Oregon when it comes to any changes for the pandemic and occupancy restrictions. Please be sure to follow our social media on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and here on our website at 42.orycon.org.

While OR e-Con was a free event as a mini-con, we are requesting donations both to cover the costs of the virtual event and for use elsewhere in the organization. As always, the various OSFCI charitable funds (Clayton, Petrey) are also open to donations. We apologize that we were unable to provide a link prior to where donations can be made prior to the event, but we are happy to unveil the link and to invite our followers, fellow fans, and those who miss a bit of the magic of Orycon to donate:

If you’ve already purchased a membership in 2020 that you want rolled over to this year, for more details, see here.
